Some of the phrases in the book do not offer any pinyin (pronunciation) assistance. I appreciated the bit of explanation of how to say the accents.

I thought using children's books to help learn some basic Mandarin was a good idea. It was helpful. They do give out basic phrases to use with people, so there were a ton of new words in here. The biggest thing was some of the phrases were missing their pinyin translations. I found that very annoying. Some characters I could find elsewhere and some were new.

The section on dinner, colors and animals was great. This all uses simplified characters. In school we learned characters not simplified so some things like doors and Qi, I have to re-learn.

Mandarin is overwhelming. I know a lot more than I did, but I still feel this book was way out of my league and I renewed this at the library 3 times, so I have been working with it for months. I will just keep trying to learn new characters every day. I've got counting down for the first 100. I found this to be a great tool for young or old to learn some Mandarin.
