Five Years & One Day: A Novel

Rate this book
She finds herself hospitalized with no sensation in the lower half of her body

Ella is 26 years old when her world collapses. A traumatic car accident puts an end to the vibrant and optimistic life she lives and forces her to deal with her inability to walk or even feel the lower half of her body.

Ella finds herself confined to the spinal injury ward in a rehabilitation hospital which is turning – unwillingly, into her home. She hates the place because of what it symbolizes, how it looks and smells, but she knows she has no choice. Her long time boy-friend feels like Ella’s paralysis is his fault and cannot handle it. He asks for a break, leaving Ella not only in pain, but also feeling betrayed.

The only thing that keeps Ella going are her friends; the ones who were in her previous life and the new ones she meets at the hospital. One of the new people in her life is Ophir and the spark between them – though exciting, brings more uncertainty to her life.

Ella knows that she has to make some hard choices if she wants to continue living rather than just being alive.

Five years and one day

Is a well rounded written book. The characters have plenty of background to each one them. It's about how a woman's life changes with a traumatic car accident at the age of 26. I did enjoyed reading the book. It was a bit slow for me. But that's how most books will be. As the woman Ella goes through her shattered life. She slowly starts to pick up the pieces. But it seems everytime she finds the rainbow. Another tragedy strikes her when she needs happiness not being brought down

The blurb was something I hadn't read before so I was intrigued by it but somewhere along the way, the book was not what I expected. I couldn't connect or feel any sort of emotion for the characters.

Interesting, if a little depressing, novel. I assume it was a problem with translation into English, but the verb to lie (meaning to recline) was misused repeatedly. The novel majored more than would be likely on the sexual difficulties of being paralyzed.

First, I want to thank Michal Admoni for providing me with this book so I may bring you this review.

Five Years & One Day by Michal Admoni is an extremely powerful book on many different and will stay with your heart afterwards. In this story you will meet incredibly strong characters who have been in incredibly terribly accidents try to rebuild their lives emotionally, mentally and physically. Plus learning to cope with their romantic relationships.

Kudos to the graphic designer on this cover. The couple on the cover in their spot where they went to talk and drink coffee is so spot on. Plus, the cover is so vibrant in color!! You defiantly captured the essence of the book.

Michal Admoni did a phenomenal job pulling out all the emotions and the feelings in what Ella was going through. Nothing was as strong as the scenes with her boyfriend Amit. How their relationship was before the accident and how it progressed. There were times in the book I thought he was a coward and I wanted to smack him!! Michal did such a phenomenal job with this couple.

I became very attached to Ella! When she had a setback, I got very scared for her. When she made progress, I wanted to give her such a big hug.

Michal seemed very passionate about her characters and the subject matter she was writing about. You could tell in her beautiful writing that these characters meant something special to her. This is what makes someone a great author and story teller. It made me feel that connection with each character and have the bond in the storyline.

The author has an amazing message to her readers that I really like. We are not accountable for the cards we are dealt with, but we do get to choose how to play them and however we decide to play them, is what our lives will look like.

This book had a lot of great life lessons. Because of this I honestly think this book should be made into the movie on Hallmark or Netflix.

Don’t be afraid to realize your dreams!’

Israeli author Michal Admoni makes her writing debut with a sensitive novel that reflects her own life circumstances, and the result is a book that is not only a fine read, but also an insider’s look at the plight of disabled persons and the trials and goals of rehabilitation. Following her own rehabilitation experience Michal studied personal and medical coaching, volunteering as a lecturer on the topic of rehabilitation processes, at the Gal Loewenstein College. She currently lectures about disability and finding strength and is both a personal and group life-coach.

In what is an approximation of the author’s own life experiences and growth through those trials FIVE YEARS & ONE DAY is at once a tragedy and a romance, tied securely together as narrative about a girl whose sequelae from an auto accident leaves her without feeling and paralyzed from the waist down. How this alters her relationship with her boyfriend, who is unable to cope with her new status, and leads to the discovery of a new romance is woven into this tapestry that celebrates the importance of friends and support from others. It is an homage to rising above negative circumstances and blossoming into the possibilities that courage and optimism can bring.

Michal’s writing is lucid, cogent and above all sensitively eloquent, making an immensely entertaining novel both a joy to read and a beacon of light for those facing adverse situations. Highly recommended.

I enjoyed reading Five Years & One Day. It makes one think of what you would do if your world changed due to an accident. I liked Ophir and Ella. They were good characters. I liked her ex too but I couldn't understand the decisions he made when it came to how he dealt with the tragedy. I liked how Ophir challenged Ella and how she challenged him in her own way as well. The emotions that played across the book were real and you could feel them just like the characters were. I have not read a book by this author before but I would definitely read another one. I would recommend it to others who enjoy romances that aren't your everyday typical insta-love and all happily ever after. The struggles were real and how the characters navigated them were as well.

Author Michal Admoni

Ella and Amit are a young couple in love; until tragedy strikes and threatens to tear them apart. Ella transforms from an indepentent young lady to someone even she doesn't recognize. The old Ella is gone,  and she must find courage and strength to carry on.

Amit is unable or unwilling to handle Ella's situation well and is riddled with guilt.

At times, the book lost me Ella kept going back and forth on what she wanted versus what she needed, also I felt parts of the book didn't translate very well. Overall this had the bones of a good story but was a very slow read.

Hope and love

I enjoyed this story very much. The editing needs some work though. I hate when words are left out of the grammar issues are glaring. I spent a year with my daughter in rehab as an inpatient and outpatient as she suffered a traumatic brain injury when, as a 12 year old, she was hit by a car. Fortunately she was a success story and is now 38. She does have some residual issues but is married and lives a normal life coping with those issues well. My child's accident is what led me to read this book and I am glad I did!

Beautiful,moving,inspiring and emotional rollacoaster

I didn't expect for a minute that this book was going to almost echo my own rollercoaster that started 13 years ago . I never read the synopsis just dived into the book, and cried ,sweated struggled and smiled through out the story.I will pass it on to family and loved ones to help them see inside my story .it's beautifully written and impotence to look at travelling to Israel to taste it's food, see it's countryside and feel the flavour of the air .again beautiful and inspiring

Interesting

Having been in a rehab ward after a fall, I could somewhat identify with the characters. There were a few parts of the story that I felt got bogged down. I don't understand WHY there were so many typos ! Whomever the proof reader was did a poor job. If I had been reading a printed book and not been on my Kindle, I would have circled all the mistake and sent them to you.😀

This story was very emotional and quite educational as well. It was a slow progression and it seemed to work quite well for this story. There is a lot that has to be worked through and finding the new you after a tragic accident is never an easy thing. This was a good read, although at times it seemed the translation may have been a little off, but overall it was a great story!

This is my first book by Michal Admoni, and definitely not my last. In this soul gripping book where it takes you down the road with a woman who lost the feeling in her lower half after an accident. This book will not leave you hanging and you will be so captivated by the words that you will totally fly through this book hanging onto every single word.

This is just so heart-wrenching. Very emotional, Ella's experience is traumatic but she's a fighter. I just wish the plot had advanced with more happy moments as she ventured forth in her new self, which I guess makes this more realistic though. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation from the author.

Lovely insight into life after a major injury and how things change but also all is not lost, you can rebuild yourself with enough courage and support and you will find love in the midst of it all. Beautifully written and engaging, will happily read others by this author.
