After her girlfriend's murder, Abbie is hesitant to start dating again. Then she meets Kat, and nothing is ever the same again.
Abbie is suddenly thrown into Kat's world , which is filled with magic, supernatural wars, mages, and more.
Kat belongs to a band of thieves who are still in the process of completing their training. Using a special mark, they are able to recruit Abbie and her supreme hacking abilities for assistance in one of their heists.
It should have been simple, but complications arise when the band is unable to remove Abbie's mark. Soon, they realize that Abbie might be way more involved in this underground world than they thought.
"Presence: The Marked" is the first book of cyberpunk/fantasy series that takes the classic roles of fantasy heroes and places them in a futuristic setting while depicting Abbie's transformation into an international criminal.
[2022] ; From 4 stars to 5 stars. This was an even better read than the first time back in 2019. I'm looking forward to seeing Band 13 working with Xavier, Lilia and Haylen. Would also love to see what little Faith is up to as well.
Time to read the next book!
[2019] ; This was an exciting read! It was an exciting mix of myths and future technology. I loved Abigail, Kat, Diamond and Jack. They're the team I never knew I needed in my life. I'm hoping there's a second book to follow this one.
DNF @ 15%. I found fault with the prose to too great an extent it detracted me from my reading. Sorry.
Edit: more specifically, it was in my eyes the overuse of “as” during descriptions. Oh and clichés, and, I suspect, a Mary Sue protagonist. Also wasn’t fond of the fight scene with “claw” being used at every line.
“As if” too, was dubious. “ ‘What?’ Kat asked as with an unwavering smile.’ “
“Yup, short for violent Violet, trust me she was not a woman you wanted to piss off. She was dangerous as hell with a belt,” Kat said with a shudder as if traumatized.
Showing us that she shudders at the memory renders that last bit redundant!!!
Little details like that accumulate over time and well, the story didn’t hook me enough to continue.
The characters, world, and plot are all truly fantastic. I would love to see this as an anime, since it feels very anime inspired. That said, the author's inexperience shows through in the writng style itself, which can occasionally become a distraction to the story with some clunky exposition at times or just some odd structure choices.
This book is brilliant-once you get past the writing. The authors imagination is unquestionable, but I almost DNF'ed at page 43.However,sticking with it paid off as this is truly a good book with great characters, interesting concepts some great action too.I will definitely read the next installment,if available. What I loved the most were the relationships, both romantic and otherwise,as they were well written.
I didn't have any expectations going into this book. I am proud to say it's a great novel, with very interesting characters. The story jumps along with very little lag, and I can't wait for a sequel.
Loved this well spun twist on Arthorian influenced adventure. Thieves vs images and a conspiracy too. Bravo. Totally immersed right up until I ran out of story.
