Piper once believed she'd found her happily ever after in Estella.
Until Estella left.
Piper and Estella met when they were kids. Estella was rich and spoiled, Piper was poor and curious, and—in each other—the two girls found an unexpected friendship. Year after year went by as they grew up together, growing closer and closer as time passed, until Piper realized that she loved Estella more than anything in the universe.
The day Piper told Estella she loved her was the day Estella walked out the door, never to return again...
Or so Piper thought.
Years have passed, and they're both grown women living opposite lives on opposite sides of the country. All they have between them are the memories of a young love that was so beautiful and profound that it changed their lives forever...
But a chance encounter pulls the two women together once more.
Does true love exist? Or are some scars too deep to ever heal?
Essex’s books are always a little on the light side. More times than not, though, I find her books a light, frothy feels good read that leaves my heart happy enough.
Unfortunately, this is not one of her best and in this instance light slides into shallow and two dimensional. Sloppily crafted, lots of typos and plot holes and just generally unsatisfying.
Overall: hard to recommend this one, even to kindle unlimiters. Those who have not read Essex before should start with something else as, I’m sorry to say, she’s capable of much better than this
What a sad sad story. It started well with good potential but after a while it got so depressing i couldn't wait for the ending. This one didn't do it for me. :/
This book is different than the authors other books. I found it a nice change. I loved the way the book jumped from past to present. The author showed how true love never dies.
I was so looking forward to a new Book by Bridget as it’s been a while,I’m sorry to say I wasn’t impressed which is so unusual for me as love her work.I soon realised about 3 pages in that it’s basically Great Expectations which is not a particular favourite Dickens of mine. Some May like it but although I tried very hard it just wasn’t for me.SORRY!
I have follow this writer for a while now, read some of her books, like them but never to the point to writter a review, but with this book, wow what can I say. I love it, it's so beautiful this book. It has magic without magic. The way she wrote the past and present was amazing it done, the end well beautiful, make me cry 😢 a bit there but in a good way. In all just gonna say thank you miss bridget for an amazing book. Keep in the good work!! 😊
Bridget Essex steps outside her normal paranormal vein to pen this heartwrenching tale of a broken heart and how it affects a second generation. As always, the characters draw you into their lives, revealing their pain and anguish of a denied love. And there is enough drama, mystery, and hope to keep the story flowing and the reader engaged. Put this book on your must read list.
I enjoyed this book. I have read others by this author as well. It was beautiful telling of how the universe goes to work on our behalf to bring us the love we deserve, if we allow it. It also shows how one good turn deserves another. By Piper performing a miracle for someone in need, it set its course in the universe for Piper’s life to be forever changed and for good fortunes to fall upon her head always. She got more…she got what we all search for and it happened to her when she was still a child. And she recognized it right then and she held onto it and nurtured it ALWAYS. She knew she was different and knew this was RARE what she happened upon. Not knowing that the universe used to her tie together the lives of four people.
There were times when it was just too slow, but it had to be told. There are two times line per se when reading…past and present (often). All in all a good book with a good story.
Great Expectations reimagined. Piper's love for Estella knows no bounds and I didn't get to experience Estella for herself. Piper did all the sharing. I was confused because the years since the emotional reveal on Piper's birthday was never alluded to. So how long had they been apart? I can't share anymore without spoiling the book for other readers. I wanted to read less about Piper's undying love (it was all she thought about) for Estella and more about what was Estella doing with her life? Where'd she come from? Because it wasn't evident in the story. Magwich was a good surprise and Miss Visham was how old? It was an interesting read but left me wanting for more.
I was very surprised how much I enjoyed this book. I’ve read another of her novels, not realizing it was the same author.
The tone is mysterious, magical, and romantic. The main character has a hard life, but meets a girl and together they have this tension and love. It was written mostly in the context of the main character, but switched a few times to give more overall understanding of the story/setting.
I enjoyed the pace, the mystery, I was constantly trying to figure out what was going on, and on some occasions I was spot on with my hypothesis.
I recommend this book, I couldn’t put it down. I want more novels like this!
This is such a beautiful story and so well written that I felt as if I was living the tale myself. Love and loss can break your heart. The characters in this book have lived a lifetime of grief. The only perfect moments they had were those with the women they loved. But now those moments are gone forever and the memory is too painful to bear. Can anything pull them out of the empty existence they have? If only they could get another chance to be with the love they lost.
I completely adored reading this latest book by Bridget Essex! Such a wonderful story within a story that reads like poetry. I simply couldn’t stop and read it all today! Highly recommended!
This story is different from what I like to read. It started slow and I was tempted to stop reading it. But, it held my interest until I couldn’t put it down. It is a very nice love story that had some nice love scenes and a great ending.
Wow! Read this book! It's a five star for sure. I didn't want to put it down. From the first page i wanted to know what happened next. I loved how Bridget intertwined the past and present. Have you insight into what was going on and why, but with some suspense.
A lesbian version of Great Expectations -- a Dickens I don't really care for, but Bridget does some interesting things with it. I'd definitely rather reread this one than the original!
