Can you be a fan-girl of a first-year writing textbook? I am a fan-girl, and I am not ashamed. I'm also not ashamed that I'm one of the 38 people on Goodreads BRAVE ENOUGH to admit they read this book this year. But! I'm counting it! Beacause! Teaching scary eighteen-year-olds for the first time is scary! I read this book out of fear my students would hate me, out of joy that I got into grad school, out of "HOW-DO-I-TEACH-18-YEAR-OLDS-HOW-TO-WRITE-CONFUSION," anger I still can't remember basic grammar rules, and exhaustion because hashtag the world right now. A good companion for a first-year teacher deserves to be on my "read" list on Goodreads.
I will gladly use this book in my classroom for the next two years.
~3.7~ Okay, so I actually read the 2nd edition but I couldn't really find it so I gave up and just did this one haha. For my writing class, we had to read this book and it reminded me A LOT of On Writing Well: The Classic Guide to Writing Nonfiction. Which probably made me enjoy it less. But it was funny. I feel like if you write a book like this, it needs to either be sarcastic or funny, and Jackson did a great job at making it at least a little enjoyable to read!
Anyways, it was sometimes quite a journey to actually get me to read this but I did eventually haha
I originally had to read this as a freshman in college, but recently chose to revisit it while in grad school. I'm glad I did. Jackson cleverly outlines and explains mindful ways to approach not only writing but also research in general. It is a clever and witty book and it never left me bored.
This is the first edition of a textbook I have used to teach first-year-composition. I think the later editions are better, but really every edition does a good job introducing writing and rhetoric to college freshmen.
For a book I was required to read about writing, it actually wasn't too bad. I think the author had a great balance of humor and stories to keep the reader interested while still learning the content for the class. Something that I could see myself flipping through once again for a brush up.
