A president and executive creative director of Coach presents a series of stark black-and-white images of world-class UFC athletes at moments of solitary authenticity, in a collection that reveals each fighter's gentle and disarmed side when depicted without competitors. 20,000 first printing.
I won this book from goodreads, which was exciting. I was interested in it because my husband and I have written a screenplay about the UFC. I am not really a fan of the UFC, but my husband is. It was interesting to get a deeper perspective on the fighters. There isn't much text; really the text just consists of a foreword, which was quite interesting. The foreword offers the history of the UFC and how it emerged and why it has become so popular. It gave me a much clearer perspective on why people admire it and the fighters so much. Mixed martial arts had never been done before, and the UFC has given fighters an opportunity to learn and utilize different techniques, unlike traditional boxing. The book has short quotes from or about each fighter that is featured in the book, and some of them are really interesting. The photos are good and the book design is really clever, but it is just a pictoral examination of the fighters, and some of the photos are used more than once, which is breaking the cardinal rule of good book design. I'm not sure that the male fans of the UFC would enjoy it much, but the female fans would!
I WON this book in a goodreads giveaway! Imagine my surprise to learn that I won a book from goodreads giveaways! I never win anything & I won a FREE BOOK! Awesome! “What book did I win?!” I wondered. “The one about roses? The sci-fi novel?” Nope…it was FIGHTER: The Fighters of UFC. It is a coffee table quality book of the amazing black & white photography of Reed Krakoff. It is a book as much about photography as it is about Ultimate Fighting Championship. Regardless of your opinion of UFC itself, this is a striking collection of photography; depicting some of the toughest men in the world in the simplest of terms. The b&w photography is beautiful, and the subject matter can be pretty easy on the eyes. I decided to give the book to my father, himself a photographer & a UFC fan. I know he will enjoy it.
I enjoyed this book because of the amazing photography. There were more than twenty fighters included in this book. Each fighter has a 2-3 page spread of pitures. I was surprised by the fact that there was not much writing. I expected bios of each fighter. The only words in the book are quotes from each fighter. There are many great quotes that can be used as motivation. I am a basketball coach, and will use some of these quotes. Overall, this will be a great book I can thumb through every once in a while. If you are a female fan of UFC, you will really enjoy this book.
Yes, this is a picture book. But much like some Japanese philosophy works I've read there is much truth hidden in some of the short quotes that caption each picture. The forward by Sam Sheridan is worth the price of the book.
