The pronoun is
a tiny instrument we use
to unpick our lives; so ‘I’
and ‘you’ begin to show
beneath the old shared knots
of ‘us’, so ‘ours’ is spoilt for ‘mine’.
We do not know the dreadful pleasure
of our industry until
the rag’s too weak to take
the weight of joy or compromise,
the pull and tear of love.
