In 51 BC, the Greek Ptolemaic dynasty has ruled Egypt for nearly three hundred years despite generations of betrayal amongst the clever and cruel Ptolemies. The old pharaoh has died, leaving his throne to his joint Ptolemy XIII and the young king's older sister, the indomitable Cleopatra. As a clash of personalities and ambitions hurdles the ancient kingdom towards crisis, the warring factions of the court are blinded to the fact that there are more than two royal children in this dangerous family...
Princess Arsinoë has spent her childhood roaming the kaleidoscope world of cosmopolitan Alexandria, content to avoid the endless wars of the palace by living more in her head than in the often unsettling real world. But when the mysterious gods of her beloved homeland enter her dreams, calling on her to defend Egypt from the fury of the dynasty and the arrival of an even greater threat in the form of Julius Caesar, Arsinoë finds herself increasingly drawn into an escalating maelstrom of intrigue and violence that she must learn to navigate to save all that she holds dear…
Sarah Holz grew up in Buffalo, NY, where the long winters gave her plenty of time to read and dabble in writing. She now lives in her adopted hometown, Pittsburgh, with her loving spouse and completely ridiculous cats, all of whom indulge her tastes for obscure trivia and esoteric history. She still reads too much, but is trying to learn to balance that out with her rediscovered love of writing.
Her God’s Wife series is a historical fantasy reimagining of late Ptolemaic Egypt and early Imperial Rome, with a focus on the women of the era. She has also written two stand alone novels: The Flight of Virtue, an alternative history set in revolutionary France featuring Theodosia Burr and Sally Hemings; and The Gourd and the Stars, a medieval romance about the fall of the Latin crusader kingdom of Jerusalem.
Sarah Holz weaves a remarkable tale of Egyptian and Roman dynasties; the loveliest new book I’ve read in quite some time. Intelligent and beautifully written, this book drew me in from the start and wouldn’t let go until I read the last page with regret. A mix of history , fiction and a bit of help from the god’s; this sweeping story left me looking for another chapter. More please, Ms Holz! And quickly!
As someone who does not partake in the historical-fiction genre regularly, I admit that I was not sure how I would enjoy this kind of story; I was very much mistaken on this assumption. Sarah Holz does a tremendous job making Arsinoë and all the other characters relatable to a modern reader. Her writing style gives each description and scene so much vividness than just its mere words; you truly feel that you are with the characters experiencing and feeling each moment. I guarantee you will lose yourself (and time) as you read this fantastic story. Since I did not have an extensive knowledge of Egyptian mythology and its language, the book does provide additional appendices that accompanies the reader (I found it easier to have the appendices bookmarked on my Kindle which allows for more efficient referencing); this is to show that you should not be intimidated by the topic in order to enjoy the overall story since you will definitely learn something along the way. The amount of research performed by Sarah emanates off the page and you know that you are reading a high-quality book as a result. I am excited and wait in feverous anticipation for the next book that Sarah Holz produces; a five-start debut from a remarkable author.
It is evident that author Sarah Holz has done her research and immersed herself in the ancient world. This book has inspired me to do some research of my own about the various persons within the book. As a librarian I can truly appreciate the breadth that this author covered, not only within the time period, but geographically as well (Alexandria!!). I became ensnared by this story that the author weaved.
I've always had a love for Egypt in the time of the Pharaohs and its pantheon of gods & goddesses, but this book makes them come to life with how they interact with the characters, especially Arsinoë . I never really gave much thought to Set previously, but now I am a fangirl. I loved seeing the gods/goddesses roles throughout the story and was eager to see their influence on the characters. The transition between dream world and real world worked well.
The main character Arsinoë is outstanding. I was curious about her from the beginning, because everyone has heard of her famous sibling Cleopatra. I furiously turned pages as the palace intrigue segued into action scenes that came to life across the page. There were times when I was reading on my lunch breaks that I truly heard sounds of battle, the whisper of sand, and the undulation of the Nile. As shiny Rome and its emissaries came into sight within the pages I found myself squinting as if coming out of a sandstorm, scrutinizing their roles in this novel. It was also interesting to see Arsinoë's interplay with Julius Caesar, along with other well known Roman figures.
I found myself rooting for the supporting characters as well throughout the book and towards the end, I confess to reaching for tissues.
Stick with the story. Take your time to learn the characters at the beginning and once you do the rest of the pages will simply fly by until you go back to savor the writing.
If you're a fan of historical fiction authors Wilbur Smith and Michelle Moran – you will enjoy this book. Fans of Elizabeth Peters, Diana Gabaldon, Ken Follett, Philippa Gregory, Jennifer Chiaverini and Jean Auel would find this an intriguing read.
If you've watched Game of Thrones (or read it), documentaries about Egypt, Roman Empire and/or Rome – give this book a read. If you also enjoyed other period dramas such as Marco Polo, Vikings, The Last Kingdom, The Tudors and/or The Borgias, this book touches on the notes that they evoke as well with conflicting families and a rich historic backdrop. The God's Wife is worthy of its own television series!
Kudos to this first book by author Sarah Holz – I can't wait to read more!
An outstanding first novel by Sarah Holz. Ending with a cliffhanger, Holz's words were luscious and intentional. Each metaphor, description, and form of imagery was carefully thought out and placed, like an artist using watercolors. I don't think she repeated any descriptor and it left me in awe.
The end will leave you in shock and reaching for tissues. Parts of the story will make you cringe. And you'll fall in love with Arsinoe from start to finish. You'll see how a young girl grows up to vanquish her sister, but also spends so much time running away from her. The dream sequences will take you to the far reaching places of your mind and subconscious.
The appendices in the back were helpful, but I would have liked to see them be more comprehensive. For example not every Egyptian word was listed. I would have also liked a family tree and a cast of characters similar to that in a play simply because there are so many of them, and it's hard to keep track of who is related to who. While the book is over 500 pages, I think this extra information would be beneficial to additional books. I also found it difficult to remember what year we were in as the story progressed for Arsinoe from teenager to adult.
Overall, a fantastic first novel by Holz! I can't wait to read more of her work!
I don't write many reviews but here goes. This book deserves it. The God's Wife is a totally absorbing and mesmerizing read. I was riveted from the first page to the last sentence. An historical fiction, Sarah's story is told through the eyes of Arsinoe, younger sister to Cleopatra. It's packed with courage and honor, betrayal and fear. Arsinoe is a true heroine and I loved rooting for her. She never lets me down. Sarah's supporting characters are pictured so beautifully, each one vivid to the mind's eye. I loved the language and style. Her interspersing of Egyptian words lends authenticity and kept me focused of the locale of the story. The God's wife is filled with love and heartbreak. The adventure is all the more for knowing it's based in actual events. Sarah's love for her characters and her subject shines through the dialog. I recommend this book highly. It's the most creative story I've read in a long while.
Fun to read. Great background on Egyptian deities. Well researched. I think the characters are well drawn with realistic motivations. Would I read another book by this author? Absolutely.
It is evident that author Sarah Holz has done her research and immersed herself in the ancient Egypt and takes her reader along for the ride. I became pulled into this story immediately. I was hesitant at first by the length of the book, but now I can’t wait to read more.
I loved the transition between dream world and real world it really worked and it made it very interesting.
I found myself involved and supporting the characters all through the book. I was often delighted, surprised and moved to tears during this great read.
