I love the friends to lovers trope, and I liked this aspect of the story. However, it took both MCS way too long to figure out who the creeper was in this story. It was beyond ridiculous and obvious, and made them look like idiots. I knew after one creepy encounter. Also, if someone is creeping you out, there's no need to be polite. Just tell them to fuck off and leave you alone. Grow a pair for fuck's sake!

First off, although this book is the third in the series, it truly reads as a standalone. I haven’t read books one and two, and this did not impact the story. This book truly belong to Jamie and Ed, which is great.

Jamie has a nice background that shapes the kind of person he is today–a little bit lost, very unsure of himself, and moving from one bad relationship to the next. He’s got a knack for picking men as messed up as he is. Career-wise, he’s doing great. He has his own print shop and business is good.

This sets up Jamie for a great character arc I was looking forward to reading, but alas, Jamie doesn’t quite reach his true potential. He does become stronger throughout the novel, and he does come out of his shell by reaching out for help. But I really hoped to see him truly stand his ground. Or perhaps I’m wrong. Maybe because of the story arc, the author couldn’t give Jamie the shining moment he deserves.

As for Ed, he’s been burned badly by a former friends-to-lovers relationship, and he’s sworn off touching another “friend.” But there is sexual tension that grows between Ed and Jamie. It’s a wonderful slow burn that is believable. I thought the author excelled here at bringing to life their relationship. Bravo!

Jamie has had the most unfortunate run of luck with men, and after his breakup with his nasty ex-boyfriend, he is being stalked and gaslighted. He’s got his best friend Ed to lean on – Ed has always been there for him and always will be – the sparks are there between them, and they both wonder if they could be more for each other long term, or if they shouldn’t risk ruining a great friendship. I was on the edge of my seat, as the tension and danger factor slowly ramped up as the story progressed. I really liked Jamie’s relationship with Ed and their chemistry, and the brief appearances of other characters from the Deviant Hearts series in this story. Highly recommended!

I felt like the story line dragged on a little but it is a great friends to lovers story. 3.5/4 stars

Mind games are so much more effective in the long run because they pick away at a person. They make even the most down-to-earth and stable types start to question and doubt themselves. Violence is too crude, though it has its place of course. But attack a person’s self-belief, and you attack and destroy the very core of them…

I must admit that I jumped into this book FIRST because the guy at the cover caught my attention. The SECOND is because the blurb had successfully intrigued me. And I’m really afraid that I will not catch the story because this is actually book three in the series. But the warning said that even this is part of the series, it still can be read as stand alone. So I decided to give this book a try….

The story successfully caught my attention right from the very beginning. The tensions and suspense the author trying to build right from the start made this book hard to put down. The main reason why I like the story is the friends-to-lovers trope this book offered me and when it combined with a psychological thriller, it made the reading become more and more interesting.

The mysteries are a bit predictable for me, I even know ‘the who' behind all the terrors right away, but I must admit the whole story still interesting enough to follow and I do enjoying every part of it.

And now I’m curious about the two previous books in this series since the guys from the previous books make some appearance in this book.

If you looking for friends-to-lovers story with a bit of psychological suspense touch, this book is one good choice.

What a twisted thrill! A great psychological thriller with very slow-burn friends to lovers trope.

I liked this story and it kept me guessing as to how it would end! I loved the psychological aspects as they were so subtle and I could see the characters second-guessing themselves. Very well done.

It is a longer book and it felt both slow and fast in different parts. Best friends Jaime and Ed seemed to be a couple already, that did everything but sleep together. As they progress to lovers very slowly in some ways as they were basically already in love, some elements seemed faster. I could feel for Jaime as he second guesses himself and his sanity. I felt for him every time he had to deal with his dirtbag ex. Ed is ever the protector and wants to protect and care for Jaime but I liked how Jaime stood up for himself even when it was a little foolish. I loved the secondary characters and I’m guessing they have their own story I now need to read!

I’ll say it again but the psychological elements were so twisted and well done I was on edge for much of the book. It’s a twisted ride and I’m still reeling from the thrill!!

Getting out of an abusive relationship can often become more difficult than anticipated. Jamie has help and support in his best friend, Ed, and with his care and concern Jamie begins to live his life again. Watching them navigate the tricky waters of second chances and friends becoming more, Jamie and Ed show just how much they rely on one another, just how deeply their hearts have always been connected. I enjoyed them when they finally got on the same page. What was harder to watch was Jamie's stubborn refusal to set appropriate boundaries at the same time as accepting the help that was offered. While they eventually got it together and worked things out, I struggled with how long it took to get there.

Jamie and Ed were made for one another and their friendship was truly incredible. I loved watching Ed's support despite swallowing his feelings for Jamie. It's obvious that his first real foray into love and commitment crashed and burned, so his fear of trusting his heart to someone else was believable, and yet he couldn't help his deep affection for Jamie. Timing was just not on their side over and over again, but when Ed finally offered everything to Jamie it was so sweet and simple that I cheered when they finally took the plunge.

Jamie was hard for me to connect with right from the start, unfortunately. At virtually every turn he shut out those that could help him, those that could truly love him the way he craved, and ran headlong into difficult situations. His desperate need to be independent cut him off at the knees and put him in harm's way over and over again and I found myself continually disappointed by his behavior. I did feel that he could be the best partner for Ed, but it took me nearly the entire book to warm up to him as an individual.

Ed's paranoia turned out to be legitimate and while appreciative of the Devil's advocate position Lee took with his concerns, it bothered me that that became the focus rather than making strides to find out who was covertly tormenting Jamie. On the other hand, Lee really did have a life of his own and can't drop everything each time Ed has a concern. In that way, I couldn't argue with how events proceeded. Overall, though, the way the plot was pushed forward was the most difficult thing to enjoy because it made Jamie seem weak, Ed seem paranoid, and Lee seem unhelpful. None of those things were actually true, but I don't think that was articulated as best it could have been.

The ending was sweet and full of healing in an alternative way that didn't include counseling. I felt it worked quite well since everyone's coping and healing paths are different. It was refreshing and fitting and so full of hope. Jamie and Ed found their happiness and a way to move forward together and heal from all the pain their tormentors caused.

I was gifted the audio file of this book.

My review for the audio bit of this book might well merge into the book bit, rather than be separate!

This is book 3 in the Deviant Hearts series, but can totally be a standalone to books one and two. So not necessary to read/listen to them but 5-star listens people! 5 stars!

And this one is too! This, I think, is my favourite of the three. Can't pinpoint why, but hey, who cares! I bloody loved it!

How Jamie was still standing towards the end, I don’t know. Things were messing with MY head, and I was just strolling down the street listening to it all, poor Jamie and Ed were in the thick of it.
I must admit my spidey senses went off when a certain someone turned up, I think it was his voice that rang alarm bells and Mr Dan Calley (again narrating) NAILS the creepiness of that person, he really does.

Actually, Mr Calley nails the whole damn book!

He gets over all of Jamie’s spiral downward, his descent into a dark place, cos he doesn’t know if he’s losing his mind or something else is going on. He gets over all of Ed’s despair at not being able to help Jamie as he wants to, as much as he NEEDS to. He gets over all of the shiver that the certain character brings, Lord I’m shivering typing this up!

Ed and Jamie’s friendship moves into more slowly, it’s a gradual thing but once they decide to do it, they are all in. Once they jump all in, it’s obvious they were meant to be together, and the love they have for each jumps out all the time, even BEFORE they move into a physical relationship. They just didn’t see it for what it really was.

I will also admit, when things went down at the end, it went down differently to what I was imagining would be a conclusion. I have no idea WHAT my conclusion was gonna be, really I don’t, but you know I’m all about the book feelings and that’s what I felt!

It’s quite hard to write a long review, ranting and raving about how amazing this book and narrator is, while watching every word I type, cos one single tiny word could send things into spoilers for some and I don’t do spoilers!

I bloody LOVED it! So much so, I might even return to some other books Mr Calley has narrated that I had to leave off for a bit.

So, I’ll just leave you with this:

5 star book with
5 star narration so
5 stars overall!

Thank you, Ms Ryecart for my copy, I have loved all three of these, shame there won’t be any more!

Wow, just wow. This book completely blew me away. This is one of those books that as I was reading it I was looking over my shoulder with chills running down my arms. It has been a long time since I read a book that actually scared me. But this is one of those books that did it. There is rather creepy factor to this read that is for sure. But there is also a romance that is mixed into his read so you have the sweet and scary all in one read. A.E. Ryecart outdid it with this read. I was well and truly blown away by this book and it is definitely on my highly recommended read list for others.

This book starts out with Jamie going through and extremely hard break up from his current boyfriend, Callum. When Callum acted as if he was not going to leave without putting up a fight, Jamie turned to his go to person and best friend Ed for back up. Ed was all too happy to help Jamie put Callum out on his butt.

Ed did not like Callum from the start. No one would ever be good enough for Jamie in Ed’s eyes but Callum definitely wasn’t. Callum is one of those people that use and abuse those that he is with and that is what he has done to Jamie for far too long. Now Ed is determined to help Jamie see that taking Callum back would be the biggest mistake he could make.

Both Ed and Jamie have a secret from the other. They both have been in love with the other for years now but neither has said anything for fear of ruining their friendship. But now that weird things are happening to Jamie that cannot be explained, Ed and Jamie are spending even more time together then they normally would.

With all this time they are spending together, will Ed and Jamie finally admit to the other how they feel? What is with all the strange things that are happening to Jamie? Is Callum behind it all or is it someone else that is not on their radar? What will happen if things go from bad to worse for Jamie? Will Ed be there to catch him if he falls?

This was truly an incredible read as I have already stated. I really and truly enjoyed his book and I hope that there will be another book in this series in the future. Again A.E. Ryecart did just an amazing job on this book and I definitely look forward to more books in the future. ESPECIALLY after this book. M

The third and last book in the Deviant Hearts series, Perilous Hearts dives into the realm of psychological suspense and mystery with a heart stopping, thrilling climax. Like the other two books in the series, this book can easily be read as a standalone, but familiar characters from book one and two make their appearances.

Jamie always falls for the wrong guy. First he falls for his best friend Ed during college, but Ed isn’t interested in relationships. Then he dates Tom, a level ten clinger, before he finally ends up with Callum, the charming turned abusive boyfriend. When that relationship ends, Jamie finds himself single for the first time in a while. It isn’t being single, especially with Callum being so vindictive, but Jamie has his best friend Ed to lean on for support. Everything is finally going right in Jamie’s life, until strange things start happening. Jamie doesn’t know if he’s going crazy from stress, or if someone is out to get him. The plot slowly builds, intensifying the feeling of living within a fractured reality, as well as ramping up the sexual tension between Jamie and Ed, until the thrilling conclusion that had me on the edge of my seat.

This was a fun, psychological thriller, with a strong slow burn romance. The relationship and connection Jamie and Ed with each other was intense, and watching them finally get their heads out of the sand and actually acknowledge the love and lust they had for each other had me cheering.

Dan Calley narrated the audiobook version of this novel and did a fantastic job. Dan’s voice is delicious and gorgeous, plus he has a gift for narrating different characters and making them sound distinct. I love the different types of British accents he did, and as an American listener, I had no trouble at all understanding the accents. He’s quickly becoming one of my favorite new narrators.

This has been a great series so far and this book keeps that record. As well as a great relationship story there is high drama and mind games involved that keep you guessing as to the possible outcome.
Our MC's, Ed and Jamie, have been friends forever but the chance of more has always been turned down by them with missed chances and protecting their own hearts. Things change however when Jamie's ex causes problems and things start happening that he can't explain. Ed is the typical alpha male wanting to save and protect his friend though, for little a while, with no idea what from. Whilst it sometimes appears that having Ed take control and save the day is all Jamie wants, he also has quite the backbone, determined and with an inner strength that appears when most needed and under the most pressure. I loved the interaction between them and how easy it was for them to read each other. Something that really shows how long they've been friends and paying attention to the other.
The plot line for this book is really interesting and dives quite deep into the psyche and what one person is able to inflict on another. There's an array of characters, both good and bad, to keep up entertained and interested in the relationship between Ed and Jamie. Nothing feels rushed, having the chance to flow to it's natural conclusion, and I like that we have an occasional visit from Lee, Dom, Billy and Dashiell. You don't need to have read the previous books to enjoy or understand their relevance but it makes for a nice link between the books in the series.
This book is definitely a bit darker than the previous two and I liked the contrast, something different from A.E. Ryecart. A definite recommendation from me.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

When your best friend is the one (an audio review)

Jamie has had a string of bad luck. From the guy who professed his love after a mere handful of dates (Jamie didn’t walk away, he ran), to his wanker ex who has turned vindictive and nasty. The revenge scene turned my stomach.

So what’s Jamie to do? He’s been walked over for so long that I wondered if he could find the strength to make it on his own. Step in Ed, Jamie’s best friend since Uni, and the one guy Jamie’s always been able to count on. Ed is a steady presence in Jamie’s life but, for the first time, there’s something more. Something tangible. Something almost romantic. With all the turmoil in Jamie’s life, the last thing he needs is the complication of a relationship. Yet, maybe now is the perfect time. New start and all that.

But when strange things keep happening around Jamie, he begins to question his sanity. And when things take a turn for the worse, they sure go downhill fast. The question became, would Jamie survive long enough to enjoy his new-found love with Ed?

Now, I’ve loved every book in this series and I enjoyed this one as well. My only issue was that it felt very slow at the beginning and since I knew action was coming, I was becoming a little impatient. But when the pace picked up, I was all-in for the ride. So, another great book.

I need to take a moment to mention Dan Calley. I really enjoy his narrations and this one will become a fave. He just gets it and gives me a strong performance every time. Hoping for more from Ms. Ryecart and Mr. Calley.

Perilous Hearts by A.E. Ryecart is book 3 in the Deviant Hearts series and can be read as a standalone. Take my word for it – this is true. I have not read the first two books in this series but I had no trouble following the story in Perilous Hearts.
This book is written in the first person but from alternating points of view. The chapter is headed with the narrator’s name.
Jamie and Ed are best friends and Ed is there to support him when he and Callum break up. The break-up is vicious and you immediately know that this is not the end of Callum.
Meanwhile, Tom reappears. Before Callum, Tom and Jamie had been going out but, the day that Tom asked Jamie to marry him, Jamie broke it off. This was done in a very public forum which was not of Jamie’s choosing.
Things start to happen. Books are moved, photos disappear, familiar faces are seen in the distance or close up - one minute they are there and next they are gone. Sounds are heard coming from the upstairs locked and empty flat. Jamie is being stalked.
The author does a brilliant job of creating tension in this story. I really didn’t want to stop although I could feel the tension building inside of me. I was so happy that I had to spend 4 hours on the train today as I could read and read.
The story is excellent and the book is well edited. It is also highly recommended. I am now going to have to read books 1 and 2 in the series.

Wow. Perlious Hearts is one hell of a creepy ride. Basically, AE Ryecart infuses some friends to lovers romance into this gruesome, stalker suspense.

The romance is good, as Jamie and Ed have clearly been destined for each other. They have both loved one another for a long time, without ever admitting their feelings. As they are brought together through Jamie's ordeal, they finally make their feelings known. They are sweet and wonderful together.

But first they have to survive. Their tale is full of twists and turns. It's not necessarily scary, just super duper creepy, giving the reader chills.

Jamie's the victim of non-stop mind games, that are slowly driving him crazy. He naturally starts to question his sanity, as someone is constantly doing little things to scare him, or make him question his memory. Basically, someone is messing with him and manipulating him, and they are doing a damn good job at shaking the man.

The author excels at conveying the eerie feels. I found myself fully immersed in this mysterious tale, and felt like constantly looking over my shoulder. This is far from my typical read, but it is very good.

If you like creepy tales, if you enjoy the slow mental torture of a main character, be sure to read Perilous Hearts. AE Ryecart will leave you satisfied and wanting to hide in a closet with this psychological thriller.

I’ve loved this Deviant Heart series which deals with romantic obsession and menace, and this novel is another great addition. Here, Jamie, the object of the obsession, is mysteriously subjected to psychological torture. Although he has the support of a knight in shining armour, Jamie starts to doubt his own sanity as objects in his flat appear or disappear, and too many things go bump in the night. There are some weird ex-boyfriends lurking, but which one? AE Ryecart has a talent for misdirection and slowly ratcheting up the tension - you sweat bullets waiting for each shoe to drop. It’s like watching a scary pantomime; I’m constantly wanting to yell, “He’s behind you!” Ryecart paints her main characters in bold blacks and whites: Jamie is slight and mentally fragile; his protector, Ed, is muscular, tough, and no-nonsense. In contrast, the ex-boyfriends are shadowy greys, emerging from, and vanishing into, the gloom. The constant veiled threat of violence is utterly compelling. 🎧 Dan Calley has narrated this series well: he has a good range of upper- and lower-class British accents and projects just the right amount of threat, sneer, anger, and fear into the characters. When he speaks, I believe him.

Sigh….It was a Trilogy….This is #3….The Trilogy is finished….But NOT FORGOTTEN!!

AE Ryecart has written a series worthwhile to be commended for one of the best that I have read this year. Each story had a note of this could happen to anyone of us and she has treated the characters as her own.

Billy who has lost all sense of self in book one to continue the rest in stalkers and dangerous boyfriends ……the entire gamut of wow!

In this last book, the unbelievable happens as we are led through a sweet romance and a horrible thriller you cannot imagine.

Jamie and Ed had been friends for years, NOT wanting to cross the line and lose a friendship…..each time they tip toed into danger, the pulled back…remaining best friend status. For those who love a friends to lovers book this will be well enjoyed….Those who like suspense and mystery will love it….Those who love BOTH will be ecstatic….me included.

Series is great….each book enjoyable….pick up a copy…..especially if you have Kindle Unlimited….its free

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 3 stars out of 5

Maybe if I had read this with some time in between the last book I would have liked it more but reading them close together just highlighted how much alike the stories are right down to the problems coming from two or three sides and the big confrontation happening very close to the end of the story. I mean the evil ex causing problems can get old and it’s what happened in the last two books.

Jamie is a sweetheart though has not made great choices for boyfriends and while deep down he wants Ed, he is sure he knows how that would go. Ed was hurt badly by his first serious boyfriend and since then has refused to even contemplate more than one night with someone. They have both stayed best friends since university even if there is something deeper there.

I understood Ed’s protectiveness in regard to Jamie but it was mostly him hiding how he actually feels about him and while he stands by him through thick and thin it was pretty clear to everyone but them. Jamie wants to be independent but it’s hard to push away the one rock in your life. The story was well written and I hated to see Jamie getting more and more frustrated with what was happening and not knowing what it was happening. You could see how helpless Ed felt while wanting to protect Jamie but not knowing where the threat was actually coming from.

The cover art is a nice picture of Jamie and is similar in style to the others in the series.

Perilous Hearts is book 3 in the Deviant Hearts series and it can be read as a standalone, which is what I did.

So, I don't really want to give anything away, but A.E. Ryecart did a fantastic job with this book. The psychological suspense part of it (stalking) was well thought out and developed and the villain(s) were right on point and scary as all hell. I was at the edge of my seat reading and my poor heart sure got a good workout with some of the things happening.

I loved Jamie, he definitely was stronger than he thought he was and Ed was swoon-worthy and supportive, even if they had me all kinds of frustrated with how long it took them to get together. It was undeniable they were made for each other and I adored them together.

I would've liked to see more of Jamie and Ed as a couple in the aftermath of what happened, but I was satisfied with what we got. The book was well-written and really, if you like this kind of suspense, you can't miss on Perilous Hearts.

I read one of Ryecart's Barista Boys books and found it ok. Just ok. It was quite sweet but still - just ok.
But when she takes it darker as in this series? Now that's becomes quite a different kettle of fish. Loved the suspense. It's no secret, really, who the bad guys are, but watching the MCs trying to basically fly under the radar to not get hurt was pretty hard on my nerves.

Ed and Jamie have been best friends forever but too chickenshit to try for more even though they both want to (just telling it like it is - I never understood this ability of guys to just actively make the decision not to 'risk the friendship' when they both really just want to jump each other's bones!)

Jamie finds himself the target of a stalker and Ed does his best to be there for him. They have an incredibly close relationship and take turns leaning on each other as the stalker plays his mind games. I loved Jamie and Ed as a couple. They just fit. And when they did cross the line from friends to lovers there were no regrets, just the knowledge that them together was just right.

I had the most anxious feeling through this whole book. Ryecart’s ability to keep me right on the edge from beginning to end was a thrill.
This was friends to lovers with a major level of thriller and mystery.
Ed kicks best friend, Jamie’s no good boyfriend out for him. Shortly afterward, Jamie starts to get tormented by this ex-boyfriend, by way of break ins to his apartment, little visits to his shop and other little things that make Jamie feel like he is going crazy. Meanwhile, a different ex from Jamie’s past surfaces. To top it all off, Jamie is trying to contain his desire for his best friend, Ed. Ed only wants to keep Jamie safe. He often stays at Jamie’s flat, sleeping on the couch just so he feels safe. The constant stress makes it harder and harder for him to keep his stronger-than-friendship feelings for Jamie contained.
I thought this book was great. Kept me on my toes for sure.

What an excellent story! Suspenseful, creepy, with tension mounting by little but constant increments, I was hooked from the beginning.

And yes, I knew that something was very wrong since the first creeky sound, but I also understood why Jamie was trying so hard to normalize all that was happening. And I also understood why he was having such a hard time telling off to his less than savoury ex. We are all brain-wired into politeness, and if someone isn't being overly rude, even if they are making us uncomfortable, we don't feel that we are entitled to make a scene.

And I really liked how the romance developed, slowly but with a sense of inevitability; they both knew that their time had come. And yes, Ed seems a little bit overprotective by moments, but I believe that it is the product of the circumstances more than a personal trait, so that's okay for me:P

Dan Calley did a great job with the narration.

Gaslighting—manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity

Jamie and Ed had been friends for years. Watching each other go through failed relationships. Never allowing themselves to give in to their feelings for each other. When Jamie’s current relationship implodes, Ed is there for him.

Jamie begins to think he is going crazy. Everything is a little off, objects moved, things out of place, food in his refrigerator he didn’t purchase. Ed is right there and they finally get to be with each other. But as his paranoia increases things go really wrong.

Good main characters and evil villain(s). Well thought out with equal amounts of tension and a nice love story. Reminded me of old black and white movies. I enjoyed it.

Another awesome installment in the Deviant Hearts series! Every time I think the last one can't be topped, this author proves me wrong. Ed and Jamie's story started off with them frustratedly doing the friends bit as Jamie works his way through a rough break up. When they finally gave in and came together, I was so happy. I was also happy that Ed and Jamie's relationship never wavered as they went through increasingly nerve-wracking obstacles. I don't know if my heart could've taken some of the twists and turns without their solidarity as a couple. A fantastic read if you love your friends-to-lovers trope mixed with a twisty thriller.

Tantalizingly Good

Jamie and Ed be still my heart. This book had my heart beating from the first page to the last. Two friends who don't want to ruin their friendship but can't help their feelings are taken on a wild ride with Jamie being the focus of two deranged exes and Ed being the one to pull Jamie from the depths of despair over and over. Twist and turns make them realize they've been in love with each other from the start. This was a hard earned HEA with an epilogue which is exactly what I need from my books. The world ceased to exist while I was reading and that is a sign of a great writer to me.. I highly recommend this series.

This story was completely intriguing to me: both the friends to lovers part and the creepy stalker aspect of it. I think the author has exceeded my expectations for this third book in the series!
Ed and Jamie have been best friends for almost a decade, but despite everything (their obvious mutual attractions, everybody thinking they’re already a couple, every other relationship not working…) the time is never right for them to be together. Things change just when Jamie’s life seems to start to be torn to shreds. Strange and disturbing things happen and Ed is Jamie’s rock in the storm.
A beautiful, intriguing, attention-grabbing book, narrated masterfully by the super talented Dan Calley!

What a poignant, powerful, emotionally charged, raw, intense, gritty, gripping, grab-you-by-the-feels, fantastic, beautiful, and totally awesome friends-to-lovers story. Filled with mystery, madness, and more twists and turns than a roller coaster, it had me hooked from the very first page. I would DEFINITELY recommend getting this marvelous book ASAP.

A very emotional, intense, and moving book. Jamie and Ed have been surpassing their feeling from each for years. After a bad break up Jamie, Ed is there for Jamie. From the beginning to the end the book had my attention and the edge of my seat. There is romance and suspense and I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.
