Fransız tarihçi ve Türkolog, İslam ve Osmanlı tarihi uzmanı.

İstanbul kent örgütlenmesi ve yaşamı, Arap dünyası, Mısır ve Tunus gibi konularda, doğrudan Osmanlı kaynaklarını kullanarak gerçekleştirdiği çalışmalarında, siyasal-kurumsal tarihten farklı olarak toplumsal ve ekonomik tarih yaklaşımına yönelişin öncü örneklerini vermesiyle tanınır.

Ortaöğrenimini Paris'te gördükten sonra Sorbonne Üniversitesi'ni bitirdi, aynı kentteki Yaşayan Doğu Dilleri Okulu'ndan (École Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes) diploma aldı ve doktorasını gene Sorbonne'da tamamladı. 1945-47 arasında İstanbul'daki Fransız Arkeoloji Enstitüsü'nde (bugün Fransız Anadolu Araştırmaları Enstitüsü) araştırmacı, 1947-52 arasında ise Galatasaray Lisesi'nde öğretmen olarak çalıştı. Aix-Marseille Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi'nde profesör ve daha sonra ordinaryus profesör (1985) oldu.

Önde gelen Fransız Türkologlar arasında yer aldı ve Türkiye'nin, Osmanlı tarihinin ve İstanbul'un Fransa ve daha genel olarak Batı'da tanınmasına büyük katkıları oldu. Çeşitli zamanlarda Légion d'honneur nişanı, Türk Tarih Kurumu onur üyeliği, Institut de France'ta Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres üyeliği, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Liyakat Nişanı ile ödüllendirildi.

Ce livre ne traite pas seulement de l'expansion musulmane, mais de la naissance, de l'assise et de la décadence du premier âge de l'Islam, de son âge d'or. Il est bien plus détaillé et précis que le "monde musulman" de Philippe Sénac (qui lui constitue bien plutôt un ouvrage de diffusion). La partie concernant les questions et problèmes que pose l'étude de l'histoire du monde musulman est particulièrement éclairante sur les schismes. Tout en conservant la précision, la simplicité et l'esprit synthétique il permet de bien suivre, et de retenir les grandes ligne d'une civilisation fondatrice dans l'histoire de l'humanité! (je conseille quand même aux grands débutants sur la question de commencer par celui de Philippe Sénac, histoire de ne pas trop être désorienté).

i ve got this book as a gift from my dead grandpa ..i couldn't read because i was sentimental but now ..a year after his death i think i develloped some kind of a stringth to do that ...
it was good ..this book give us a look of islam in an other pov ..from anothor angle ..more of in an objective way ..
somehow i knew some things that i didnt knew before like the mo3tazilite ;khirigjite ;abasside ; omayide ; the story of the misunderstanding between othman and ali and the doing of moawoiya ..
i thank now now my granpa and may god give him haven ..i hope he rest in peace ..alah yerhmah
