Waking up, Kim Hajin finds himself in a familiar world but an unfamiliar body. A world he created himself and a story he wrote, yet never finished. He had become his novel’s extra, a filler character with no importance to the story. The only clue to escaping is to stay close to the main storyline. However, he soon finds out the world isn’t exactly identical to his creation.
Good world building, plot was pretty tight (hardly any dropped threads), MC was tolerable and had interesting growth, and the distinct story arcs were fun. However, there were just too many minor characters (often with similar looking names) that it was hard to keep track of everyone and their story and the major meta plot was a little disappointing (mostly I was disappointed in who the co-author ended up being).
2.5/5 stars I have complicated feelings about the novel. I loved the start of it but as it got near the end I was finding it hard to get through it. The ending was mediocre compared to the rest of the novel. I hope the manwha changes the ending to something more decent than almost everyone forgetting the mc.
This was the first novel I read translated from Korean, and helped me pass time during the pandemic. Therefore, go ahead and take my review with a grain of salt or even a truckload if you’re so inclined.
The Novel’s Extra by Ji-Gab-Song was a fun and engaging read for me at the time of reading it. The premise was novel for the time. The main character is clever and able to use his knowledge coupled with other advantages to make do for and exceed his own cons. I believe the minor characters were also done rather well. The world was fleshed out quite well. The plot seemed comprehensive and I enjoyed the ending. There could’ve been some more polishing when it comes a bit of everything, but it does not detract from the overall enjoyability of the read.
If it weren’t for the nostalgia, I’d probably give this book a 4 stars. But, it’s our experiences that make who we are today. Life is too short for regrets, so I’m going to shamelessly say that this is book that you wouldn’t want to miss reading if the premise grabs your attention.
One of the first Korean translated manhwa novels I've completed. It does have an ongoing comic serialization that is superb as well.
Like many light novel translations, there are many characters that occurs in rather choppy pacing and sentence construction, which is what's barring me from rating this any higher.
That being said, a really gripping story that follows a protagonist who makes a lot of sense to me, and the main characters all have insane development and plot twists.
Dropped. I honestly hate this one with all my might. The first 100 chapters wasn't bad, but after that was just shit. They don't have harem genre, but they have the vibes, other characters basically leeching over him, he got some girls going after him too. A lot of cowardly decision (realistic but I don't really like some realistic emotions). The MC too, he killed the brother of Nayun but didn't say the reason, just accepted the fact that the other party was on her way to kill him. I read a spoiler too about how his romantic relationship ended at the end of the story and I'm proud to say I'm disappointed, the ship didn't even have the chemistry they needed. Nayun and Yeohyun (or whatever her name is, I forget), they were way better than "Boss" for the MC, though both esp. Nayun was annoying in some part but still understandable thinking about that's just how relationship works. 4.4/10, wasting times.
Still, I understand why the author chose "Boss", I mean even if it IS for world peace, the one that Hijin killed was an important person for Nayun, it would be confusing if she just accepted him again and starts a romantic relationship.
It's very annoyingly type of webnovel if you hate harem or just generally people leeching over the MC. I thought from reading reviews in more than two website, I could at least handle it, but no. I can't handle any of those character decision anymore. I spent my whole day reading this just to get fucking disappointed, I was naive for thinking the story might get better. Safe to say, just don't read this one. Still, great effort author, some people might indeed like this, but this is definitely not that case for me.

The very first pages could have been better, but the first half of the story was great, it felt like it was written for me, it was that good, lots of fun/interesting but not to serious/dramatic adventures, comedy and even some romance, but then inevitably as the end nears things get more serious, the fun dies down and anxiety takes it's place and I would have been fine with that if the ending was good, but it wasn't, I mean it was a happy ending, I guess ? frankly it ended kinda terribly, for one why did he have to be erased from the novel world ? also the co-author made such a big deal about needing his permission to rewrite the novel he wrote but ABSOLUTELY NOONE said anything or was bothered by the fact that he was forcefully dragged into his own novel WITHOUT PERMISSION and at the end he was left with 2 choices that were both slightly better than suicide (even the MC mentions it), but then the co-author decides for some reason to give him a fraction of what he had before back to him (to make a living I guess) and with the help of that a few of his very closest friends remember him, among them Boss (Yi Byul) who he kinda gets into a relationship into, maybe ? I mean they held hands before but this time he finally kisses her, although where ? and they weren't even facing each other, it was not very strong/convincing and later they kinda live together but not as a couple since Rachel and Evandel also live with them.... and that's it... the last chapters focus way more on side-character stories, which frankly barely matter at this point. Also there are a lot of unanswered/forgotten elements, like his Synchronization with ChunDong...
Oh and also (as always) the Koreans suck at naming, in the first 5% of the story we meet at least 10 people with the family name Kim, but none of them are related to each other, and we meet a few more down the line too, there are also very similar sounding names, like Hajin and Harin, or Suho and Sukho and Yukho. Do they really not have more distinct names ? it has to be on purpose, but I don't see why.
Chapter 378 is supposedly the main ending but it's just the first ending (the Hajin x Boss ending), the side stories (which have not be translated at the time of writing) explore alternate endings with 3 of the other main romantic interests, but in a cohesive/logical way.
The 1st alternate ending is with Rachel, this supposedly happens in a dream world, this world was created when Nayun dropped the regression stone she got from conquering a tower. This was by far the worst part of the novel, Rachel is bullied/abused by like half the people around her, and the reason for it ? because she survived some unexplained explosion when she was very young like 5-8, they blame her because she ran away from her lessons and she wasn't supposed to be there, but because she was there Lancaster (who was her guardian knight) chose to save her instead of his family (who was also there for unexplained reasons), so then Lancaster (and many others) in his infinite wisdom blames a 5 year old girl for his family's death and decides to make her life miserable and tries to kill her for the next 20 years, but while in that dream world he finally realizes that she wasn't to blame after all .... such a fucking moron, he's so stupid that there's no way I can take any of the stories related to him seriously.
The 2nd alternate ending is with Nayun who does eventually return to her freshman Cube days, but for unexplained reasons things have changed, most importantly there is no Baal and no Bell, so her brother doesn't need to be killed anymore and therefor they just have to wake him up. So she creates a pharmacy club and all her friends join it and with the help of those friends they look for treasures and herbs needed to make an elixir that will wake her brother up, this was mostly just a ruse to rope Hajin in so that she could get close to him, and it all works as planned.
And lastly the 3rd alternate ending is with Yoo Younha, this is the only ending that come out of nowhere, this one really is a side story, frankly it's not all that great, it's also the shortest and is kinda ruined by Nayun breaking Younha's heart by pretending to be close to Hajin as a poor excuse for a prank. Because of the crappy machine translation I didn't understand how that got resolved but it did and the story ends in them deciding to get married.
Anyway, the side stories are quite different from the main story, it feels like it was written by someone else and not just because I read most of it in very broken machine translation form, there is a lot more romance or maybe just romantic details, I mean in the main story he kissed Boss while they weren't even facing each other (they were side by side facing the door) and there were no details as to what kind of kiss it was (on the cheek? lips ? with tongue ?) but all the side stories have way more detail than that, the last one even includes plans for a wedding and Nayuns hints heavily at having sex, so the Boss story pales compared to the others and that makes the main story ending also pale/weak.
Anyway, I still think it's worth reading but do yourself a favor and only read it once all of it has been translated. (I mistakenly thought it was but only the main story was)

i can’t even express how good this is. most well written example i’ve seen of a main character being strong by outsmarting his enemies, not just by pure strength.
P.S. not a fan of the manga. just read the light novel, the difference is night and day.

[Review for webtoon, not novel]. Maybe 3.5 stars? I can't decide. This was chugging along nicely with good character development for the MC and the supporting cast, but I started getting bogged down by the 80-100 chapter mark. There's too many sequential plot arcs and not enough overarching story to tie them all together.
In general, the story is well-balanced and the plot is paced well with good emotional hooks between the different events and characters. The central idea of the MC being the author, but now living in someone else's rewrite, keeps it fresh and stops the MC from being too OP with their omniscience. I also like what's going on with the secondary characters- the original protagonist is obviously hiding something.
I think what tipped it over into being more boring than engaging was an excessive focus on the romance subplots. Just way too many instances of teenagers crushing on each other and misunderstanding conversations to think they're into the wrong people and so on and so forth, but no one ever actually confessing to each other so that these misunderstandings can be resolved. It's especially annoying when they all have well-developed personalities outside of this one issue, but all act exactly the same when it comes to developing and pursuing feelings. Do romance if you want, but not this perpetual string along.
I'm up to date at 127 chapters, and I'm just losing interest because I can't tell where it's going and so all that's left is a half-assed harem. I'm continuing to read because there are a couple of story threads that remain interesting (what's going on with the original protagonist? that's cool; when is the MC going to kill the comatose brother? That's got me hooked...)
Overall, this is good, but not excellent. I probably would have finished it if the webtoon was complete, but it's giving me strong "I could keep going for a million years" vibes, and I'm not invested enough to keep waiting each week for the next instalment.
For the specific genre (light novel/transmigration)* it is one of the best. A fun and entertaining read.
Summary: The main character who is an author finds himself in the body of another person in another world where magic exists in modern society. He starts by attending a school for talented individuals. By talented it is not just brains or brawn, it's also how they are able to wield magic/powers.
However, it is the world that the author created, i.e. wrote. This kind of foreknowledge gives him an immense edge.
But it's not all fun and games as there are variety of nefarious foes who seek to conquer/destroy this alternate earth. As added complications: 1) he's not the main character with plot armor but rather a minor side-character; 2) there's another new and vastly more powerful author who makes changes to create a more 'interesting' = 'deadly' setting. Allies are fewer, foes are stronger, and it is really difficult to survive when you are basically an extra in a world like an action movie. ======= *If you have not experienced this kind of story, it is one of the styles of wish-fulfillment/second chances/main character ends up in the body of another in a different world. Could be a world with magic, super science, etc. Typically the main character has some kind of edge, either foreknowledge or a helpful quirk/cheat (a.k.a. System).
One major issue with these type of stories is many authors just can't stop (there are some with 10,000+ chapters). This is one of the few that doesn't fall into that pit.
From the anime themes to the artificial suspense I hate every trope heavily utilized in this novel... but somehow I actually really liked reading this.
I expected to drop this after a few chapters but something about this made it really compelling. The first 2/3rds to 3/4ths were the best to me. The later parts were far too serious/suspenseful (for lack of a better word) and so the tropes grew to be more insufferable.
One of the biggest reasons this book was tolerable is because the protagonist (and most other characters) are generally intelligent, well defined, and competent (except when author needs more contrived suspense). Character growth and individuality are prioritized in this story. I did have to read spoilers about the faux harem just so I wouldn’t need to suffer too much though the ever growing love-nonanonacontanonactanonaliagon. I’m glad that the protagonist wasn’t completely and utterly dense in regards to romance, but rather that he wasn’t interested in dating a bunch of high schoolers he created.
One complaint is that the cheat that the protagonist uses is far too overpowered yet arbitrary. It makes the protagonist look like an idiot for not properly exploring and utilizing it. Another complaint is the ample plot holes. The author really hated resolving plot threads because that would lessen the deus ex suspenseina. By the end there were a good amount of plot holes, rushed conclusions, and abandoned plot threads.

So, so glad to finish this book. The beginning wasn't very encouraging so it took me a long time to finally read the book. Then it got really good. I can't say that all of it is positive, but it's definitely gripping. I did get very tired of how all the girls fell for Kim Hajin. Almost literally every single female got interested in him, not obviously romantically but in another book it would be. It's very eye-rolling. The only saving grace is at least he didn't take advantage of it. I'll give him a thumbs up for that.
Something else that inadvertently gave me headaches about this book has nothing to do with the content at all, but with the file type I have. For some reason it keeps crashing, especially towards the end, so here I was, trying to finish this book finally, and the freaking app crashes every other page. I can't say it doesn't give me some associated negative feelings towards the book. I'm just grateful it's over at this point.

Typical Koran web novel with elements such as isekai, status windows, superhero saving the world, MC going from weak to strong.
This is easily one of the most interesting and intriguing novels I have read, an author getting transported into his novel, the dilemma he goes over in meeting his creations, realizing what a poor job he did in making this world and characters, simply great world-building. Loved the characterization, even the supporting ones have fun or flawed unique traits, they all seem smart and do grow over time, not one-dimensional.
The MC does seem overpowering by the middle, and the quality of the book does drop by the end, too much chaos, and too many characters, still I did like the unique ending, won't call it perfect, just unconventional
I like the setup of this transmigration adventure. The creator of an unfinished webnovel ends up in his own world, a modern dungeon gate and hunter guild adventure. He is forced by a system to interact with the main characters/events and he quickly learns this is a revised version so Kim Hajin has more challenges than expected. I like the in jokes about luck, grinding, classism, and fan criticism. Then it evolves into a more traditional power fantasy. He develops a harem of ladies that adore him through misunderstandings he refuses to correct. Hajin excels at academics, videogaming, and creative thinking. Even his flaws in physicality, aloof personality, and appearance correct themselves as he grinds through levels. He always has just enough experience to spend to handle whatever is thrown at him, so the action scenes lack tension. Not idea but it was fine... And as things progress, the characterizations just fall apart making it a bit of a slog to read. Hajin will go from one moment elucidating how he doesn’t have time or energy to be invested in love affairs because he is trying to stop the worst possible outcome and the next pining after a girl who has never listened to him and knows nothing about him. He wants his powers to stay hidden and shows off as the class representative for contests. He chooses to become an assassin and then whines about killing. He never reflects on the critiques of his work or his choices even as they spiral more and more out of control. Then he abandons his goals making the pain he caused more useless. There is no logic and the world building starts to fall about. The Cube routinely has murders, abductions, and invasions by the djinn but never face sanctions, real investigations, or an outcry in the media. The righteous Suho allows bullying, stealing, and more. Groups that are worried about loyalty refuse the requests of their members. Several subplots just kind of fizzle out or get dropped. Bad guys are ignored or left alone when known and the goal post keeps changing.

One of the most gripping books I have read. This story is about an author who happens to enter the world of his own book as an "extra", he takes the body of an inconsequential character in the book.
He has an intimate relationship with each of the characters in the book, he made them and so knows them the best. He set each of the arcs and knows about the hidden settings, he knows how to best live in that world. This book does a great job of showing an author really take advantage of this knowledge.
I really enjoyed the suspense, the emotions, the fight scenes, the various abilities, in the book. I highly recommend this.
It was all great - the suspense, actions, fantasy, friendship and likeable characters. Even the antagonist can be endearing. A five star for me before it ends. So why did they end it like that. I can think of many better scenario but to stir toward the "everyone-forgets-about-you" then after a few more chapter, the end. The different type of camaraderie is one of the best thing here and yet most of them forgets Hajin. I feel bad for the lead with only some remembering him after he saved the world. He deserves better.
There are places and ideas which are for sure - 5 stars. Worlds, rules, logic behind. I loved the concept of the author drowned into the world of his own book. Not as a main hero. With a minimum set of a skills and resources. Author inside of his own novel impacts it from inside out and struggles to keep the core storyline aligned. Some ideas and thoughts helped me to reflect and update my worldview. That's a big plus for the book.
And yet... the sameness drowned my rating a bit. Especially at the end. The same patterns are applied over and over. As if in a soap opera (like Santa-Barbara, mixed with the same flavors: Internet, Science Fiction and most of all - Magic). At the end, I felt a bit sad. IF that world (storyline) was a pizza - THEN during the consumption I felt more & more, that valuable & brilliant ingredients became less & less tasteful (dominated by average (mediocre) flavors).
P.S. I found that the author is sick & it had an impact on the last chapters. Therefore, I wish an author to get well soon, get back to that world and elevate the ideas even further. Looking forward to the next episodes (chapters), adventures and side stories (of that world).
Any book that I've finished reading is a book that I've enjoyed until the end and its the same with this. First Transmigration (mc teleported into someone's else's body) story I've actually read and I wasnt disappointed. The plot was new to me then with the whole being teleported into a novel back then and it caught my interest and let me tell you that I did not regret my choice. Definitely recommended.
This book was amazing, it has a very interesting and unique idea behind the story that I love to death. I quite enjoy seeing the dynamic of an “extra” character in a story being the point of view of the audience. I would, however, LOVE to see the entire altered story-line from the original main character’s point of view. Possible future book idea, if you’re not already tired of this storyline after writing it. PLEASE keep writing because I am loving your books.
Idk why I liked this or how to explain the appeal. The characters are all intelligent and everything's just kind of mid but in a good way. The premise is pretty fire tho with the authour being sent to his own book to make in more interesting and actuall finish it. Closing thoughts: The tower Arc is real fun and "Boss" is such an independent queen from what I remember. Also no harems (fucking finally).
First web-novel I have read apart from Worm that isn't ruined by its tropes.
It starts off as generic as you can get as transported into another world with a magical high school setting but decides to drop the setting about 1/3 of the way in. While this may not be what all readers want after sinking that much time in the best part of this novel is that it drops ideas that are not working.
