Little by little, despite her worries, Beelzebub is getting closer to realizing her "special feelings" for Mullin. Is she finally going to graduate from the kindergarten of love?! (That would make her a student of the elementary school of love). Her conversations with Mullin are so pure and blissfully ignorant, they can't help but bring smiles.
There are multiple stories in this volume, even though there are eight main chapters. We start off with a story on Lilim, an examinee trying to take the exam for the Succubus Division. Unfortunately for her though, she picked her target as the airheaded Mullin who doesn’t understand her advances or motives. It’s followed by a sort of introduction story of a new character named Mammon, who is the current Head of the Department of Trade. Looking almost like a child in oversized clothing Mammon is obsessed with money in the weirdest ways. Moving on in the volume, we visit Sacchan and her former classmate Leraje, the patissier. Leraje visits Sacchan as she has suddenly broken up with her boyfriend due to overworking and after her visit, Sacchan is debating her feelings for Astaroth. After we visit a fun chapter where Belphegor dreams of herself, Azazel and her friends in prehistoric times there’s a short cute chapter on Mullin and Beel enjoying the snowy, wintery season. Then we’re taken to our next chapter where Beel, Belphegor and Mullin visit France in the human world followed by our last chapter where Beel’s desire to hold hands with Mullin succeeds in the most unexpected manner.
Whew! There was so much going on in this volume yet somehow it felt like there wasn’t much development in the relationships themselves. There are some tiny steps of improvement such as, Belphegor’s exchange diary with Azazel is making progress and Beel was able to touch Mullin’s hand. It’s not progress in terms of they are getting close enough to confess to each other, but the feelings between them are growing.
I enjoyed the new characters however I felt we may possibly have too many characters now. Since we have quite an array of characters the series tries to incorporate their stories as well. The new character’s story is broken into pieces amongst multiple volumes so the relay is slow but it also leaves the relationships and growth of our main character’s slow too. There is no real sense of how much time has passed but I feel like not much time has passed at all between volumes given the overlapping stories, though I can’t be confident.
I liked how each character made an appearance in this volume. There are a lot of characters, but each one either received their own chapter or was a part of a chapter, and it was just good to see the author appreciate them all and remember to use them. Usually I find that most manga will forget or not use a character again, once they’ve fulfilled their use.
The stories in this volume were not unique. Most are continuations from the previous volumes and others are typical across the shoujo manga space. Regardless, the presentation of the stories through its artwork is as always cute and fluffy. The level of detail that goes into some of their clothes and the background really amazes me because I always find too much detail ruins the cuteness and softness of the art, but this manga proves me wrong.
Overall, this was a good volume with a lot of variety in the characters and stories. It’s a calm, fluffy and cute shoujo manga with a really slow burn romance. I’m looking forward to hopefully seeing more development in the relationships in the next volumes!
