Larry and Friends is a captivating story about immigration and integration that celebrates diversity and supports tolerance. The protagonist is Larry the dog who is a juggler from Brooklyn, the friends are a diverse set of animals from different places of the world. The story tells why the characters end up relocating in New York and how they became friends with Larry.Throughout the story these animal characters emanate the most luminous light of the human spirit.More information about Larry in these Note Kid review
This was a very cool way of explaining immigration to younger kids. I like how it tells a bit about the culture the animals come from and also how they met Larry in America. Each page introduces us to a friend of Larry’s with a picture on one full page and the text on the next. The story is one that a young kid can’t read by themselves (the reading level is harder and some of the animals talk with an accent) but the story would make an awesome bedtime story or a way for parents and teachers to tell an immigration story or introduce kids to the countries represented in the book. There are footnotes on each page to explain language or phrases used on the page for the reader (for example what an African Djembe is or what “Xie xie” means in Chinese). Besides the informative and fun story, the illustrations are spectacular! *NOTE I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
"Larry and Friends is a delightful look at the cross-cultural tapestry of New York as Larry, a juggling Brooklyn canine awaits the arrival of his equally colorful international animal friends to celebrate his birthday. Although New York city is a melting pot of immigrants, it can still be difficult to feel accepted, but the whimsical story and illustrations of Larry and Friends finds joy in celebrating New York's rich cultural diversity."
Uber-gorgeous artwork in this book and some real innovations such as the use of accents to develop characters and the use of well known greetings and expressions from a range of languages (plus translations). Larry has super cool friends from everywhere and is going to have one heck of a birthday!
I was hoping to use this book with the diverse cast of characters in my Year 1/2 classroom, to help build understanding and celebrate difference, but feel this book is aimed for 10+ years. Never-the-less I am certain my young students will adore the illustrations and be curious about this book.
What a great independent publishing enterprise, also available in Spanish.
