The Little Mermaid is a cute story about Coralie – a mermaid who falls in love with the human Prince Peter. She gives her voice to Seaweedy Nora in order to become a human and see Prince Peter. However, Nora becomes jealous and tries to steal Prince Peter from Coralie but birds chase Nora away and Coralie lives happily ever after with Prince Peter. I enjoyed this book because it was a very light-hearted retelling of the Disney classic. There isn’t much diversity in this book as all the characters are white. This could be improved by adding more mermaids of varying skin colours. I would still recommend this book for early readers who like fairytales, Disney, or mermaids because it provides a great lesson in jealousy and love.
