An interesting random find in a second-hand bookstore. It's obviously a bit outdated now, but I still found the overview of the state of linguistics interesting.
My knowledge of the philosophy of language is quite clearly not as deep as I might like it to be. Several of the arguments were challenging to follow, not helped by the fact that the author seems to have a personal goal of making his communication as formal and closed off to the uninitiated as possible.
My second major criticism of this book is the somewhat chaotic structure of the essay. He has a lot of topics to cover, and not nearly enough pages for it all. This leads to a lot of jumping around, from one topic to another, without necessarily a good or well set up transition.
