More than 100 Years ago, researchers demonstrated that ancient myths and pagan religions are similar throughout the world. Other researchers have known for years that ancient petroglyph images are similar throughout the world. What was not known until near the end of the twentieth century was that scientists could reproduce the petroglyph images in the plasma laboratory. The laboratory plasma that produced petroglyph images was the type of plasma that creates the Earth’s auroras. Under certain conditions, those images drawn in petroglyphs could have appeared in the auroras during ancient times. Numerous areas through the world could have seen similar images in the sky during the same time-frames. Those images combined with their motions and the actions of comets and meteors could have led to the creation of similar myths about gods in the sky. The myths led to pagan religions. No space aliens or supernatural activities were required. Information in this book includes why some pagan religions taught that Heaven was close to Earth, the gods lived at the top of an exceptionally high mountain, ladders provided a pathway between Heaven and Earth, there was a trinity of major gods, the gods had significant events occur on mountain tops, the gods created havoc on Earth, and even a possibility about why cows were often sacred. Details are also included about numerous initial surprises found by space probes and the concepts prevalent in 1950 that led to those surprises. Those concepts also hindered the recognition that there was an association between auroras, petroglyphs, and pagan religions. Anyone curious about myths, ancient religions, petroglyphs, astronomy, geology, or the interdisciplinary synthesis of those subjects will find something of interest in this book.
Jeff Ransom received a Ph.D. in Plasma Physics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1967 and is a member of the American Physical Society. In the aerospace industry, he performed research in a number of areas including radio frequency plasmas, electro-optics and reconnaissance, infrared detection, non-destructive testing methods, fiber-optic and polarized display enhancement and missile jamming techniques. Most of this work was classified, which led him to conduct private research in areas that he could discuss with people in the non-classified world. He published an article related to the plasma part of those presentations titled “Plasma Generated Craters and Spherules” in the IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science, Volume 35 Issue 4 Part 1 P828-831 07August 2007.
In this fascinating book by Jeff Ransom, the author postulates that ancient peoples all over the Earth could see things in the night sky in the auroras, meteors, and comets that led them to certain religious beliefs, as seen in there petroglyphs.
The author cites recent plasma science as a way of understanding how things could have looked different in the sky back in ancient times. The author goes on to state that this explains many commonalities in ancient religions, including gods living on a mountaintop, a three-part god, and a pathway between Earth and the heavens.
The book is full of pictures and diagrams that explain the author’s hypothesis and his further beliefs. The author cites many references and encourages the reader to dig more deeply into plasma science and other topics.
While I can't say for sure if the author is on the right track, it is a compelling synthesis that pulls together seemingly disparate concepts into a coherent whole.
I received a free review copy of this book, but this did not affect my review.
I liked this book somewhat. It was very informative, and I learned a lot of things that I didn't know. The symbols and the ancients in the first part of the book were interesting since there were so many similar drawings in different parts of the world. I also liked the latter part of the book where he talked about space and so many different planets and their moons, and the vast changes that have occurred over the years, either from natural happenings or new perceptions because of scientific advances that allow us to see a more detailed space exploration. The book is great at showing the changes from the 50's until now of the science of space and the sky and the rocks and the remnants of the ancient civilizations. I recommend this for the highly organized and informative text that it is.
I thought this book was thought provoking. It's a shame we can't see the night sky due to light pollution. I bet we'd find the sky just as absorbing as our ancestors did! It's easy to believe that so many were inspired by what they saw. It explains a great deal about our ancient symbols and how they are so similar world wide. I am sure we are still influenced by ideas from our ancestors as we are just as curious about space as they were! Great book!
I received a Kindle arc from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.
This book, although written by a scientist is still very easy to read, follow and most importantly, to understand! It looks at both the scientific side as well as the mythological side to examine and explain why certain beliefs, gods and religions were formed. This is a great book to read if you want to learn more about why other religions formed and where the mythological writings came from. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review
This well researched exploration of the perceptions of ancient peoples around the globe and how what they saw was interpreted in similar ways. Provides a lot of subject matter to examine and consider. I thought that it was well done and worthy of Charles River Editors. I requested and received a free ebook copy from Kronos Press via Book Review Buzz and NetGalley.
A wonderful look into ancient concepts that are bound to blow your mind! I loved the in-depth explanations of earth's earlier days with a broader look into auras and rituals from long ago.
Sitting next to a devout Catholic lady at a recent mini-book-fair, I saw her pick up a copy of "Auroras, Petroglyphs, and Pagans" and start glancing through it. I figured she might slam it down, but she keep reading. And when I saw her eyes light up, and a smile appear, I was surprised. I was even more surprised when she asked how much, and still more surprised when she started inserting bookmarks to be able to return to certain passages. Probably I shouldn't have been surprised. "Auroras" is such an incredibly well-researched book, anyone should appreciate it, even though the book does bring in to question certain fundamental belief systems. As other reviewers have noted, it's not only very well researched, with pages and pages of notes and a detailed bibliography, it is fascinatingly illustrated. Dr. Jeff Ransom is not only a brilliant scholar, he is a writer of great charm. Even to a reader like me, one who is not very scientifically oriented, this is a good book, an instructive book, a book to lead a non-scientist along an enjoyable path, and let him learn something new, and even to draw his own conclusions. Scientists should like the book even more. It is definitely a 5-star book. I hope millions and millions buy and read this excellent book.
