Shepard Security #2

Something Other than Pain

Rate this book
Alex Harrison has spent the first 25 years of her life trapped in a nightmare that seemed as though it would never end. Tormented by the people who should have loved and cared for her, she has only ever had herself to rely upon.
Finally a chance for escape arises, but at a heavy cost. Alex finds herself completely alone and badly injured in a terrifying new city, hiding from the monsters of her past and fighting hard to piece her shattered existence back together.
She battles on, as always, depending only on herself, until one day she meets an incredibly handsome British guy who shows her that kindness really does exist. For the first time in her life Alex isn't alone, but is it all too good to be true? Can she ever truly be happy?

Matt Simmons is still reeling from witnessing his younger sister suffer unspeakably at the hands of her evil ex-husband and he is struggling to move on from the anguish and anger it evoked in him.
A chance encounter with Alex brings a new light to his world and he finds his life turned upside down once again, but this time in a way that will change it forever, for the better.
Together, can Matt and Alex overcome the pain of their histories to have a real connection? And what will happen when Alex's past comes looking for more from her? A new hell threatens Alex's fragile state and Matt is determined to do whatever it takes to hold her together. He, along with his ex-marine mates are determined to do whatever it takes to keep her safe.

Book 2 in the Shepard Security series. Can be read as a standalone, but works better if read with book 1 - Something Other than Fear. No cliffhangers.

DNF.
I’ve been so impressed with this authors realistic representation of trauma. But this one is like someone else wrote it entirely. As an adult woman with similar medical “stuff” - chronic leg injury with a limp, and an occasional seizure- I’m really disappointed in the representation of that in this novel. When she woke from a seizure and was aware and not even kind of confused? it was like… did she even try? Seizures are super disorienting- I didn’t even know who my own mother was after one! Plus, If you have a chronic mobility injury a crutch isn’t likely unless you’re tiny Tim, and focusing on your balance… holding a guys hand? No. I was so excited when I saw the fmc had a disability and was so disappointed with the result.

And then I tried to keep reading and this doctor reprimanded her for not being able to afford her meds and said he’d get them for her if she couldn’t afford them. Mansplain how her own medicine works and then toss in a very unrealistic solution. How typical of someone who doesn’t grasp what it’s like to live with a chronic illness. I’m so disappointed that this is the way a person with a disability is represented. I hope Ms. Taylor recognizes how she’s supporting misrepresentation here and publishes a reprint that is less demeaning.

Dearest Matt Simmons meets a haunting amd fiesty girl out one night when Alex’s date leaves her with a huge bill to cover as he ditches her. She is desperatly lonely after running and starting a new life in Chicago four years ago. Matt and his family instantly loves her and start showing her how a real family should be.

Some of my favorite parts of this book was Jack and Cal. Jack was sich a huge part of Lucy’s book and to see him and Cal moving on with their relationship made me so happy.

I love all of Kerry Taylor’s books. They are heavy, but so filled with love.
Definetly give this a read, and I hope the next book comes out soon!

Kerry Taylor never writes a bad book, they are so in depth and real, dark, but real. Something other than pain is no exception it keeps you reading and wanting more. It keeps other characters involved and gives alot of background into everyone. My only complaint is I want more! Oh wait, that's not a complaint.

Tough Subject Matter

Decent story line. Kept my interest throughout book. I rated this book at 3, despite the decent story, I was thrown off by the amount of punctuation and grammatical errors. Both books 1 & 2 would have benefited from a good proof reader.

Four stars!!

I really liked this story, and the characters. Really enjoyed ow the characters were so close to each other. Also, the way Matt helped Alex with her trauma. The only thing that was missing was a it more heat.

Beautifully heartbreaking.

This story like all her other was a great and painful read. It was heartbreaking and absolutely beautiful. I love the relationships off all the characters not just the main. The friendship and love and loyalty is great.
