Was an American cartoonist and animator, best known for the comic strip Little Nemo (begun 1905) and the animated cartoon Gertie the Dinosaur (1914). For legal reasons, he worked under the pen name Silas on the comic strip Dream of the Rarebit Fiend.
A prolific artist, McCay's pioneering early animated films far outshone the work of his contemporaries, and set a standard followed by Walt Disney and others in later decades. His comic strip work has influenced generations of artists, including creators such as William Joyce, André LeBlanc, Moebius, Maurice Sendak, Chris Ware and Bill Watterson.

Little Nemo in Slimberland was a Sunday fantasy comic from the early 20th century. This book featured full-sized reprints. This particular volume gives highlights from the 20 year run.

The images are stricking. It's fun to see early versions of fantasy surrealism and science fiction.

This is a half a century before marvel comics, twenty years before Superman. The dialogue is often stilted and very old-timey. But the short stories and wild adventures still kept the attention of my eight year old.

In the late 80's, there was an excellent anime adaptation of Little Nemo. That version included a strong nightmarish quality. The original comics did not. Both versions did capture that otherworldly odd feeling you get in dreams and boyish exploration.

Beautifully printed.
