What are you willing to sacrifice to achieve victory?

Born of a sacrifice to the gods, Princess Kautilya is the only daughter of the greatest warrior of Bharat. Will Kautilya regain the throne and have vengeance? Or is her burgeoning resistance doomed to fail?

I loved this book so much! A female lead. Indian fantasy novel. Different from the usual mythical fantasies.

I loved the world building and magic system. Overall, a very well written fantasy novel.

Quite a promising start to the series. Especially for a debut author. Solid writing plus a page turner, good combo for a fantasy novel. Great job Deepak! Keep them coming 😀

For last six months, I have been reading a lot of fantasy/mythological fiction novels, as they give me something new to ponder on. So, does this novel by Deepak Thomas. I enjoyed reading this book and felt connected and into the story after five to six chapters, thanks there are over 60 chapters to relish the overall story in good small chunks. The story is of a girl by name Kautilya - she soon becomes forlorn and lovelorn by her brothers, after the death of her father. Well, she goes on ahead, takes the challenge and sets everything back as per her will and dogma. It is nice to see a girl rising from nowhere to everywhere to reclaim what she deserves - to be a queen or say born to be king. Talking about writing and other aspects, according to me, the author did not disappointed me. Deepak writes well - hope to see his next books soon.

As expected, the book was not in the line with my predictable reading nature. I thought of predicting it from time to time, but every time I was proved wrong, right from that moment when the King went to the Himalayas to the marriage ceremony where Kautilya jumped in to save her love. It was all something different, sensory illusion to my eyes and imagination. I loved that as it kept me hooked till the last page and it ran like saga. My reading experience was amazing.
Before you get into the book, I found the cover page worth attention. It was apt with the storyline and generated interest and curiosity. The cover page gave me idea about the backdrop of the story, I mean an era where the kingdoms were ruled and destroyed by arrows, archers, spears, swords and so on. You can feel the heat in the battlefield in the later part of the book.
Chandra, the king of Bharath, did everything to have an heir but to no avail. Finally, he gets six children by sacrificing birds like falcon, eagle, and hawk – out of them five are boys – and one girl was born of parrot. The king was rather peaceful and sounded a bit insipid, opposed to his elder son Dhanush, who was relentlessly lusting after the throne. However, things go awry, and Kautilya, the beloved princess of the king, sees something that changes her life forever. She vows not only to claim back her kingdom but also to seek avenge for her father’s death. But who are the enemies…that’s real mystery that surronds this fast-paced fantasy. Read yourself to find out what happens to Kautilya and who are her enemies, hell bent to bury her alive, and more to catch up definitely in this novel.
Themes like revenge, redemption, lust, love, compassion and so on are abundant in the book and all these elements made this book a special read. People having taste like for books like Lord of the Rings and Hobbit, will surely enjoy going through the book. Sweeping magic, swaying landscapes, dark-themed places and objects and demons, are all there to entice your heart.

My Thoughts

Writing

It is extremely well written and the flow is seamless making the read unputdownable. The language is simple and the book is edited well.

Plot/Story

Well, to me it was a mix of Mahabharatha, Lord of the rings, Game of Thrones, and Alice in Wonderland with a good dose of Mythology thrown in for the effect. All the components were mixed well in a blender spewing out a story that was both ridiculous and childish.

What worked for me

The writing worked well for me. I kept going as it was extremely well written and followed all the norms of writing fiction.

The female protagonist and her lack of ambition were projected well. Also, the rebel chief being a female worked quite well in integrating the plot.

Characters were well developed and rounded.

The tiny backstories were charming. I enjoyed them more than the actual story.

What didn’t work for me

The plot didn’t work for me as all the twists were predictable. Also, you name it and you have it in the plot (bears, apes, wooden-faced Yama, Yakshinis, Demi-gods, Rakshasas et all). Quite the plate full, won’t you say?

What purpose do these characters serve? I do not know. It was a bad hotchpotch of things thrown into the plot. It felt like the author was trying very hard to either mimic the renowned writers of the genre or was trying to prove that he could write better than them. I must say, he fared poorly on both points.

And since this is the first part of the series, I hope he stops adding new characters and develops the conflict between the different groups more.

All in all an average read.

REVIEW ~ This is the first book of a planned series. The Writing style is really good and easy to read. The Characters are well drawn and amazing. There are so many characters in this book and all of them are developed perfectly. I really liked the character description of The Raptors. To be honest, I was really impressed with the powerful RAPTORS than the female Protagonist. The Plot is quite interesting as well as thrilling. Fast-paced storyline makes this even more interesting. The Action scenes are amazing. The ending is designed properly. Not a cliffhanger but still the mystery continues. Overall, an amazing fantasy with lots of amazing things, and if you want to know what are those amazing things, then you have to read this amazing book!!
Highly Recommended!!
Eagerly waiting for the next book in the series!!

In this captivating novel, the age-old question of what is mightier – ink and intellect or steel and strength – takes center stage as the protagonist, Kautilya, challenges her brother's belief in war and glory. Set in the kingdom of Bharata, ruled by the pacifist King Chandra, the narrative unfolds with twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats.

The tale begins with Chandra's quest for an heir and the unique circumstances leading to the birth of Kautilya. As family dynamics and power struggles ensue, the plot takes unexpected turns, blending love, betrayal, and revenge. Kautilya's journey from a captive seeking vengeance to a strategist empowering apes for freedom adds layers of intrigue.

The novel explores Kautilya's relationships with Jay and the demon Adi, weaving love and betrayal into the larger narrative. The story's richness lies in the detailed world-building, well-crafted characters, and Kautilya's strategic prowess.

The author, Deepak Thomas, exhibits a commendable blend of research, writing, and editing, placing this fantasy fiction among the best written by Indian authors. Overall, Thomas delivers an enthralling saga filled with adventure, suspense, and strategic brilliance that sets it apart in the realm of fantasy fiction.

World building and crafting epic characters is the author's forté! I truly loved the story and the plot twist. My favourite character was Kautilya. The author, Mr. Deepak Thomas, has carefully figured out the hidden intentions of each and every character. I honestly loved the war tactics that were discussed in the second half of the book. Excited to read the next part!!! ✨

Born to be king by deepak thomas is the 1st book in the Epic of Kautuliya series.
Kautuliya is the only daughter of king Chandra, the ruler of Bharat, she’s born with the qualities of her parrot unlike her brothers who are born with the qualities of the falcon, the eagle, etc. Life is treating them well until their family is betrayed and now its upto Kautuliya to restore the legacy of her family, but will this simple girl who has the qualities of the parrot be a do so?
Grear up for an action packed read with the perfect saga of love, trust, determination, bravery and betrayal.
This book belongs to the fantasy genre and everyone here knows how picky I am about this genre, I've read fantasy books, there are very few that I actually seem to like, but hold on because this book has my heart!

OVERVIEW/ MY OPINION:
I loved the way the story is developed right from the beginning till the end, every element of the story is answered the reader is not kept clueless while reading this book.
The concept behind it was really fresh and unique, it was amazingly executed.
I liked how the book also focuses on women's education and women's empowerment.

The writing style was excellent, It does not take time for the reader to build the fantasy world that the author has portrayed in the book before their eyes. Every scene is described very vividly I felt That I was watching a movie as I was reading this book.
The author has very well explained the birth of Kautuliya along with her brothers, this was definitely a plus point of this book.

The language though being nice, simple and unsophisticated It was really engaging.
The narration too was done quite well, It kept me gripped till the core while reading this book.

The cover and the title are appropriately chosen keeping in mind the interest and curiosity of a reader.

The storyline was beautiful and captivating. The plot was fresh and strong enough to keep me gripped. The best part about the story was when these siblings are sent to the gurukula to learn archery, sword fighting, hunting, yoga, philosophy etc. Also there's a scene on pg. 54 wherein Kautuliya defines the duties of a king by combining it with the 4 varnashrama stages, this part truly has my heart. The
2 drawbacks of the story are that when Kautuliya plans a second attack, the just explains the 1st phase of it not the remaining 2, so i really wanted to know about it.
Secondly I would have truly loved it if suddenly During the final battle somebody could have used a different astra which was never spoken about in this book, this would give it that Oh-I-Dint-expect-that-to-come kinda movement.
I loved the way the author has described the sibling relationships in this book.

Speaking about the characters, each and every character be it the apes, the rakshas, the bears, the protagonists, the demigods, the supporting characters, all were very well developed. I could connect with Kautuliya very well. Every emotion is crafted beautifully and presented perfectly.
The war scenes, the astras, the places all were described very intricately.

Overall, this was a very interesting, innovative, fantastic and a fast paced read. Definitely recommended if you want to get into reading fantasies and also if you love fantasies, you can't skip this one!

Introduction:

Leadership is not a new concept; in fact it was as prevailing then as today. Well, then kings and princes and their ministers used to be major honchos of the leadership league. And to become a great leader, one must possess some inborn qualities, teachers can dole out knowledge, warriors can make one have good fighting skills, but the most awed aspect of a true leader is to lead by example and make informed decisions on time. So far if you have been reading scores of self-help books to hone up your leadership skills, here I would like to interrupt and say that you can do that by reading this fantasy novel. ‘The Epic of Kautilya’ by Deepak Thomas is a story of a young girl named ‘Kautilya’ who proves herself that she is meant for ruling, not following. Well, her journey is not that easy, as you might guess out.

Plot summary:

The story is of the kingdom Bharat – the novel opens up with the plight of the king Chandra – he is shown kind, with optimum mercy for friends and foes, old and without a child, subsequently he is worried for an heir to his kingdom. He had the option of marrying hundreds of women for a child, but he prefers to abstain from that as he truly loved his wife, who by the stroke of bad luck dies before delivering any baby.

Often without magic and queer things fantasy novels sound immature and incongruous, now magic comes in the picture, by the help of some enigmatic rituals he manages to get six children from six different birds. Kautilya is born out of a homely parrot; however other children, all boys, are ferocious as they are born out of strong birds like falcon, eagle, hawk, etc.

Soon children are sent to an ashram/school for basic education and other skills, and when they come back to the kingdom many challenges await them, one of them was the tussle with ape species – they are struggling for their freedom from humans. However, the king Chandra is not so excited about any problem. But there is this boy – Dhanush – he is bull-headed and lusting after the throne like anything. And the countdown of the conflict of interests begins.

Next, in the groom-finding ceremony of Kautiya, the king is being brutally killed by his sons. Kautilya being the only confidante of her father watches everything in agonizing miserability. The king is deceived, so does she. Now what next? Will she revenge for the murder? The kingdom is taken by Dhanush forcibly? Will she rise up to regain her place and palace and kingdom? The rest of the narration is about her struggle…and for her help and company you will find a variety of creatures like apes, demons, animals, etc. How will Kautilya evolve as a leader – will she be able to set everything right without sacrificing much? God knows! You can only guess if you don’t pick up this book.

Writing style:

Deepak Thomas has soothing narrative skills, the way he weaved this story is worth commendable and it is full of innovative imagination. At times, the book was in need of editing, but that was not glaring.

My perception:

I personally appreciate the rise of lady power in this novel. For a fantasy point of view, this has everything in place – I mean perfect blending of elements that can sway any fantasy lover’s heart. Though predictable at some points, but overall it is a good book with good number of pages. Give it a try! The length of the book sounded perfect as fantasy novels run like a saga and they should be of optimum length.

Conclusion: If you want to read good fantasy WITHOUT the same old devas, asuras then read this. It’s proper Fantasy and not a mythological fiction and that’s the best part of it.

I’ll be honest, I’m such a big Chanakya fanboy that I saw Kautillya in the title and I purchased this book. Although it has nothing to do with actual Acharya Chanakya except for the fact that the father of Kautilya is Chandragput not Maurya and his father is Bindusar again not Maurya. But anyways let’s move ahead.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, it’s an absolute page turner. Always love small chapters.

Now before going into details here’s a disclaimer: I did not read it’s prequel The Lion of Bharat. So my reading experience will be solely based on this book. And this book was so good that just after reading 30% of this book I ordered it’s prequel and sequel on the spot.

So coming to the universe building I really liked it, it’s a bit fresh. I see a lot of potential in this universe.

Absolutely loved the Game of Thrones level twists and turns. More than that I loved the realistic fight scenes where the Protagonist DOES NOT gets strength suddenly by the power of belief. At time the Protagonist falls straight on her face while fighting which makes her journey better.

When I started reading the book I was going to complain that the universe has potential but the author is not exploring it BUT the timing of the universe expanding in the story is PERFECT !!

It’s done when it’s needed because if it had been done earlier then the first half might not be that hard hitting.

Personal favourite moments: Best use and rules of Astra, something new and very fresh. And the Asura resurrection using Animal parts.

Epic narration. Sweeping tale of a young princess who shows the toughest mettle of character to defeat everyone. This is a long story, so in short I can say that after the death of her presumed father Chandra, Kautilya (the princess, also a protagonist) struggles a lot to gain an identity, to fight off her villain brothers, and to make her place with Apes, this is surprising to know that apes are fighting for their freedom against humans and Kautilya being a human joins their camp only to seek revenge out against her five brothers who are anything but loyal holders of the kingdom Bharat. Interesting tale of fate, destiny, redemption, love, betrayals and battlefield ethics. I liked this book so much that now I have again started reading it.

According to the fantasy level, I think this novel has evrything in right amount of quantity. There are demons, ghosts, animals, dark secret and wishes and desires of human beings and others. The best climax was the entry of Jay - Kautilya's first love - in the end. Otherwise, till then I was thinking that revenge against brothers is the only thing on her mind. Likewise there are many such treacherous turns that take your imagination up and down. Written in good way, I wont be surprised if it becomes the bestseller or best fantasy fiction in India this year.

It has some really well developed characters, that you'll fall in love with. Especially with Kautilya, in how she goes from being a timid little girl to become a feisty warrior.

There are scenes in the book where you root with all your heart for the protagonist on the one hand, but you find a part of you guilty of rooting for the villain on the other.

It puts you in moral dilemmas, it makes you choose the right from wrong, but it makes you question whether the "right" is enough, given what is at stake is the love of her life, the pride of her family and the future of a nation.

There are scenes in the book that gave me goosebumps. It kept me hooked till the end. And left me wanting to know what happens next.

So overall, a good read for anyone looking for a soulful fantasy tale set in an Indian context.

I wrote a novel!

I have loved telling stories all my life. Ever since I can remember, I have drawn comic books, written short stories and even tried to write screenplays. I wrote a novel before this too. But I never had the guts to share any of it with the world.

Finally mustered the courage when the story of Kautilya occurred to me. This was the hardest yet also the most rewarding tale I have ever written. I channeled a love for mythology, fantasy, philosophy, war stories and even anime to create my labour of love.

I present to you...

THE EPIC OF KAUTILYA : BORN TO BE KING

Like most debuts, it's full of flaws. But like most debuts it's also full of heart. It is special to me and the feedback and reception meant a lot to me.

I hope you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it, but I am looking forward to your reviews: both good and bad. Happy Reading!

“Born To Be King” by Thomas Deepak

This is a truly epic and breathtaking story that involves Indian mythology, gods, magic, astras(special spells and casts used by the main characters), royal family and has so many plot twists that you won’t put the book down till the story ends!
We follow our main character named Kautilya. She’s a princess and she is the sixth child in the royal family. Her five brothers are completely different and they possess powers and skills of various mighty birds. Speaking of Kautilya, she’s called “little parrot” due to her ability to remember almost everything like a true parrot. Her incredible memory really helps her throughout the novel. Their father Chandra is a glorious king who has won many battles and has defeated hundreds of enemies and is considered to be the greatest king in all Three Worlds. Everything goes well in the royal family until one day, when the king is betrayed and everything actually goes wrong. From this day on Kautilya will not be herself again and she is going to go through loads of obstacles and hardships.
This novel impressed me a lot, as while reading, one can spot so many different creatures from Indian tales and mythology. As I know very little about Indian mythology I was completely excited and tried to catch every word and every single idea, when reading this book. You meet so many characters in the narrative, for example, demons, intelligent apes(these are also the main characters in the novel who play crucial role in the story), humans, bears etc.
I absolutely enjoy the main ideas described in the book:
One cannot be born king, but he or she can become one through hard work, intelligence and wisdom.
Every action has its consequences so, think before they act.
Listening to your heart is important, as even the closest and most important people in your live can behave wrong. So, follow your heart and listen to yourself.
Sometimes, people who seem too weak, calm and shy can surprise you and become a true warrior.

The novel actually teaches us what it means to be a true leader, how to persuade people in following you no matter what. The main character shows us that only we can create or change our destiny. Do not rely on higher forces. People are ruled not by fear but by respect and trust. Crave for power can actually burn people from the inside and make them monsters who are not able to analyze their actions.

The saddest and the most frightening idea expressed in this narrative was genocide. A true ruler do not extinct other people and nations to become prosperous and more powerful. A true ruler is doing his or her best to maintain peace and order so that the nation could develop and flourish.

While reading I came across some really violent and tense scenes that made me cry and I felt a bit uncomfortable, so although it’s a fantasy novel, based on Indian history, and it might be really interesting for kids, I won’t recommend children under twelve reading it.

To summarize, I should say that although this book is 359 pages long it’s really a quick and enjoyable read. I actually managed to read it in 3 days!

“Born To Be King” is now available on Amazon. Don’t miss your chance to read it!

The start was promising and kept me hooked. Plot twists were written very well, I did not see them coming and I just loved the whole setting and descriptions of places and incorporation of mythology into it.
Although what irked me the most was anglicization of prominent gods/mythological figures. I mean if Rick Riordan can use the actual names of greek/roman gods and readers still love his worldbuilding, the names of Indian gods need not have been reduced to just their titles when the book is driving such heavy inspiration from the puranic stories.
Kautilya really kept be intrested in the beginning but as the story went on, she became the annoying know it all. I sympathised with her at first but she was so damn selfish. I love morally grey characters and ambitious mcs but Kautilya simply had zero redeeming qualities. She backstabbed her friends when it was convinient for her. Don't even get me started on the homewreking subplot. I can handle annoying mcs, badly translated mythological charachters and even one dimentioned side charachters but I draw the line at cheating and boyfriend stealing.
Among other things Kautilya spent her entire childhood with her brothers but there was barely one dialogue with them except dhanush. Their charachters and relationships were super underdeveloped and had a lot of potential if they'd been developed well.
Overall I really wanted this book to be good. I love mythology and there is a need for more good Indian mythological fantasies, but unfortunately this one was kinda disappointing

💕Born To Be King By Deepak Thomas💕
Kautilya’s life flips upside down, however, when her family is betrayed. Now, in order to restore her father’s legacy—and claim the throne—she must organize the greatest rebellion her nation has ever seen. But the enemy is always one step ahead, willing to go to any lengths to win. And her only allies are a group of misfits, plus a paltry army hidden in the forests. .
💕The author rightly says, if you are a mythology lover along with a twist of fantasy in it then definitely you will like this one, which is very true. The blurb reveals it all, Princess Kautilya, tries to make things run okay whenn nothing agrees to stay in place. We can't call it as a retelling of any particular story or epic because it has alot of elements in it. If you love to read about creatures who look like humans but aren't then you will find peace in this one. The book has alot of twists and turns but most of them were not so twisty but reading them makes the reader feel good.
.
For me, Kautilya was a strong character and the entire book is based on her though the author focused on other side characters but accordingly there was lesser need to do so. Talking about the cover, it's beautiful, I mean it. The book has amazing pace and won't make you feel bored. It's a gripping one and definitely recommended but don't expect more depth in some characters. It was a enjoyable read and the author made me more good with his tactics.

Ridiculed and shunned for being a woman and having the qualities of a parrot, instead of a mighty eagles and hawks as her brothers had, Kautilya is the daughter of mighty Warrior king of Bharat. Her family is betrayed and to restore her father's legacy. Kautilya must organise a rebellion and join hands with a few misfits and a hidden army. But will she be able to do it ? Would her soft and non violent nature let her take her vengeance. The book covers Kautilyas life from her childhood with a backstory about her interesting birth, education and then finally into the day her family is betrayed and she suffers the biggest setback of her life. The plot is well laid out and it builds up very well with little sub plots having a good structure and element of interest as well. The language is easy to understand and read. I quite disliked the romance part and the book has a bit of repititiveness. Otherwise with a strong plot, world building, magic system, characters and writing style, the book is worth reading.

I recommend it to all.

There are very few books that I begin liking since the first page or chapter. This book has 60 chapters, and can you believe that not even for a blink I got detached from the plot and characters. And when I completed reading 50 percent, my heartbeats raced and grew so excited and I wished to read it in one go – I mean in one hour or so – as I was so excited. My heart was crying and longing for the brave girl Kautilya – my hero of the book.
Well-written and well-placed, this fantasy book is going to sure make you remember about ‘Lord of the Rings days and some other movies built on similar lines. A girl struggles to maintain her dignity while working her way to get retribution of her father’s killers. Will she succeed…may be or maybe not? I know…but you got to read it, own it. Have it before it slips from your TBR list.

It is a classic tale of princess who refuses to give up and keeps fighting with all the odds in her way.
The characters are simple to understand and the language too, there is no mixup of some animals or something in the story.
Verywell written and narrated too.
Overall, great 👍
Author deserves attention for the same!

What would I call it a fantasy or mythological fantasy!!!!

Great read with simple English writing very descriptive where you could really feel being transported to Dandaka, Rishyamukh and the battlefield.

Describing Kautilya, the female protagonist beauty with brains, how she gets transformed from a being soft and tender to a strong woman leading the battle..

I have never read books/or watched movies on Fantasy genres.. But this was a good one to start with.. It was surely a page turner.
