Health Politics and Policy

Rate this book
The fourth edition of Health Politics and Policy examines the political arena in which United States health care policies are made, and provides a framework for understanding how the process works. This book conveys the excitement of health care politics and covers the issues facing the American health care system. Factors that shape health policy are discussed in detail, including values, private players, and government, as well as the resulting dynamic of these forces. A comparison of the U.S. system to others offers a foundation for understanding our system within an international context.

Each chapter is written by a different author. Some of these chapters are pretty good, like James Morone's own discussion of the presidency. However, It also has some pretty awful chapters, like "10 Myths about Healthcare Lobbyists," which includes an attempt to deny that money influences politics in healthcare (including pharmaceuticals). It's also got some pretty egregious typographical errors; for example, a chapter is titled "The Warfare State" instead of "The Welfare State."

In short, there are some good chapters, but it was very expensive (even by textbook standards) and doesn't deliver the level of quality writing and analysis I would expect from a texbook.
