You know how you feel when you eat a delicious chocolate chip cookie, and you promise yourself that you’ll just eat one, or maybe two?
And then after eating them, they tasted so good, that you promise yourself you’ll just eat one more?

Well, this anthology of Regency Romances are so good, that they made me feel like that. Each one is written by a favorite regency author, each style her wonderful own.
I just breezed right through reading them, not only because they are not very long, but also because they are such a delight.

Falling for the Earl by Arietta Richmond (12 Chp + Epilogue) - A gentle and sweet story with an older couple finding love, second time around.
Shopping for the Gentleman by Isabella Thorne (5 Chp + Epilogue) - Mildred is a long time widow whose world revolves around her 5 nearly grown up children. On a Spring visit to her husband’s family she meets a gentleman author, who jolts her out of her rut and encourages her to think of herself as an individual rather than a mother. A pleasant and gentle romance.
A Duke for the Dowager by Catherine Windsor (8 Chp) - Fate plays a hand after Elizabeth avoids a dinner party aimed at introducing her to a prospective suitor. Mistaken identities abound in this delightful romance.
The New Governess of Chiswick by Grace Austen (7 Chp) - Letitia has to take a position as a governess when her father’s investments sink to the bottom of the ocean. After falling to secure eight positions her future is becoming precarious but eventually the widowed Earl of Mintford reluctantly employs her at his house in Chiswick for his five year old niece. What follows is a touch of the gothic and attempted murder.
The Earl’s True Love by Katherine Keats (9 Chp) - Young Lord Worthington follows his duty and marries a young woman of rank and status but his heart never forgets his childhood friend. Ten years later he returns to the home he grew up in, expecting Joanna to be married with children but instead finds her a spinster.
The Unforgettable Duchess by Charlotte Darcy (10 Chp + Epilogue) - Forced into an unwanted marriage, Daphne gives up all hope of love and happiness. Her only true joy is in her daughter until that is, her husband dies and her one true love returns from sea. A lovely story with a HEA.
The Earl’s Healing Heart by Eleanor St Clair (10 Chp + Epilogue) - An unusual story, featuring abolition of slavery, Virginia plantations and a man who values and respects a woman’s mind.
The Duke’s Obsession by Regina Darcy (11 Chp) - Desdemona’s husband dies, leaving her in dire straits in France, leaving her no choice but to flee the country and seek sanctuary with her brother in law in London. With regard to this story’s HEA, the author seems unaware that before the 20th Century the marriage of a man to his sister in law was forbidden (see: http://www.genetic-genealogy.co.uk/To...). Even if their relationship had been that of cousins, the story would have been spoilt for me by Desdemona’s foolishness in regard to her proposed solution re the threats to her son. It’s a shame because otherwise I really enjoyed this story.
The Reclusive Duke’s Second Chance by Lydia Pembroke (19 Chp + Epilogue) - When her father loses his fortune, Isabelle knows she must marry well, that any chance of a love match for her is now at an end. Then at a country house party she meets a tortured Duke with whom she connects but how will the Duke, having been duped by a woman before, react when he finds out the truth?
A Daughter for the Duke by Kelly Anne Bruce (9 Chp + Epilogue) - Hannah loses her sea captain husband and nine months later meets another naval man. However both of them are poor and even if this were not the case, how can she go through the loneliness and heartache of waiting at home for months, even years, whilst yet another husband is at sea?
Claiming the Duke’s Heart by Sophia Wilson (6 Chp) - Both parties in this story fall in love with each other in a matter of weeks despite their inequality in position/rank and both having been desperately in love with others prior to their meeting.
The Earl’s Treachery by Sophia Ansley (8 Chp) - a really enjoyable story about a young man who repents his shameful behaviour and makes amends for it. Though I am unsure why Barbara and her sisters were not called upon to attend Bridgette’s wedding or at least informed of it.
A Song for the Viscount by Lenora Levon (7 Chp) - This love story seemed too rushed. They met on a street, spent an evening at a musicale (where they wouldn’t have been conversing) and then a morning visit, at the end of which he proposes!
This set also includes previews of other stories by each of the authors. If, like me you find it annoying to only read part of a story, can I suggest that you bookmark the start of each of the complete stories from the contents page, then you can easily jump to the next book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this boxset. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I am reviewing the second story, Isabella Thorne: Shopping for a Gentleman. Typical of the great stories in this book, Shopping for a Gentleman tells the story of a widow who has dedicated herself and her personal income to rearing her five children, being available to them at all times. She has made it a habit to take the children each summer to the country to visit their cousins primarily because her son stands to inherit the title and land now held by the older brother of her desceased husband who is father to four girls. They are staying in one of her brother-in-laws houses in town, next door to a bachelor author, also renting and friends with her brother-in-law. She first meets the man while both are shopping, when he asks her advice while fabric shopping. He asks her to accompany him to advise him at the tailor and cobbler. Instead she writes out quick directions to them both. She continues to avoid him but she is formally introduced at a supper with all the family to which he is also invited. He continues to visit over the hedges, short walks while the children play with cousins, small bets they won't miss her when she is sure they won't be able to do without her, eventually going riding with him, until she surprises him by asking him to take her fishing. This story has a happy ending like the other dozen stories in this collection. Recommended! Edit Delete |Comment| Permalink Posting publicly as: retired to read Insert product link What's this? Love, a Second Chance: A Regency Romance Springtime Collection: 13 Delightful Regency Springtime Stories (Regency Collections Book 9) I am reviewing the second story, Isabella Thorne: Shopping for a Gentleman. Focusing on "Shopping for a Gentleman", one of the books included in this collection, this is a nice story about an older woman getting a second chance at love.
Mildred Stelter is a widow who had always been entirely devoted to her children who were now growing up. As she is shopping, she helps out a gentleman with her advice on fabric for clothing. Coincidentally, Giles Leighton is actually her neighbor, living next door to the country residence where she is staying.
Although Mildred is not looking for marriage, Giles encourages her to grow and explore new opportunities, to fill her time with the things that are important to her now. But will she change her mind about finding love at her age? Will she give herself a second chance to find happiness?
This is a very good story. Defining herself only as a mother, Mildred was prepared to do nothing for herself as a woman and an individual! She definitely needed a wake-up call to realize that life has so much more to offer when one phase of your life is moving into the next. And we can make each phase as wonderful as we want it to be! The characters are interesting and the story line is very thought-provoking. It’s a worthwhile story to experience.
I always dread receiving an ARC of a box set, not only because there are so many books to get through, but because there is always a mix of really good and really dreadful writing. This book is no exception. There were five books that I could have easily given a five star rating, but some of the others would have earned two stars at most, due to their poorly researched background. However, for the price, the book is worthwhile purchasing for the five good writers with well researched background and the fact that all the stories are clean and romantic. The book can therefore be read by all age groups. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
OMG, ITS FINALLY HERE!!! A Regency collection that keeps your attention on the pages and your heart engaged. A fantastic work of art from some of the best regency authors of today. If you're looking for excitement, adventure, drama and danger, then you've got it all right here. My imagination was tweaked as I was catapulted back into the past of a great era as we know it. Twists and turns abound with nerve racking ferocity. The characters were down to earth and believable. The scenes and storylines were so realistic in detail its something to behold. Great job guys and thanks for sharing.
This Review is for Shopping For A gentleman by Isabella Thorne. I enjoyed this story of Mildred Stelter a widow with 5 children who she takes annually to visit their cousins in the country, while on a shopping trip in town she meets Giles Leighton and her life is never the same. This is a second chance at love for a mature couples and the characters and storyline are well written. I received an advanced reader copy of this story and am voluntarily giving this honest review.
Awesome collection of Regency tales. Each author who has contributed to this set, has a different writing style and although all the stories follow the same theme, they each have unique storylines which keep your interest from beginning to end. I enjoyed this boxed set very much, and couldn’t decide which story I liked best. I will definitely be following some new authors in the future. I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This review is for Shopping for a Gentleman by Isabella Thorne. Once I read the rest, I will update this review. Mildred is a widow who has five children and she is absolutely devoted to them. Giles is a writer who enjoys the peace and freedom of the countryside. A sweet short story to enjoy. Quick to read and enjoyable. The only but I have is that I would have liked to know a little bit more about Giles.
A box set containing 13 regency romance novels. A fantastic collection that just caught me in every story. Lots of romance, passion, adventure, danger, drama and emotions. I liked the twists and that the authors have taken the time to make their research about the period. Absolutely a box set that is captivating and worth the read.
Thirteen fantastic books for all who love Regency! The stories are funny, full of life and surprise... and chance for a second love... characters so different but interesting, full of hope and doubts... surely you can identify yourself with them... They will entrainment you until the last page! I received a free book and this is my honest and voluntary review
I thoroughly enjoyed all the stories in this collection. It also have me the opportunity to discover new authors that I will enjoy following. Each of the short stories were very well written. I will be checking out more of the contributing author's works.
A lovely collection of well written stories based on the idea of a second chance at love. I have found that the box sets around Arietta Richmond give great value and enjoyment. I think my favourite stories are the ones by Arietta Richmond. Isabella Thorne and Kelly Anne Bruce.
I would have given 5 stars except for the 2 chapters of another book after each story. I had to go thru them to read the next story. I don' t like reading parts of books.
Love, a Second Chance Springtime Collection by Arietta Richmond and other very good authors. This was a good series with a great plots and cast of characters. My free opinion ARC. Thanks
I enjoyed each of these short novellas. They really were not quite believable but they were pleasant and entertaining. I read books to be entertained and I was.
I received a complimentary copy of Shopping for a Gentleman, but have now read almost all the stories in this collection. This is a wonderful collection of clean, Regency romances from a group of excellent authors. You will read stories with dukes, earls, mystery, murder, and more. Shopping for a Gentleman is a short, sweet Regency romance. Widow Mildred Stelter is devoted to her children, but while visiting relatives in the country, she accidentally meets Giles Leighton, her neighbor. Through their friendship, Mildred blossoms and grows carefree, but feels it’s wrong to think about love at her age. Through some scheming, she learns what is most important to her. I love happy endings and this one is especially romantic. I have posted a separate review for “Falling for the Earl.” I found these stories to be very interesting and entertaining. I hope others will enjoy these stories as much as I have. I received an advance reader copy of this collection. I have voluntarily reviewed it and given my honest opinion.
Book 2 Shopping for a Gentleman I was leaving a review for this story because I had received a complimentary copy, but decided to purchase the entire set because I enjoyed this story so much.
Mildred Stelter is a widow who has a comfortable life, has has reached the age where her 5 children are all almost grown. Once a year she ventures to the country for her children to visit with their cousins. She really has no desire to be there other than her commitment to her late husbands family and the training of her eldest son in managing his inheritance. She keeps herself busy when her children are off pursuing their own activities, and it is during one of her “busy” shopping trips to the small town that she meets Giles Leighton, and her life takes an unexpected turn. I always enjoy Isabella Thornes stories as they are well written, with interesting characters and story lines. I received an advanced readers copy of this story in return for a voluntary review.
