A Valentine's Day dare given to a nemesis backfires in sexy, fabulous way.
Honey Combover slays them, honeyyy... and hey, she can't help it if her "equipment" is too large and in charge to stay tucked away during her drag performances, right? The school principal, Godric Sheppard, tells Larry that he can't lead the Glee Club in performing Born This Way while dressed as his drag persona. He has a point, since Honey is infamous for her wardrobe malfunctions. Determined to show the uptight little prig that he can keep things, er, tucked away… Larry invites him to catch his show to prove him wrong.
After the inevitable untucking event occurs, Godric knows two things. One, Larry needs a keeper. And two? It probably needs to be him. Godric's firm hand and gentle touch is just what Larry needs. It doesn’t hurt that Larry melts a little every time Godric calls him pretty.
This is a 16k short story intended for adult readers only. The light bdsm themes, drag queens, and snake infestations will leave you smiling and begging for more. But what else could you expect from an S. Hawke book?
Susan Hawke is more widely known for her mpreg writings as Susi Hawke; this new name is a departure from that. Whether written by Susan or Susi, the books are filled with that all-important love, laughter, and family; the only difference is that this name has no male pregnancy.
Work enemies feel... Insta-lust at a drag show and... Go have sex with.... A bit of D/s and... Pretty much decide they are “it” for each other..... All on Valentine’s Day.
There was no growth, just a change in perception of each other. One thing I liked is that they were both over 40 and that the bossy guy was the smaller man, and the submissive was the 6’4” drag queen.
Warning: Stay away from the audiobook!!!! The voice Michael Pauley choose for Larry, the Queen, was creepy, raspy, growly and just WRONG! I had to finish reading this one and will return my unfinished audiobook!
So Funny! If I wasn't laughing out loud I was smiling. Susan Hawke does an amazing job with this shortie, and you don't have to read any of the other books in the series to enjoy it.
Short, sweet, funny, with a touch of Domination. I love drag queens and Miss Honey was definitely OTT. In fact, I found her a bit too abrasive, but then again, I did not read book one and many readers seem to have first met her there and then went right into this book. Maybe if I did I'd like her a bit more.
But all in all, it gave me a few hours entertainment and planted the seed of curiosity to go deeper into the series. Maybe book one is indeed in my future.
Oh, I'm so happy that Honey/Larry finally found someone to appreciate them. Godrick seemed a bit stuck-up but this plays well into his dominant personality. Honey just eats that right up.
I’ve read this author before. This is a mm contemporary novella about Larry a drag queen named Honey and Godric a Dom in retirement. They meets as teacher and principal at a school. This is the first book I have read with a drag queen. I’ll read more from this author.
How can it be over already??? Noo!!!! I thought it was going to be longer. It was so funny and sexy and left my heart all warm and fuzzy! I want more!!!
I snorted, laughed, cackled, etc. my way through this little story. I just adore Larry/Miss Honey Combover. Full of sarcasm, smart ass and wit, as both Larry and Honey, Larry definitely keeps you on your toes. And let us not forget his snake getting free all the time lol! Larry and Godric have been at each other's throats, more or less, for the past two years. And he was working Larry's nerves again about this glee club stuff. His kids have worked hard for this contest and he wants them to get what they worked for. While Godric is talking, Larry is fantasizing. And about Godric! But Godric isn't really upset about the kids performing or going on the trip. It was the request he added and that he wanted to lead as his drag queen, Miss Honey Combover. Knowing Honey often wore risque clothing and often having her ‘snake’ coming untucked, Godric didn't think that would be a thing for kids and parents to see. But Larry planned to dress more appropriately and invited Godric to see him perform to prove it. Godric shows up and realized as Honey was performing and the snake came loose again, that Larry/Honey was his and no one was seeing that snake again. I have loved Larry from the beginning. And knowing how untactful he can be, it came as no surprise that he and the stuffy principal butted heads. And it was comical. Larry, we all know, doesn't hold back and let's it fly. (Literally lol). But what made this even better, is beneath that boisterous personality, lies a soft, sweet hulk of a man. And Godric saw it. It made it comical, too, seeing these two realize that they really were attracted to each other and how much so. Godric might be a stuffed shirt but Larry's personality broke Godric out of his shell. And Godric was the 'firm hand’ Larry needed to feel special. Godric doted on him, called him pretty, and made Larry feel even taller than his 6’4. A match made in heaven. This series is just great. I'm loving every minute of it. The characters are so different and have such basic but complex personalities. And I was happy to see two certain some bodies who will hopefully be getting their full story.
After reading book 1 i couldn't wait to see what we had in store for Mama Honey. This was a funny quick read and can't wait to see more of them as the series continues
Very cute and fun story of Larry finding love. This was short, but it was definitely worth the read. We see him in all of the other books in the series, so it was fun to see how he met and won over Godric. I listened to this as an audiobook, and Michael Pauley was once again brilliant.
NOTE: This book was provided by the author for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews.
Number two of the ‘Lovestrong’ bundle can be summed up in one word, or rather three: far too short. I know why I’m not really keen on novellas—a hybrid literary form somewhere between a short story and a full-fledged novel—because it hardly ever has the breathlessness and inner suspense of the former nor the character and plot development of the latter. To me they often feel like an indolent afterthought, and in a series, I’ve already noticed that this form is used either as a sort of go-between to ease the transition between two novels or as a a short epilog.
In this case, the author chose the go-between option. The book tells the story of drag diva Honey Combover. Those who have read book number one of this series (or my review thereof) may remember that one of the main characters’ drag mother was said Honey Combover, a rather hairy, middle-aged (?) Glam Queen nigh famous for her impressive male endowment, which resists even the strongest of tapes when she’s performing (hence this book’s title). Therefore countless people know Honey’s mouth-watering private member, endearingly called “the snake” by those who have seen it. In civilian live, Honey goes by the name of Larry Perretti and works as a music teacher in a local private school, Grace Academy, well known for its inclusive policy and no-nonsense principal, Godric Sheppard.
The book jumps in medias res: Larry and Godric are politely disagreeing whether the scholl’s Glee Club performance of Lady Gaga’s Born This Way might be introduced by the Honey-persona instead of Larry. Godric refuses the proposal as word of Honey’s independent-minded “snake” has even reached his ears, and he cannot afford something like that to happen in front of school kids and their parents. So Larry invites Godric to come and see his next Honey performance. To his surprise, his uptight principal accepts… which leads to Godric witnessing an impromptu escape of Honey’s wily willy, and Honey witnessing just how much physical impact that event has on her boss… what follows is a soft Dom/sub sex scene and subsequent Happily Ever After.
I had already noticed the Honey Combover character in book number one (for the record, her delicious drag name is made even more delicious by its pronunciation, “cum-over”, *giggle*) and found her and her non-drag alter ego Larry very endearing: loyal towards their friends, murderously bitchy towards their foes (atta girl!), easy-going, and always prompt to deliver wise bits and pieces of advice. I was therefore rather excited to discover they would be one of the main characters of this book. And therefore really disappointed by the brevity of the exercise. As it stands, the story is cute, but for such a bunch of queer characters, pardon the pun, way to straight. From point A—the fight—to point B—kisses and love and cherry cakes—, there’s virtually no suspense, no twist, no turn, no development. No wonder that even the (per se sweet) love story has that artificial taste of insta-love. No wonder that the fight with which the book starts is tame and polite; the author would have needed to go into more detail in order to make it really suspenseful.
But all right, a novella is a novella is a novella. No epic breath can be expected, no sinuous way to love (in a novel, it would even be paved with loads of obstacles), it’s just a sweet little story bravely told. Well, more than bravely; Hawkes is too much of an accomplished writer to not make you enter the plot and get a strong whiff of how the characters could amaze you if only they had been allowed a full-blown novel. I really liked this novella, anyway—story well told, witty and funny dialogs—even if it didn’t succeed in making me a bigger fan of that form. It did make me gagging for number three of the series, so I guess I could say: the contract has been fulfilled.
I want to start my review by discussing Michael Pauley’s narration. When he narrated Book 1 of the Lovestrong series, he encountered Honey Combover. I admit being surprised at how deep he chose to make Honey’s voice and although I struggled with it a bit, I did eventually get used to it. I even came to kind of care about Honey so when I heard she was getting her own book, I was thrilled. Again, Michael’s portrayal was spot on and this book is well worth the listen.
In real life, Honey is Larry Perretti, a mischievous choral director who believes in advocating for his students, especially when dealing with stick-in-the-mud principal Godric Sheppard. The men have sparred on and off for almost two years, but it’s Larry’s insistence that he direct the choir as Honey Combover that has ruffled Godric. See, Honey’s wardrobe malfunctions are legendary and there is no way Godric is exposing the students and members of the community to Honey’s cobra. Big man, big… Well, you get the picture.
Believing he can perform without having a mishap, Larry invites Godric to watch the show at Saint’s Drag Night. Well, big surprise that Honey can’t stay tucked and she exposes herself to the entire bar. Most are used to the adventures, but Godric’s response is primal. He’s ready to dedicate himself to Honey and ensuring no one ever sees the large snake again.
This is a quick down’n’dirty audio that had me laughing almost the whole time. Larry’s dedication to his students was admirable and his interest in Godric was a long in time coming. That Godric realized the larger man needed to be taken in hand wasn’t a surprise but the speed of the relationship was quick. I also liked that the men didn’t necessarily fall into all the stereotypes. I enjoyed watching them find their way into the new relationship and the epilogue left me quite hopeful.
It’s hard not to say great things about this book. It’s cute, perky, funny, and heartwarming. Between Susan’s words and Michael’s narration, this is a perfect listen. There are more books in the series, so I suspect there is more of Godric and Honey to come. Thanks goodness.
I realized the reason why i didn't read the series was because of the cover threw me off. Judgemental much. I read book 4 and 5 on accident loved and went back to the series.i think God directed me to again an a different way. And i must say i love this book the most in the series. Thank you for making realize i was judging a book by its cover. Even when i was raised to respect and love things .
I remember my mother telling me about Sodom and Gomorrah. And she truly pointing out the difference she told me God loved and accepted all his children. the LGBT community based on one little scripture that people were blind. Because they forgot that even though Lot and his children were trapped in a cave thinking it was the end of the world and they were the only people left; there that there are other cities, towns, places that held LGBT people that God didn't destroy. So love is love weather comes in sex orientation are gender and our color. That is men that make the rules and change it to fit with they believed to be true. Because God said love thy neighbor as you would love yourself treat thy brother respect their parents and so on. So they're showing unconditional love towards everyone everything. And that I would be totally judgmental because some religions say black people are the devil because their skin color and that the reason why they consider them the devil is because a Cain and Abel. That only black people came from Kane he killed his brother we the black people happened to be evil But people forget when the flood came and Noah in his Ark. That God wiped out all direct descendants of Cain and started.over but we all are descendants of adam and eve . Cain and able parents. They also forget that adam and eve had other children. So what am saying is thank you for the eye opening journey. Granted i been reading slash goodness for over 20 years and I'm a heterosexual bi racial female. Which means my mom was white my daddy was black. And i love the world.
Honey Combover is larger than life, and so is the cobra between her legs. It refuses to stay where it's placed and while that has become part of her persona, it's also the reason she's in a little bit of trouble at her day job. When the school's principal refuses to let her conduct the glee club in her drag persona because of the tape trouble she can't seem to get under control, Larry offers the principal an invitation to see him perform before turning them down outright. A show and a show later, and what used to be years of bickering and complaining fast becomes the partnership Larry and Godric never saw coming.
Sexy, sweet, funny, campy, and a whole lot of entertainment, this short, lighthearted story is all that was great about the Lovestrong books. Larry is so extra both as himself and as Honey Combover but every moment felt genuine. I loved that he was both learning about himself and giving in to everything that made him feel. Godric was a bit of a surprise and I liked who he ended up being. The dynamic between the two men felt right and was just what the other needed. By seeing the good in one another they were essentially freed to be their true selves and were loved for it. I can't wait to see them together in the periphery of the rest of the series. Pretty sure I'll never get enough of Honey.
By day, Larry Perretti teaches music and organises the Glee Club at Grace Academy. By night, she wows the crowds with her gravelly tones as the fabulous Honey Combover. Honey is infamous for her wardrobe malfunctions as her tucked bits have a habit of untucking themselves during performances. School principal Godric Sheppard is unconvinced Larry should conduct a Glee Club performance in drag so he agrees to watch one of Honey’s stage performances before making a decision. It’s a night that changes their lives. I was really looking forward to Larry / Honey’s story, especially with the wonderfully gravelly tones of audio narrator Michael Dean - I’ll bet he couldn’t speak for a week afterwards! It was a lot fun but way too short (64 pg / 1.75 hrs on audio). The story occurs over a single Valentine’s Day with a tiny epilogue. There’s no real exploration of either man’s backstory or character, no obstacles to overcome, and no glimpses of them living their lives. I adored what I saw but felt disconnected by the vacuum. Larry / Honey is a great character, I hope s/he continue to appear in the series!
I steered clear of this read around that blasted ridunkulous day known for its over indulgence in chocolate, roses, all things hearts and love, and the influx of romantic books that seem to flood my kindle fire, making me want to set the dayum thing on fire 🔥🔥🔥... HOWEVER, I read it as both part of a reading challenge (in April) and well, because I adore S. Hawke stories, so it was inevitable. 💋
This is the second book in the Lovestrong 💘💪💘 Series, and it is Hi-LARRY-ous!!!! If you haven't begun this series, you are missing out! I thought the first book was funny with all the funny southern idioms and snark, but Larry and Miss Honey are an absolute riot, and Miss Honey's anaconda is a born escape artist 😂. I love the dynamic between Larry and the school's headmaster and Miss Honey and her Dom and how he makes her feel oh so "pretty."
A+ for chemistry and extra credit for hotness! Keep 'em comin' S. Hawke... You Rawk!!! 😻
I loved this!!! And I especially love the voice that Michael Pauley uses for Larry. We met Larry in book 1 and he was outrageous and hilarious and all-inclusive, and he is continuing all of the above in this book. Larry has a tendency to let it all hang out when he performs in drag. Of course, this is totally accidental. Wardrobe malfunctions all the way. Even so, the principal, tight-ass Mr. Sheppard, at the school where Larry teaches feels that this could be an issue when Larry takes his students on a road trip and wants to take them while he is in drag. This story is fun, a little bit kinky, and a quick and entertaining read. A perfect pick-me-up for a grumpy kind of day - or just because. :)
The way Andy a.k.a. Kandi and Larry a.k.a. Honey Combover call each other "honeyyy" -- three "y"s each time -- and some of their other habitual verbal expressions rendered on page were rather grating to me, but Larry (Honey) was hilarious. Godric, the principal at the school where Larry works, decides someone needs to train Honey to behave, and especially get Larry to tuck properly so there aren't regular showings of Larry's "snake" when he does a drag routine. That dynamic was also entertaining, and worked well for those two.
I found this novella quite funny. There was some cattiness from the drag queens, mostly toward each other, and some appropriation of AAVE. But Larry was a good-hearted person and I enjoyed the story.
Larry, ohhh , Honey. I’m not sure which of them I love more. Larry is completely loveable in either of his personalities. This book is perfect !! Godrick ( misunderstood) is the principal of the private school that Larry is the music maven in. He does it all for the kids and they love him. He’s had some problems with Godrick but things come to a head when a favor is needed. You will absolutely LOVE the web Susan weaves around these two. Fair warning! There is a snake sighting but the fascinating result will knock your socks off. This book is a very worthy next part to HNT BLEND. Next ones out on the 21st of Feb.

Larry was just a force of nature and I enjoyed being caught in his whirlwind. Whether he was directing the children’s choir or sashaying down the stage during drag night, Larry put his whole heart into whatever he’s doing. Godric is the perfect counterpart to Larry. Godric is steady where Larry is chaotic energy. Godric is the foundation that Larry can rely on. Plus the domination element of the relationship between Godric and Larry is hot.
Overall: 4 Stars: I loved the relationship between Larry and Godric. There was sass, humor, and hot sex – all perfect elements for a fun and sexy story. This was a great addition to the series.
This is a fun read. Larry/Honey and his school principal boss, Godric, share a fanciful night after school conflicts about Larry's drag dressing wishes for a school performance. Larry invites Godric to see his show to ease Godric's concerns. Much is eventually revealed. Snakes, feisty cats, and unruly tape come into play for this fun read. I got this book through Prolificworks and my review is totally voluntary.
Larry is a lot and watching him find his love in Godric.
I enjoyed this short story but I was a little sad that Larry didn't get some of the layers he deserved and a long book.
This one pushes into the crude in places that didn't feel great. Godric as Larry's boss and someone who didn't always like him at first needed more time to really fall fully in love.
This was way too short. Its literally just one night together and then all of a sudden love, moving in together, talk of forever. Way to quick in such a little amount of writing. There's little character development and almost no plot. They didnt really seem to have that chemistry/connection I like. It was more trying to force to polor opposites together and make it work which it didn't. 🤷♀️
If you have read the earlier books, you will remember Larry or Honey Combover and the trouble with remaining tucked. In this book, we meet Godric, the principal at the school where he worked and to prove that he can remain tucked invites him to the show. Well, it would seem that the aggravation and back and forth between these two are off the charts!
Fun, rivals to lovers mm short story about an uptight headmaster and rules bending, easy going teacher / drag queen. I enjoyed reading an mm romance with a drag queen that’s light hearted but also respectful.
The writing was a little uneven. There was a mix of American and British slang, to the point that I couldn’t tell which country it was supposed to be set in.

This story was too short for any type of development. I have listened to some shorter stories before to where there was a little bit of something, but this book didn't do it for me. Couldn't stand the narration for Larry/Honey. That alone probably ruined it for me.
Save a couple dollars and couple hours of your time.
I liked this book, however..... I was happily reading along . The book went from 1st night to happily ever after. I had to check that I didn't accidentally skip ahead. Nope they go from nice sheets to the end... I love Susan books and will read the next one but the abrupt ending left me confused...
