Sometimes the Dashwood girls do not seem like sisters. Elinor is all calmness and reason, and can be relied upon for practical, common sense opinions. Marianne, on the other hand, is all sensibility, full of passionate and romantic feeling. She has no time for dull common sense - or for middle-aged men of thirty-five, long past the age of marriage. True love can only be felt by the young, of course. And if your heart is broken at the age of seventeen, how can you ever expect to recover from the passionate misery that fills your life, waking and sleeping?

Sense and Sensibility by Clare West , Jane Austen
I accidentally picked up this rewritten version of Sense and Sensibility, but I still enjoyed it. It was a simple story but was a pleasant, comforting read. And I loved that it was so short! I finished in only a few days. Maybe I'll eventually read the original but for now I think I'd rather read a different classic.
Caution: negative comments pertaining to Jane Austen included in my review.
What can I say, I've always considered myself the biggest Jane Austen fan but this book brought me face to face with the fact that I'm really not as well read in Austen as I like to think and even more shockingly, I didn't really enjoy this book (collective gasp). My dislike for S&S is mostly front-loaded. This book is written in three volumes and the first is EXCRUCIATINGLY slow. Several members of our book group didn't get past the first couple of chapters. Plus, I find the idle lifestyle of the Austen set to be empty, sad, and without purpose unless one finds purpose in critiquing the action and speech of all of one's acquaintances.
So, the book gained interest in volumes 2 and 3 and by the end I was enjoying it - who doesn't enjoy the heroine getting her man? Even if the man is less than exciting (let's be honest, Edward is no Darcy). I was confused about Elinor's forgiveness of Willoughby - the scoundrel who impregnated and abandoned a woman - she seemed less concerned with this fact than his breaking Marianne's heart. I kept thinking - am I reading this right? And did Marianne really love Colonel Brandon - I wasn't convinced. Our book club resolved to read another Austen next year and I look forward to it. . .
“The more I know of the world, the more I am convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love. I require so much!” Sense And Sensibility, Chapter 3 On Expectations and requirement regarding a life and soul partner.
Good for a retelling of the story. Definitely gave me a taste of what's coming in the original. I quite like the story, and I'm excited to read the novel written by Jane Austen herself.
Meh, could've been 3 stars. I have doubts on the fourth one.
The start was slow but good, I hated how stupid their brother is, and how easily he gets controlled by fanny.
I hated how nothing more was said about Eliza. I hated the whole Willoughby part, he was boring, really.
I hated how Elinor's way of thinking changed at the end (at least it seemed like it changed to me) and how Marianne and the Colonel married just like that.
It was as if Jane Austen was carefully writing the story at first, putting the right pieces of the puzzle together then suddenly just got bored of it and rushed it. That's how it seemed to me.
Book could've been better, this is a disappointment as my first J.A. book.
