“Celts of the British Isles, from the earliest times to the Viking invasion”, ISBN 1 84205 356 6, is written by David Ross and was published in 2004 by Geddes & Crosset.

I’ve got this book as a present from my sister in law in 2007 when she and her husband returned from a holiday at the British Isles. I fell in love with this book directly, not only the subject and the content, but also the format of the book is just as I like it: The same size as a postcard, only a lot thicker ☺! It easily fits in your handbag or in the pocket of your jacket. The writing style is good, informative and the subjects are described in good detail.

The book describes the full story of the inhabitants of the British Isles from the first settlements (450.000 years BC) far back in the Stone Age (when the British Isles weren’t Isles at all) to the Viking invasion. As the title suggests, the Celts are the main item throughout the book. What are the origins and what was their history? As the foreword describes: In this book the author explores the early and subsequent history of the ancient peoples who were the Celts of the British Isles.

The following topics are described in detail:
• First and later beginnings.
• Neolithic farmers, Fisherman and Foresters.
• Metal users.
• Iron users, the Celts enter history.
• The Empire strikes.
• The expansion of the Gaels.
• International relations, Kings and Laws.
• The decline and the fall of the Britons.
• Before the storm.
• The art of the Island Celts.
• Postscripts on the Island Celts.
• Tribal groups in the British Isles 70-300CE. (Appendix I)
• Select Bibliography. (Appendix II).

There are no illustrations, images and/or photographs. Appendix I shows a small map of the British Isles.

“Celts of the British Isles” is a compact guide to all the subjects you want to know concerning the history of the British Isles and her inhabitants.
