Your world is ripped apart. All you want is to find somewhere safe. Lose yourself. Never feel again.
When Meghan May’s world disintegrates around her, she moves to the city. Inhabited by angels sworn to protect humankind, it’s the safest place she can be.
In her new life, she doesn’t let anyone close. Never lets anyone in… Until a chance encounter changes everything.
Meghan is thrust into a world she never knew existed, where angels hunt shifters and kill the humans who help them. She’s unwittingly helped a shifter. Now angels are hunting her.
Can Meghan rely on the three sexy men who vow to help her—an unlikely alliance of a shifter, human, and angel? Will she ever be able to return to the safety of the life she led before they came into her life? Does she even want to?
Everything Meghan thought she knew is changing. The walls she put up are breaking.
Outwitting angels is one thing. Feeling is another.
Awoken is Book 1 in The Ascension of Meghan May series. It is a slow burn, paranormal, reverse harem #whychoose story intended for mature audiences (18+ years).
Jaya Moon lives on the south coast of Australia with her husband and son. She digs holes by day and writes at night and is tempted to tell you she's a grave digger (that sounds far more interesting than her real day job).
She writes steamy, character driven romance novels.
I was really surprised to find out that this book was the debut by this author. This book was well constructed, imaginative and really well written, it had the assurance of a much more experienced author.
Meghan lives a lonely life in the city, after losing everything precious to her. She works in a bar, has one measly friend and tries to keep to herself to keep her heart safe. She lives in a world where angels are real and police the streets, keeping humans safe from harm. They even come into the bar where she works.
One night everything about her safe routines changes when she saves a shifter from harm. A shifter she didn’t know could exist. Everything she knew about the world was overturned and the only thing keeping her on her feet are three men, the shifter she saved, his human friend and their angel ally.
The world building for this book was very different. In this world angels and shifters are at war. Angels see shifters as tainted by the devil and have been trying to kill them for generations, along with any ally they might have. It’s a dangerous and secretive world, hidden from humans. I really liked the way this world was revealed to the reader, done slowly, with each new piece of information building on the previous one.
The characters are all three dimensional and intriguing. We only get to see the first layers of all of them in this first book in the series, but what we see makes me want to read the next book immediately, because I want to know more about them and what happens to them next.
The plot isn’t high action, but there is plenty of tension and dynamic emotional interaction. It kept me gripped by what was happening and the pages just disappeared quickly until I hit the end. There is a slight cliffhanger because the story is obviously not over, however the end of the book didn’t leave me wanting to throttle the author. Also, the next book is out already so I don’t have to wait to find out what happens to the characters next.
I recommend this book if you like your RH to have plenty of emotion and imagination.
Rcvd an advanced reader copy from the author for giving my two cents. We meet bartender Meghan May who has no desire to give any Angel's the time of day since they made themselves known to the world. Her life dramatically changed in the last 5 years and has a no man policy. After turning down a drink from a sexy angel, she walks home to witness an owl being tortured and jumps in to rescue it from the hands of of angel. When that said Angel tries to get her to go away she sprays him with bear spray and takes the owl. What she didn't expect was an owl turning into a naked man thr next morning. This throws Meghan into the world of the unknown and it brings back memories from her youth with her parents and sister and what she saw when she touched animals. But will it get her into more trouble? Can the owl help her or bring death to her door?
Incomplete series with a cliffhanger ending and a “push away your soulmate for their own good” theme.
Since I don't normally write reviews unless I have something specific to say, here's the break down of how I rate my books...
1 star... This book was bad, so bad I may have given up and skipped to the end. I will avoid this author like the plague in the future.
2 stars... This book was not very good, and I won't be reading any more from the author.
3 stars... This book was ok, but I won't go out of my way to read more, But if I find another book by the author for under a dollar I'd pick it up.
4 stars... I really enjoyed this book and will definitely be on the look out to pick up more from the series/author.
5 stars... I loved this book! It has earned a permanent home in my collection and I'll be picking up the rest of the series and other books from the author ASAP.
I wasn't expecting the story to go the way it did. As someone that prefers to only read a couple lines of the blurb, just enough to see if I might be interested, I definitely wasn't expecting that story plot.
It was an interesting take on the Fallen. I wasn't a huge fan of the Owl, and I really did not get enough of a feel for the Angel. Basically there was just enough for a story. Considering it ended right on the edge of a cliff, I still gave it 5 stars considering the story engaged me for a few hours. I really hope that more character depth comes with the next book. I'm looking forward to finding out more about what the deal is with Meghan!
Unlike the rest of the world's population, Meghan was never sure that the angels, that suddenly appeared and started to live among humans, can be trusted. After saving an owl, a shifter, from the angel trying to destroy it, Meghan is wanted for questioning. Tallow, the owl shifter, and his friends Mox and Abriel, try to prepare Meghan for questioning by Lucien. After nearly dying from Lucien's enrapturement, Meghan will be devastated when the three men she has come to care for decide to abandon her, the only way to keep her safe they explain.
Wonderful, unique characters, and a plot with suspense and surprising twists. Fascinating beginning to a series I look forward to reading.
I am voluntarily leaving an honest and non-incentivized review of this ARC.
Jaya Moon is a new author for me, but with an introduction like Awoken (The Ascension of Meghan May Book 1) she is definitely a writer I want to pursue. This is a wonderfully creative paranormal story with a neat slow burn reverse harem (and the guys here are yummy). I love Meghan and love the world created for her (and those guys) to inhabit. Pure fun. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
I really liked Meghan. Her whole world is turned upside down after saving an owl. I like that she is so resilient and keeps on fighting. I have mixed emotions about the guys. I really like Mox, although just goes along with the others, Abriel is interesting. He is a jerk, but he is honest about it. At this point, Tallow irritates me. He is a jerk and kind of whiny, and I don’t like how he push-pulls with Meghan. I’m hoping that if/when he gets redeemed he does a little bit of groveling. I really like Moon’s writing and am intrigued by the story line, so will be watching for the next story in the series :)
Megan was not a lover of angels. They had Arrived years ago so by now, everyone accepted that they were there to help humanity. But what if that was all a lie? Meghan was on the way home when she saw an angel about to kill an owl. She loves animals, so she confronted him. Maybe that wasn't a good idea....it causes her a lot of problems when she finds herself the object of an angel inquisition. It turns out these angels were not sent to protect mankind, they are fallen angels, kicked out of heaven. And now Meghan is in deep trouble.
Can she find a way out? Will her new friends help or hinder?? Read on my friends
First let me state that I received an Advance Reader Copy, (ARC), but this in no way influences my review. I always leave an honest review. Also this author is new to me, and I hope not for long.
Wow!!! This is a gr8story. Angels that are not at all what we believe, and shifters. Meghan is one tough cookie, she takes no shut from anyone, including angels. There were times she made me snicker over her sassy mouth, and times I felt her pain. Ms. Moon writes a gr8 story and really grabs a reader right away. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. I recommend this read. 5 Thumbs up
This book is the best! Like you should read it rigth now! Meghan is just living without really living, having an empty life because if you don't have people you care, you can't pode them. And then everything chances, She saves an owel and all of the sudden She hás tree sexy guys in her life. The sensitive Tallow, the sexy Mox and the surly Abriel. It's like a joke, tree guys went to a bar, a human, a shifter and any Angel... you just can't stop reading. I loved it! I want the Next One please!
I’m a huge paranormal fan and am so excited to have found a new author I love! This book throws us straight into the action and I immediately liked Meghan. I kept reading late so I could find out what happened. The world is original and interesting and I loved the relationships between Meghan and the guys. This was a very satisfying read and I’m looking forward to reading the next book - there’s still a few unanswered questions!
Awoken is an interesting twist on fallen angels and shifters.
Overall I really enjoyed Awoken. I had some trouble at the beginning of the book figuring out the dynamics of the characters, but as the story progressed the pieces started coming together. I am really looking forward to the next book. This is what I would say is a slow burn, so more of the story in this first book than the steam. Happy reading!
This book was good, but lackluster in some ways. I guessed who the big boss angel was pretty early on. The story also felt rushed once she saved the owl and it all zooms on too quickly from there.
First time reading this author, easy reading with a good back story, love that the shifter is a tawny owl, very different. Look forward to book two and finding out where Meghan and her 3 delinquents are headed.
Great paranormal read. This is a fast-paced read with loads of drama and suspense. The characters have lots of depth and the story really draws you into their world. I liked it.
I loved this book. A very unique spin on angels and shifters. The characters were well developed and the world building was fabulous. Looking forward to reading the next book.
I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Like others, I read the short description on this book and thought it might be a quick, alright read. I was extremely mistaken. The author has taken what often feels like a well-worn genre and kicked it into high gear with the suspense. It took me only a couple hours to power through because I honestly couldn't put it down.
Our main character, Meghan, has a past we only initially get glimpses of, and it makes her all the more interesting. She keeps everyone at arm's length, despite having plenty of interest from others at the bar she works at. Still, a chance encounter where she saves a helpless owl from attack thrusts her into a world she has all wrong and into a medley of very sexy, very reluctant men who spend a great deal of time trying to avoid the spell she's clearly cast over them all.
There's still so much more to the story we don't know, and so much to learn about each of our characters, that's I'm aching for the next installment.
