Favorite Quotes:

“Hey, if life gives you lemons—” “Add a little tequila,”

“She’s beautiful and she’s funny but she’s fresh out of a relationship.” “How fresh?” “I’m not sure. A few months maybe.” “That’s not fresh… That’s rancid. She’s probably ready for another date.”

If he’d felt like the King of the World before, now he felt like he’d expanded his empire to include the rest of the galaxy… “I like you, Lucas Russell,” she whispered. “I like you a lot.” Forget the galaxy, he was king of the universe.

He’s gorgeous. And a natural with kids. I only have to look at him and my ovaries start to flutter.

My Review:

Lucas and Ember were the sweetest couple and easily fell into a fun, satisfying, considerate, sexy, and supportive relationship. Let Me Burn was a pleasant start to a promising new series and an enjoyable and welcome change from angsty stories with constant conflict and drama. The writing and storylines were engaging, well-paced, lively, easy to follow, and performed an excellent job of introducing the characters and establishing the foundation for subsequent installments. I am anxious to see who will be the focus of the next book as I am already curious about several of the characters.

Carrie Elks novel Let Me Burn starts with fireman Lieutenant Lucas Russel being told by the White City Fire Chief to take two months of leave after he froze up during a fire. Lieutenant
Russel is not happy about the forced vacation. Lucas grew up in Angel Sands, California and he has been too busy to renovate a beach cottage in Angel Sands that was left to him by his
grandmother four years ago. After he moves into the beach cottage, he offers his services to the captain of the small-town volunteer fire department.

The author next introduces twenty-eight-year-old Ember Kennedy on her mother’s birthday. Her dad’s gas grill won’t start which threatens to ruin the planned birthday party. Her dad had died of cancer just months before. Ember drives to the hardware store to get a new bottle of propane. A man she doesn’t know steps up to help her put the propane tank in her trunk. The man has beautiful blue eyes and sleek muscles, but she had just been dumped by her fiancé and is planning to take a long hiatus from men. She is content to be just a single first-grade teacher.

Lucas gets his first call out from the volunteer fire department and rescues a first-grader and his teacher—the boy had gotten stuck in the chimney of the large playhouse at the school and the teacher had climbed onto the roof to help him. Lucas has to help Ember get off of the roof of the playhouse.

I grew to love the two main characters, Ember and Lucas, in this romance novel, I enjoyed reading the book even though the simple plot did not have many twists, tense scenes, or surprises. It was just an easy, relaxing read.

I would recommend it to romance enthusiasts and rate it with a three and one-half stars.

5 - "As long as you’re there…" Stars!

Carrie Elks turns her imagination to the small beach town of Angel Sands with her new series, and offers up a selection of characters that I know I am going to grow to like more and more as the series progresses. Firefighter Lucas Russell and Teacher Ember Kennedy are up first, and what a great start to the series their story offered.

Too busy saving lives to think about living his…

That is until Lucas is forced to take two months leave, after a particularly gruesome call out leaves him struggling to carry out his duties and with the demands his job puts on him mentally. Returning home to Angel Sands gives him the opportunity to renovate his deceased grandmother’s home, as well as take stock of his life. And while he thought he was happy working and sleeping the time away, meeting Ember quickly makes him start to reassess his current lifestyle choices.

"I like you… I like you a lot."

Ember is also a little gun-shy when it comes to relationships as well, but there is something about Lucas that she just can’t resist. This is a couple that come together with no expectations of the other initially, but when they realize how well suited they are things start to deepen and solidify in a way that neither of them were expecting.

A nice, easy, low-drama read. Likeable characters, plenty of scope for future releases with a plethora of secondary characters as well. If you like small-town contemporary romance then Let me Burn will be right up your street.

ARC generously provided by the author, it was my pleasure as always to provide the above honest review.

I received an ARC of this book and this is my voluntarily, honest review of it.

If you’re looking for a sweet, light summer read than ‘Let me burn’ is just the book for you.

‘Let me burn’ takes place in a small beach town called Angel Sands in America. A town where both Ember and Lucas were born and grew up in. But where Lucas left their little town to be a firefighter in a big city, Ember stayed in Angel Sands and became a schoolteacher. Both may have gone to the same high school when they were younger but they never connected with each other. But now years later, that all changes when Lucas comes back to Angel Sands for a long holiday. Both aren’t looking for love or a relationship but life can be unpredictable and sometimes you will find love when you least expect it. But can love be enough to overcome distance and hurt from Ember’s past?

One of the things that I loved in this story was the slow pace in which Ember and Lucas’s relationship developed. They went from strangers to friends to lovers and I loved every minute of it. Lucas is really the guy that every woman dreams of. He’s a hardworking man with a good heart, intelligent, respectful and there when you need him (and he also has a great body!). I was so happy that Ember met him, because he was just the guy that she needed even if she didn’t know it. Ember was also a great character, she’s an intelligent, strong woman with a big heart. Lucas and Ember were just perfect for each other. And then you have the second characters, Lucas and Ember’s best friends, they were also very likeable characters and great friends. I really hope that they get their own story too. I would love that very much.

‘Let me burn’ is a light, easy to read romance book about loss, friendship and love. It’s perfect to read in the summer during your holiday or in the winter time when you want to dream about warm places.

This made for a super light and fluffy read - perfect for the commute to and from work. This read has no real angst or drama.

Firefighter Lucas Russell lives for his job, but he’s burning out and so is ordered to take some extended leave to deal with an incident which has left its mark on him. Lucas decides to go and fix up the cottage his grandparents left to him, and it’s in the small town the cottage is found that he crosses paths with sweet school teacher Ember Kennedy. After Lucas saves her from one awkward situation too many, she can't stop thinking about him, and for his part, Lucas finds himself drawn to Ember in a way he wasn’t expecting.

I did feel Ember’s ex was let off lightly,

I had the pleasure of proofreading this book and as ever, I was blown away by Carries ability to weave a tale that is the perfect mixture of romance, humour, and that hint of angst we all love.

As ever, she drew me into the lives of her characters and they became like friends. I wanted to hang out at the beach with Ember and her friends, or to go surfing with Lucas and his. Elks' characters always feel so real and relateable. She makes the reader want to be in her books, even as an extra.

I can only hope for more of this series soon, because I need to go back to Angel Sands.

Who isn’t looking for love?

If your looking for a loving light summer read stop by!

Firefighter & Schoolteacher

Grew up in the same town but never connected when they were young. Very busy in their careers, meet when they aren’t looking but it’s exactly what they need.

It’s a stranger to lover’s story, but friends all the way.
A reading about friendship and love.

Enjoyable, characters very relatable in a warm place like Angel Sands.

Is it summer already?

A great story of finding love when you least expect it, of realizing it's okay to change your dreams, because sometimes those changes are exactly what brings you happiness. Written, as always, with a beautiful hand, carefully crafted words, and a lovely storyline that draws you in.

I love Carrie Elks’ Heartbreak Brothers series so I decided to give another one of her series a try.

The story begins with Lucas Russell being forced into a two-month vacation in order to relax his mind due to some trauma he experienced as a firefighter. He returns to his small hometown and he decides to take on multiple projects (some voluntarily, others forced) until his path crosses with Ember Kennedy, a local resident that has some trauma of her own, and they instantly connect. However, Ember’s past comes back to haunt her and Lucas’ life in the big city calls for him. Will the couple be strong enough to get through it together?

I must say that Carrie Elks delivered what she promised: a lot of feels and little angst. This is definitely a different development than most contemporary romance books lately. Aside from their past traumas and, hence, insecurities, the couple doesn’t face anything major, allowing them to develop their relationship smoothly.

The two characters and their development together were wholesome. They both fit together perfectly and the easiness on how everything developed around them definitely helped with their relationship growth. Their individual character development is done in different moments but it seemed fitted.

One thing that I didn’t really like was how the side-characters (Ember’s friends and Lucas’ friends) were constantly appearing. It came to a point where they had more scenes with their own friends than together and it bothered me a little bit. I’m a sucker for well developed friendships and I love to see friendships in books but, if there is a romantic couple, I want to see them interact a little bit more than Ember and Lucas did. Almost halfway through the book, the only encounters they really had were two short ones and one that was actually worth it.

The author also gave us a lot of unnecessary information about the side-characters. I know these are linked novels and that the characters that appeared here are going to appear further down the road, but I didn’t need to know their whole story right now. I would prefer to know little and discover more once I read their specific book instead of having their story laid out in a book that isn’t theirs.

Overall, it was an average enjoyable book. I don’t know if I’m going to continue with the series because I really don’t know if I enjoyed the side characters enough.

I really enjoyed reading this book and this is the first in this series and I cant wait to start reading book #2. I love how this author written this story line and how it flowed perfectly, I loved reading it. Once I started it I couldn't put it down and this small town romance is a great read.
This is Ember and Lucas's story journey.

Ember is a teacher and a really good person, she loves her job and her small town and has great friends. Ember has been through a lot recently to especially with her ex and she is in need of a distraction and her friends try and help.
Lucas is a hot fire fighter and he first meets Ember on a call out at the school, because he is also volunteering at their fire department. His chief at White City tells him to take some leave from work after something happened on a call out and this is how he ends up at Angel Sands working on renovating the house his grandmother left to him. Once these two meet things will never be the same because the connection they have is beautiful.

I absolutely loved the characters that this author has written and as the reader I really connected with them and they were really relatable too. They connection they had the sizzle between them both was hot and I was rooting for them both. I loved all her friends to and wish I had great friends like these they were so real. This story was lovely, sweet, with little drama and I loved reading it. This author is awesome at helping the reader to visualize the place that is angel sands and the beach cafe too and I loved how she brought it to life it was awesome. This book is a nice romantic, small town romance of two people that weren't expecting anything at the moment and I recommend that everyone goes on reads it. Awesome start to the Angel Sands Series.

This was a good read. Lucas and Ember are both coping from some things in life. Both of them aren't looking for a relationship. However, fate seems to have different plans. Needless to say, they were just what each other other needed.

Let Me Burn is the first book in the all new Angel Sands Series and follows the story of Ember and Lucas. Lucas loves his job, but when a recent accident shakes him up, he’s forced to take some time out and go on a much needed vacation. The problem is, Lucas isn’t used to the slower paced small town life…The last thing that Ember is looking for is a new relationship. After her failed engagement, Ember just wants to put the past behind her and focus on her friends and her job. All was going to plan until Ember met Lucas. She can’t get him out of her head. Soon Ember will find Lucas too hard to resist. Is Ember ready to put her heart on the line and take a chance on Lucas? There’s only one way to find out….

Let Me Burn is a quick and enjoyable read. I was pulled in to Ember and Lucas’ story right from the very beginning. I loved getting to know these two. They were both pretty down to earth and just had an ease about them. I found Ember very easy to relate to. Even though she’s not looking for love, she isn’t completely closed to the idea. She’s a great friend and loves her job. And then we have Lucas who is hard working, determined and super charming. I really enjoyed the slow burn and pull of Lucas and Ember’s relationship. They kept me glued to the pages and I found myself unable to put this book down.

Overall, I think that this series is off to a really great start. The characters are a lot of fun and I really enjoyed getting to know all of them. These are definitely people I could see myself hanging out with if they existed in real life. I loved the small town feel to this story. The romance was sweet. The story had some nice humor and l loved that even though there was some drama, it was light for the most part. At the end of the day, this was a really nice read to spend my day getting lost in and I look forward to seeing where this series will go next.

I’ve not read anything by this author before. I met her at a book signing and afterwards I was very eager to read one of her books so I thought I’d give this a go.

Taking a break from his career as a fire fighter Luca finds himself in Angel Sands at his grandparents college.

Ember who although shy is strong and is trying to move on from her past.

Can two broken souls help each other find happiness? I was really rooting for these two characters. I loved them and wanted them to be happy together.

This is a really well written contemporary romance. I absolutely loved this story. I’m really hoping for more stories in Amber Sands. Can’t wait to read more from this author. I highly recommend this story. I loved it.

It’s a slow burn but it’s really quite precious. Combining several of my favorite things: a respected firefighter, a beloved elementary teacher, and a small town with all it’s quirky, nosy citizens. From their first accidental encounter, fate keeps throwing these two together in some of the unlikeliest ways, some pretty laughable ones too. I love watching lead characters overcome their emotional baggage and heal from previous relationships, and, in this story, Lucas and Ember have their work cut out for them. There were lots of swoon-worthy moments that made watching them fall in love so very enjoyable.

could have swore i had read something from Carrie before?? i gotta check my kindle ... i am not seeing any other reviews??! so strange. this is in KU ... if you have it? I think some of my most favorite books take place in small towns ...this one is a small beach - picturesque location. this read includes romance, humor and angst. well done. great read. love the cover. well written characters. I've been reading a lot of firefighter books lately ... that must be popular with the lady writers (authors, no clue how folks decide which term to use, gotta google that??!) well written. great style!! must read.

He needs a soft place to land. She's happy to take the brunt of the fall. Carrie Elks has been a favorite of mine since I stumbled upon Summer's Lease. Her stories are emotionally compelling, her characters are easy to relate to and her heart shines through with every page. Let Me Burn tugs at the heart. Ember and Lucas are two lost souls searching for a place to call home. The passion is real, the emotions are raw and the beauty runs deep.

This was a closed door / not quite fade to black romance, which means we didn’t get the full story of their emotions evolving and so them falling in love felt a bit shallow to me. It was still a cute story but I won’t be shoving this one off to my friends to also read.

I only started this series since I saw some videos luring me to read book 8 Heart and Soul. Now that I’ve gotten the first one out of the way, ima skip right to book 8 then decide if the rest are worth it.

Pov: male & female

Main characters: Lucas & Ember

Minor characters:

My thoughts:

This was a much more pg-13 story than I expected. It reminded me of a hallmark movie. There was romance, but nothing explicit. Basically all the sex happened behind closed doors. It was a little bit of a palette cleanser.

But, there wasn’t much development of the characters. I wanted more emotions from the characters. They met, they date and then they’re together. There was no real drama. No real tension. No misunderstandings.

It was also very much narrated. You didn’t feel like you were the character. You feel like you’re being told about the character. I am interested in the extended friend group though.

It made me roll my eyes that he’s a fire fighter and her name is Ember. I was waiting for someone to make a joke, or someone to connect the coincidence but it never happened. I’m glad it didn’t.

Synopsis:

Ember is the oldest of 2 daughters. She was born and raised in Angel Sands. She was engaged to Will. She was a teacher at the elementary school.

One day she had a pregnancy scare. She was happy. She told Will but he seemed scared. It ended up being a false positive. 2 days later Will left her and moved away. She was devastated.

2 months later her dad died unexpectedly and she was even more devastated.

One day she went to the store to buy a propane tank for her moms barbecue when she met Lucas. She thought he was grouchy and standoffish, but good looking.

Lucas grew up in Angel Sands but wanted more. He became a firefighter and moved away. He had relationships but his career came first.

On one call out there was a car accident. He found a baby trapped in the car. The car caught fire and he couldn’t save the baby. He was shaken up afterwards so his captain made him take a month long vacation.

He went back to Angel Sands to renovate a cottage his grandparents left him. He stopped by the local hardware store and bumped into Ember. He was attracted to her but knew he wasn’t looking for something.

His captain arranged for him to work with the local fire department. He knew it’d be too slow and he’d hate it.

He got a call for a kid stuck in the playground equipment at the local school. When he got there he saw Ember again.

They were both attracted to each other.

They both end up on a town planning committee for a town fair. They talk more and really like each other.

Her friends sign her up for a dating app. She gets a date and mentions it to Lucas. He’s jealous.

She gets stood up and is embarrassed. He knew she was out on her date and texts her to make sure she gets home ok. She tells him she was stood up so he finds her and takes her to the beach for dinner.

They talk and she tells him how Will left her. How her date probably saw her and left. He tells her she’s beautiful and they didn’t deserve her.

She thinks he might like her but isn’t sure. He knows he likes her, but that he’s no good for her.

The town has the fair and she runs a game booth. Lucas meets her friends and charms her godson. He asks her out to the carnival when her shift is over. They end up at the beach.

They talk and he explains how he became a fire fighter. How he had a long term girlfriend who left him because he wouldn’t choose her over the fire department.

He kisses her and takes her to his house. They have sex.

In the morning she assumes it was a one night stand. He asks her to stay. She tells him the town will gossip. He tells her they can keep things private, and he’s leaving town soon anyway. She says ok.

A few days later he gets a call from his chief asking him to come back to work early. He says yes, but he doesn’t want to leave Ember yet.

He knows he’s falling for her. He wonders if she’d be willing to date him long distance when he’s back at work. He decides to ask if they can be together officially.

Will’s parents throw a big town party and she takes Lucas as her date. They have a great time until Wills parents give a toast and reveal Will is engaged and having a baby.

She goes into shock and Lucas takes her home. She feels like Will left her because he didn’t want a baby with her, not that he didn’t want a baby at all. It makes her feel awful. She feels worse knowing Lucas saw everything.

Lucas gets a call from his chief asking him to come back early. There’s a big fire and they need his help. He says ok, even though he doesn’t want to leave Ember.

He leaves to fight the fire. She talks through what happened with her friends and realizes she’s in love with Lucas. She goes looking for him and finds out he already left.

He’s fighting the fire and misses Ember and Angel Sands like crazy. He realizes he wants to be with her. That he wants to build a life with her. That she’s his number one priority, not his job. He worries she might still have feelings for Will.

She finds out through his mom that they beat the fire and he’s on his way home. She meets him at the station. He’s thrilled to see her.

She takes him home and takes care of him, something he’s never had before.

She tells him she’s in love with him. He tells her he’s in love with her too. They decide to be together.

A few months later he finds out the fire chief for Angel Sands is retiring and they want him to take the job. He’ll get to move to Angel Sands permanently and revamp the fire department. He’s thrilled.

It was a nice and easy reading!
Lucas and Ember were cute! It was sweet story without drama which I enjoyed! Two people with traumas, they found each other and it was their time to find happiness!

My only issue is that it was from author’s pov which I don’t prefer usually and the sex scenes were too vanilla and without much details!

Let me burn is a sweet, friends to lovers, small town romance. It was such an easy read and would be a perfect summer read for the beach. It has just enough sizzle and a little angst to keep you reading and wanting to find out what happens next.

Lucas and Ember have both been through the mill recently, with Lucas being on forced leave which brings him to Angel Sands. I really enjoyed the friends to lovers aspect of their relationship as it wasn't hurried and didn't seem forced. I also loved the side characters in the story and I'm really hoping we hear from them soon.

Anyone in need of some escapism, needs to pick up this book and lose themselves in Angel Sands for a while.
