This is my first time to do a deep study of the book of Proverbs, as well as my first time reading any by Andrew Wommack. For the most part, this was an interesting and heart-checking study.
However, as I often find, there were many points that I can’t say that I agree with. I am of the belief that anyone would be hard pressed to find a Bible teacher or a Bible commentary that they 100% agree with. This is how I felt about this book.
While I entirely agree with Wommack that the book of Proverbs is under-studied and under-utilized by today’s society, I didn’t always agree with his interpretations of the scriptures.
There are different types of studies of the books of the Bible, and obviously different denominations. Wommack is non-denominational, as am I, but he is a bit more “old school” that I am. I knew this going in, so I expected some of his viewpoints to differ from mine in specific areas.
Let me say, I agree with 90% of what he said. He gave much insight on the historical times of Proverbs as well as how it still applies to us and our time today, as I believe all of the Bible does when studied fully.
I very much enjoyed the first 3/4 of the study. But as Proverbs does get somewhat repetitive, so did Wommacks commentary as well as examples. He used the same personal stories, the same personal examples, and at times seemed like he was beating a dead horse on some of the points he was trying to make, instead of finding fresh ways to make the same point.
With that said, many of the points that he believes, I just found a bit hard to swallow. I was looking forward to his insight on Proverbs 31.....but then I remembered how difficult it can be to read from a man telling a woman how to be. Some men have much empathy and insight as they have studied it out. In fact, I recently read an amazing study, The Diamond in Your Household of Faith by Dr. David Weeter, that did an amazing job at discussing Proverbs 31 woman as she is in today’s society. Wommack’s view and study, however ensued a few eye rolls and even more discussions with my husband. Some of Wommack’s word choice in how he discusses women and their place in the home is horrible. I think maybe it comes across better in his teaching when his heart is shown fully, but on paper, in black and white words, it just sounds horrible. Which sadly being the last chapter of this study, left a bad taste in my mouth.
All in all this was a good study. But maybe it is for a specific niche of more old school nondenominational readers.
