A unicorn walks into a bar…and leaves with my heart.
He’s gone, and now I have a unicorn-named-March-shaped hole in my life. But, I get it. Unicorns aren't meant to live in a world where they have to deal with putting gas in the car, getting groceries, and paying cell phone bills.
I'm trying to get past this. Really, I am. It's just that everyone constantly talks about him, from his immortal ex-girlfriend, to reality TV-obsessed Fae, to even my own fully-human friends. Even his enemies are still obsessed with him. I learned that the hard way. Did I mention the part where I end up on the run—again—from an old, powerful enemy of his? Yeah. Fun times.
I just want to be left to get over my broken heart while watching home improvement shows and eating ice cream. But mysterious disappearances, murder, and a quest for affordable real estate in Washington D.C. keep getting in the way.
Maybe that's just life. Sometimes we get what we want. Sometimes, we get what we need. And sometimes, we get what we deserve. I guess you could call it…The March Effect.
Kim Alexander grew up in the wilds of Long Island, NY and slowly drifted south until she reached Key West. After spending ten undocumented years in the Keys, she moved to Washington DC, where she lives with two cats, an angry fish, and her extremely patient husband. She began writing when she ran out of authors to interview (and they pulled the plug on her channel, Sirius XM Book Radio.) Kim was in her twenties when she finally read a book not prominently featuring spaceships and/or wizards. Turns out Jane Austen was pretty funny! THE SAND PRINCE is Kim’s first novel and begins a fantasy series called THE DEMON DOOR. Her husband tells her she needs to write at least ten more books if she intends to retire in Thailand, so thank you for your patronage.
I really missed Ruby's voice. She is sooooooo funny and clever and entertaining. I want to have a drink with Ruby. (She makes me snort-laugh.) Then, there's adorably naive unicorn-man March who's just sexy as hell and so freaking wonderful.
Of course, since this is something of a magical monster story, there is plenty of intrigue and action. I loved the conflict here, not only regarding March's battle with time but also with the villains ... who are a bit more gray area than you might expect.
Such a wonderful continuation of this series, and well, I gotta say: I need book three like IMMEDIATELY.
Ruby is trying to heal her broken heart after March left . She couldn't blame him , unicorns don't really belong in this world . She knew he had to go but she just wishes her friends would just stop talking about him. She just can't get away from everyone's chatter and then the poor girl ends up on the run yet again . All she wants is to be left alone to eat ice cream and heal her heart . But alas she has to find out about the disappearances and murders and try and figure out her feelings . Will she find what she needs and will she survive to get her life back. Ruby and the gang are back and getting better with each book . Poor Ruby really needs a break this poor girl has been through it all. She is still sassy and trying to get on with her life . There are characters that you want to slap and hug . Marly is sweet but you really want to help her become whole again. You will want hug and slap a few of the many characters up side the head . They are well written and getting more and more complex In book two we find out what the effects were after March left this world . The author has put the main character through the ringer and is ripping out her heart as she goes . There are moments where you are on the edge of your seat and other moments you are wanting to wrap up the characters in a warm blanket . The author has a way of telling a story that will have you turning pages . The only thing I wish is the author would give the main character a bit of a break . The poor girl has been through so much ,she needs a vacation . There was a few times i felt the story was just dragging a little and I did kind of felt a little underwhelmed . Over all I enjoyed this book and really want to know if Ruby will ever get her happily ever after . This is a book that you can add to your summer reading list .
This one was such a ride filled with freaking amazing twists and so many new magical creatures. I couldn't turn the pages on this one fast enough.
Ruby is dealing with the missing march. As it's been months and she has to accept that he's gone to his live his real life.
But now there's a new girl, sweet but a little over excited one, Lauren sent by the Seelie Court who's here to investigate what with the Vampires and unicorns being making more of an appearance.
Lauren is a genuinely nice girl and together with Ruby and shanti help her to get settled.
But oh my... Out of left field.. Things take a drastic turn for the worse when something awful happens and then someone from the Unseelie court appears sent by the king himself to find out about it.
Amidst all this it seems March appears out of nowhere but he's having some problems with being present in reality as his mind keeps playing tricks and Ruby has no idea what to make of it.
If you love urban fantasy, this one was a gold field with the many things that are happening and then being presented with a twist at every next turn. Then...when all the mystery is solved... OMG... I WAS LIKE ALL WIDE EYED AND DEVOURING EVERY WORD AS FAST AS I COULD.
A freaking amazing wild ride for sure. But that ending.. Oh my.. I can't wait to dive into the next one. Loved this one. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Pretty seamless transition from Pure. Ruby is disconsolate thinking she may never see March again. What’s even worse is that her best friend, Marly, has cut off all contact. A fae named Lauren shows up at the bar where Ruby works and is overly enthusiastic about finding out everything there is to know not only about Ruby but humans in general. If I remember correctly the impetus is because of Ruby’s remarkable interaction with a unicorn.
March reappears with problems of his own consisting of losing the ability to discern whether the time he’s in is past, present or future. This is especially upsetting as he used to have practically no concept of time passing when he was in his unicorn persona. He’s also starting to evoke emotions, another previously unknown aspect of his personality.
A dark fae warrior later arrives to investigate a death and to take Ruby prisoner as he accuses her of being the perpetrator. She convinces him that she’s not the culprit and the two of them along with March start to search for the real criminal.
Lots of twists and turns and the reappearance of characters from the first book. The ending is kind of a downer but will hopefully be set right in future books.
The characters in this quirky urban fantasy series seem to have grown on me especially the unicorn who has become involved with Ruby, a human woman, maybe I too have fallen for the March Effect. In this book 2 Ruby starts off really missing her beloved but refuses to admit this even to herself until he suddenly turns up once again in her life. He is doing his best to grapple with the mysteries of human life, he has difficulty understanding time, the difference between past, future and the now, as well as all the gadgets like phones which humans use. He is also trying to understand emotions like fear and anger and in the end maybe also love. Meantime a friend of Ruby's has turned against her big time and another is killed and the magical creatures seem to be gathering around her. She cannot give up on her friend until they discover who is behind all the troubles they are encountering. This 2nd book is exciting, full of mystery and lots of magical creatures including the King of the unseelie court! Prepare yourselves for surprises.
will say you should read book 1 first. I did not. I was very confused at first so book 1 would have helped that. In saying that I thought book two was a little chaotic at first but once I understood the characters and situations it got better. The flow is very good and the excitement of the story kept building. Ruby is a fierce human. She takes everything on without thought for herself. March is hard to read. He is so very unemotional at times that I wonder why Ruby loves him. But as you read that is the unicorn in him- so it works for his character. The other characters all played important rolls in the story and there not so many you got overwhelmed with keep track of who was who. The fantasy part was so blended with humans it was refreshing to not see the fantasy world hidden. The last few chapters really wrap this part of the series . This book does have an ending but in saying that there is still more to come with this story.
I was on the edge of my seat, the edge of my seat throughout the whole book. I wanted to kill a fox. I wanted to slap an investigator. I wanted to cure Marly and make her whole again. I wanted to find a way to stop time and make March in the here and now. But most of all, my heart went out to Ruby. She seems to always get the short end of the stick. Her heart is in the right place, but she is human and that makes all the difference. I loved this book as much as I loved Pure. These characters seem to fit together like a family puzzle. And with any family, there are fights, surprises, mystery and love. Lots and lots of hot love! I can’t wait to see what happens next with Ruby and March, cause a King left his mark on them in a way that might not recognize each other.
Take off again on the second part of the adventure. What happens is a non stop thrill ride! If you thought book one was a great start to this epic fantasy read you haven't seen anything yet! This book will shake you up and flip you around. You won't even know what happened until Ms. Alexander is ready for you to. Evenn when she lets you know what is going on you will be scratching your head and wondering whyyyyyy? That is what I want to know! WHY? Ladies and gentleman my new favorite author Ms. Kim Alexander. I hope she never changes and continues to write stories that make you think. I truly enjoyed this book and I know you will enjoy it as well!
This book takes up where book 1 left off. It is full of love, sorrow, anger, mysterious creatures and more feelings than you know what to do with. This rollercoaster ride will keep you on the edge of your seat while you wonder what will happen next. The world building in this book is stunning. The author has created a place where unicorns, fae, vampires and humans live together. The book is hard to put down and you will wonder how can Ruby deal with everything and stay sane. Cannot wait to read the next book. Be prepared to not put this book down no matter what you have going on. This writer will entice you.
omg! Wow... I am literally at a loss for words! This story took me on a crazy ride! I did not expect that outcome! I think I’m still in shock!! I can’t wait to read the next book. Kim did an amazing job with these two books! I’m just blown away!! I absolutely love these characters, Ruby and March have so much going on in this story! I’m think this book is going to leave me with a book hangover, not sure how I’m going to move on!
March wasn't ready for the human world, but his leaving left Ruby heartbroken. Trying to get over him isn't easy when all everybody can do is talk about him.. But it's time to start running when others are after her. This is never a boring book with all the ups and downs , but will March come back or is he gone forever. I'm hoping for a third book as I'm thinking this isn't it for our characters
I was very worried for Ruby because she was very sad after March left and I thought this one would be another sweet short read but no, it is short but oh my God!!!! Poor ruby, she began broken hearted and has had so many twists and turns happen in this book that I really feel for her. The new characters add unexpected situations that kept me glued to the book. An awesome roller coaster ride that I loved and makes me need book 3 right now
Magical and mysterious! Picking up where the last story left off this installment was full of plenty of exciting twists and turns leaving me wondering what would happen next.
A unicorn named March walked away with Ruby's heart. Now she has to try and get over it, but everyone keeps bringing him up. Another of March's old enemies pops up and people are murdered. What else could go wrong? A lot if last year is anything to go by.
Ways to describe this without giving to much away: 1. Funny and tragic. 2. Excellent hook and set at end. 3. Worth spending my precious quiet time. 4. On my way to download next.😁
An enjoyable second outing for the Unicorn story, I did feel March didn't feature as highly in this story, but otherwise fun and some interesting developments.
Ruby, March and their circle have quite the adventures. Lots of twists and turns to wade through makes for an intriguing and suspenseful story. I'm looking forward to the next book in series.
This is now one of my favorite series. Great story though heartbreaking at the end. I absolutely love March and Ruby. Can't wait to see where their story leads!
