With over a million books in print, Pamela Britton likes to call herself the best known author nobody’s ever heard of. Of course, that’s begun to change thanks to a certain licensing agreement with that little racing organization known as NASCAR.

Nowadays it’s not unusual to hear her books being discussed by the likes of Jay Leno, Keith Olbermann, or Stephen Colbert. Flip open a magazine and you might read about her, too, in Sports Illustrated, Entertainment Weekly, or Southwest Airlines’ Spirit Magazine. Channel surf and you might see her on CNN, ESPN, ABC or NBC.

But before the glitz and glamour of NASCAR, Pamela wrote books that were frequently voted the best of the best by The Detroit Free Press, Barnes & Noble (two years in a row) and RT BOOKclub Magazine. She’s won numerous writing awards, including the National Reader’s Choice Award, and a nomination for Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart and the Holt Medallion.

When not following the race circuit, Pamela writes full-time from her ranch in Northern California where she lives with her husband, daughter and, at last count, twenty-one four-legged friends.

If you'd like to chat with Pamela you can find her on her myspace where she loves to hangout with her readers.

I wanted to love this book. I do love a story where a character dies, goes to Heaven where he is told he has a mission to fulfill on Earth and gets sent back to do the job, and ends up falling in love before he is called back. I’ve read just one other novel like it and I was so blown away that I jumped at the chance to read another one. I don’t know that this is a common trope, but it is a favorite of mine.

Sadly, this one fell short and only because Lucy went from being a mischievous daredevil that was comical at first to this idiot female that made one bad decision after another. She never did anything she was told when there was a time or two that it would have behooved her to pay attention due to the risk of life and limb and not just to herself. I grew weary of her and her antics pretty quickly. I got that she was clumsy and that disaster followed wherever she went. I get that it was supposed to endear her to me and it did at first, but it wasn’t long before I labeled her as TSTL (too stupid to live),

Garrick is our deceased-hero-come-back-to-Earth. This is going to sound so mean, but I laughed at how he died. I saw it coming and I certainly didn’t wish him dead, but it was proof that pride cometh before the fall. He was sent back to help a young boy claim his lineage as an earl’s son when his wicked stepmother had cast him out as an infant and told his father he was dead.

Tom is now 12-years-old, has been living in the streets, has a Cockney accent, is crass and ill-mannered…honestly, that part of the story is lost to me. I didn’t see the point in it other than he was Garrick’s project and that Garrick was allotted only so much time to get the job done. Tom was a major player in the book, though.

Garrick has more than a platonic interest in Lucy, but every time he kisses her or touches her in a sexual manner, he loses time on earth. It added tension to the story, especially since he hadn’t been with a woman for a long time. It didn’t help his plight that Lucy was attracted to him too and was throwing herself at him all the time. I guess I was supposed to feel sorry for her when he rejected her. Whatever. He didn’t tell her what was going on, but even if he had, she probably would’ve tried to figure out a way to outsmart Arlan, Garrick’s handler, or God Himself.

There were parts of the book that were amusing. I found the talking parrot to be particularly funny, but I don’t know what happened to him. He was hanging around with a pirate and then disappeared from the story and he was Lucy’s pet.

I also didn’t feel Garrick and Lucy falling in love, which was disappointing, but I did love the ending. It saved the entire book.

This wasn't a terrible read at all. As I said, there were parts that were entertaining. I just wish Lucy hadn't been such a fool. I still liked the book. I just didn't love it.

The heroine doesn't intend to be an inconvenience, a burden or a klutz but that doesn't stop her from causing severe damage to anything and everyone around her. She just can't help this burning desire for adventure and everything she does, she does with the best intentions but without a second’s consideration for the consequences.

She is truly thee worst assignment that the hero could ever have gotten. In a bid to grant his soul admittance into heaven the hero is sent back to earth on a mission. Aid the heroine is her quest to see a bastard son restored to his rightful position and see that she is protected from harm. Easy enough. But never before has the hero encountered such a woman as this. She is sunshine and happiness, always with a smile on her face and a positive attitude. She is stunning inside and out and the hero finds himself burdened by the overwhelming desire to kiss her. Their first initial meeting sees him doing just that, giving into temptation. He's swiftly reprimanded by the angel in charge and days are taken off his deadline to see his mission complete. Knowing that regardless how tempting the heroine is, she is forbidden to him and he strives to do everything he can to keep her at a distance.

To do this, he resorts to anger and dismissal. He cuts her down every time she shows interest in him and he with every catastrophe she causes, he's there to yell at her and shame her. Crushed each and every time the hero reprimands her and worse, dismisses her feelings, the heroine finds it harder and harder to keep a smile on her face. No one feels worse or more embarrassed over her clumsiness than the heroine herself. And she knows she's plain looking and nowhere in the league to gain a man like the hero's affections but that doesn't stop her from loving him. Everything she does is in a bid to get his attention. To show him that she is not useless or just a walking disaster but a woman of worth and deserving of him. And despite all the frustrating and headache she causes, the hero can't help himself from falling deeper and deeper under her spell. Every time he causes those pretty eyes to tear up from one angry comment of another is breaks his heart. She makes him smile, she makes him laugh and she makes him love her. Yet he knows that they can never be. He's destined to die and she's destined to live. He even sells his soul to the devil to save her life, and he does so willingly. And just when the heroine imagines them together finally and happily married, the hero has to go an die. But heaven should have known by now that the heroine is not the type to lie back and accept life, no, she'll fight to the death for what she believes in and she believes in the hero.

I was so pleasantly surprised with this book. It was soooo funny! It had me laughing out loud at part and kept a smile on my face for most of the book. Of course, it broke my heart every time the joyous spark left the heroine but she was always quick to bounce back and with more force than ever. I adored her character so much. Yes, she was stubborn and reckless but never did she jump into action for any other reason than the aid of someone else. Well, she did pursue the hero quite forcefully and the struggle he went through to deny her was extremely humorous. I loved the overall story, maybe not much of a plot per say but the writing was charming and the characters were delightful. I was along for the ride and the laughter was a welcome surprise and the angst was an old friend. Well balanced book and one I thoroughly enjoyed.
