[Salvagium] is a crazy ride from start to finish! Just when you think you have the book figured out, author Lanie Goodell turns around and throws another curve ball at you, time and time again. – Corie Shreiber, Amazon Review “Lanie Goodell has crafted a true masterpiece. There is mystery and intrigue, a good old-fashioned scary story, and a beautiful, bittersweet love story. Brilliant imagery and character development drive this tale from its 1st sentence.” Jen - Amazon Review Salvagium is a romantic horror novel, set in the picturesque mountains of Vermont. Summer Eastman has lost everything in her world. Her best friend, the family she chose, is murdered and she has no one to whom she can turn. Using the inheritance he left her, Summer buys an old Victorian home in Brattleboro, desperately seeking to escape the nightmare her life in New York has become. The house holds secrets, however. Secrets that can destroy Summer. With the help of the town handyman, Cullen O’Conner, Summer must figure out what’s going on in her home, before anyone else dies.
Lanie Goodell is an American author and single mother. She has recently returned to teaching as a substitute in her district with a certification in special ed. Lanie is currently studying to take the Praxis in hopes that she will one day teach at her son’s school. She is an avid flash fiction fan and loves the challenge of writing an entire story in just a few words, participating in contests to improve her skill. Many of her short pieces have been published and can be found through links on the Work by Lanie page of this site.
Though her professional history is varied, ranging from teaching to enforcement activities, Lanie channels these experiences into her writing to create a plausible experience for the reader. Her adult horror novel, found on Amazon, is the marriage of her enforcement and psychology training.
The mother of a teenage son, she enjoys spending time exploring his interests. They can often be found haunting the science museum or delving into the mechanics of how things work (especially redstone contraptions on Minecraft). Lanie loves that her son is interested in the horror genre and he has sparked much of her recent creativity. A writer himself, her son is often throwing ideas her way.
Lanie has an AAS in criminal justice technology, an AAS in psychology, an AA, and a BA in psychology. She is fascinated by the exploration of new subjects, always looking for new and intriguing information. In her free time (haha what little there is), Lanie enjoys concerts with her brother and 5K races with her son and close friends.
I'm not the strongest reviewer for this work, because while I enjoy a ghost story, I'm not much of a fan of horror. I gave this book a try because I've followed the author for a while, and I've been impressed by her creativity and her work ethic. Although initially I wasn't even remotely frightened and was more drawn along the plot by the developing love story, I definitely found the ending well-suited to the horror category. I won't say more for fear of giving away the ending, but devotees of all that goes bump in the night will love this book - and anyone who lives in a Victorian house will hate it! Hopefully in that I-hate-it-so-much-I-love-it kind of way. Don't be fooled by its charming opening: nightmares await! Recommend reading in the daylight hours...
Ambitious debut novel for this writer! Effective, scary story. Do not read when you are alone in the house! LOL! The creepy doll is not the worst of it.
I liked the author’s way of writing and describing the characters in detail. Though initially I did not feel scared but towards the end, the story was getting interesting and scarier. Summer’s character is very well written. And even Cullin’s character (The handyman/CEO of tool company) was very well described. Even Zack. Only from my point of view I felt the characters Summer and Cullin’s love angle was a bit rushed. It should have maybe started with a friendship because the character Summer in the story actually needed a good friend. Just my point of view. But I loved the story, the scary Victorian House and the creepy doll. Totally recommend the book “Salvagium”.
She went a little crazy after her best friend died. She bought a n old Victorian mansion.A maintenance man came to fix what was broken. He stayed. They didnt know what terror the house held. They were here now. The only escape is death. This book is a cross between Chucky and Amityville Horror. I reccomend it to those who like to wall on the dark side of the macabre.
This novel is hardly within my wheel house. I'm not much for suspense or horror, and honestly, it took a little while for my interest to be piqued.
Once I caught a hint of where the story was going and I felt like I connected to Summer and the other characters, I read the remainder of the book in a few short hours. This is absolute must for anyone who likes to read. And I'm still judt confused enough that I'll go back until I can piece the mystery together.
