While reading this book, I was struck by how similar it is to Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. With Love from Gran shows it age more than Dear Zoo though, and generally speaking, I believe Dear Zoo is a better book. The lightly implied moral of this book is that people are more important than things, however, this is perhaps overshadowed by the mention of an ivory gift from Bombay. Children who have been to the Zoo recently are likely aware of the negative impact that ivory trade has had on elephant populations. This has the potential for condemning the book.
Very sweet book! I'm sure all the students may relate to this story due to their love for parents/grandparents/etc when they travel. From this book, you may use it when talking about addresses, locations, geography, traveling, gifts, family, etc. Their are lots of journal entries that could come from this along with nice pictures.
