At first, I found Sholly’s visual interpretations of Lovecraft’s works to be a bit too cartoony, but the more that I read the blurbs attached to the imagery, and accepted the almost EC Comics style of artistry, I started to really dig it. Especially as a major fan of all things Lovecraft (while not forgiving him for his racist ideology that seeps in to several of his stories), I thoroughly recommend this book.
An anthology of art inspired by the stories of HP Lovecraft. von Sholly loves this body of work, and that love shows. He also really, really likes to draw monsters. If you are a HPL aficionado, you really want to get this.
i really like this! the whole things looks and feels like a retro magazine, and it's pretty rad. most of Lovecraft's stories, including some of his ghost written stories, have illustrations here, some more than others, with a little blurb attached to each one as well. my only complaint is that I wish there were more of the preliminary sketches included here, as I [personally] prefer that sketchy art style over his fully rendered works. I also really appreciate how it says they acknowledge that Lovecraft's work isn't meant to be depicted graphically, but concede that as an artist, it's just too hard to resist. highly recommend at least giving this a few glances if you're interested in Lovecraft or Pete Von Sholly's works.
