Rönesans ve Barok

Rate this book
“Bu inceleme Rönesans’ın çözülmesini ele almaktadır. Sanatçıların tarihine değil, üslupların tarihine katkıda bulunmak isteğindedir. Amacım çöküşün belirtilerini gözlemlemek ve mümkünse ‘gevşeme ve keyfilik’ açısından sanatın mahrem yaşamını gözlemlememizi sağlayacak yasayı bulmaktır. Sanat tarihinin asıl amacının bu olduğunu sanıyorum.”

“Rönesans’tan Barok’a geçiş Modern çağın sanatsal evriminin en ilgi çekici başlıklarından biridir.”

Heinrich Wölfflin (June 21, 1864 - July 19, 1945) was a Swiss art historian.

Wölfflin's objective classifying principles ("painterly" vs. "linear" and the like) were influential in the development of formal analysis in art history in the early 20th century.
He taught at Basel, Berlin and Munich in the generation that raised German art history to pre-eminence.
His three great books, still consulted, are Renaissance und Barock (1888), Die Klassische Kunst (1898, "Classic Art"), and Kunstgeschichtliche Grundbegriffe (1915, "Principles of Art History").

Primarily a study of post-Renaissance architecture, Wolfflin's concentration on the 'painterly' provides wider insight into baroque style. Originally published toward the end of the nineteenth century, Wolfflin also fails to make the more modern distinction between the later Baroque and what we now define as the Mannerist style that directly preceded the High Renaissance. Often sweeping in its judgements, there is, nonetheless, something undoubtedly compelling about his writing in full flow.

One of the best explanations of the Baroque that I’ve read.

Having never read an art history book before, this work was quite awesome. Wolfflin mostly focuses on architecture, so there were some repeatedly-used terms that I had to look up. However, his descriptions of the baroque style, and explanation of the shift from Renaissance style to baroque, is incredible (vivid, easy to understand, and with plenty of examples). Most of the examples he repeatedly refers to are found, either as photos or drawings, throughout the book. There are also lots of comparisons made with the Renaissance style, to help put things in perspective. The first part of the book is more generally applicable to studies of the baroque, while the later sections are about specific sorts of buildings during the baroque. Highly recommended.
