There’s a new kid in town!

“A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great hockey player plays where the puck is going to be.”—Wayne Gretzky

More often than not children relate themselves with the characters of a good story. In such circumstances, reading fiction can help them to get inspiration from the characters. These stories often portray real life implications through anecdotes, and as such makes it easier for them to understand the complex aspects of life. Moreover, reading these stories at regular intervals can actually help them to develop a positive outlook towards life, which eventually proves beneficial for good character development.

Hockey Wars 2: The New Girl is the second and final installment in the Hockey Wars series. Authors Sam Lawrence and Ben Jackson deliver again with this early reader chapter book that both boys and girls will enjoy.

The book description gives a sneak preview: ‘The Dakota Hurricanes are back for another hockey season, and there’s someone new this year! The team has already been chosen, but a late addition could change the team dynamic and the friendships and could even ruin their entire season. Mia has arrived in the small town of Dakota, throwing the girl's hockey team into a panic. The girls don’t know anything about her—and don’t want to. But could Mia be just what the girl’s hockey team needs? The girls aren’t sure about the new girl, but the Dakota Lightning boys sure are! Will Millie lose her best friend, Cam, to Mia? Or will Millie and Cam finally take the next step in their friendship?’

If you want to find out what happens, you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself!

Authors Sam Lawrence and Ben Jackson write in a wonderful, simple and imaginative style that will guarantee the attention of young minds. If you ever wanted to bond even more with your children or grandchildren, this would be a lovely story to share with them.

It seems to me that this book was created with a lot of love and joy and it’s clear that the author really enjoys creating such wonderful stories. Thank you for sharing with us the gift that you have obviously worked so hard to refine. We’ll be looking forward to seeing what’s coming next. A well-deserved five stars from us!

Special mention also to Kyle Fleming for the wonderful illustrations.

Summary:

Mia is use to moving around since both parents work on military bases. This is the first time she will attend school off base. It was also able to join a local girl’s hockey team.

Can Mia find a way to fit in?

My thoughts:

I enjoyed book 2 as much as book 1. This was a cute middle grade about accepting new people and how to deal with insecurities at times. I liked how Mia found her footing with the team who helped her fit in at school.

I plan to continue reading this series. It’s a nice middle grade book that breaks up my reading.

Thank you @authorsbenandsam for book 2.

‘Girls, Cameron thought, everything has to be a big production.’

Australian author Ben Jackson has two homes - Tasmania, Australia (his birth place) and Ontario, Canada where he now lives with his Canadian born wife and co-author Sam Lawrence. He is a tradesman by day and a writer by night. Some of his books include HOW TO SURVIVE THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE, DIVORCE RECOVERY: GUIDE F0R PARENTS & COUPLES, LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS, BEING A MAN, and now a new children’s book series (and for adults in need of some humor!) THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME HOME, THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME TO HOCKEY, THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME TO SOCCER, THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED SANTA UP THE CHIMNEY, THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME TO THE DENTIST, THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME TO THE ZOO, IT’S NOT EASY BEING A LITTLE FART, and now with a bit of a twist toward reality HOCKEY WARS, and HOCKEY WARS 2: THE NEW GIRL – written with his wife Sam Lawrence.

Ben and Sam take on the rivalry that can occur between boys and girls when competition steps into the relationship and a newcomer increases the tension. They take us back to the small town of Dakota and write the following: ‘ Millie and the other girls from her team were sitting around with Cameron and a few of the other boys from the boys team, stretching and chatting while both teams waited for their field lacrosse game to start. It was almost the end of the field lacrosse season, and both the boys’ and girls’ teams were playing on the same field for once. Usually, they played on opposite sides of town, on different days and at different times. It was nice to be able to hang out together between games and relax. Some of the parents had brought a BBQ and food, and a tailgate party had popped up in the carpark. Soon summer would be over, and the long hot days would be gone, but it wasn’t all bad news. The end of summer meant the start of something else: hockey! Lacrosse was fun, but hockey was everyone’s favorite sport, and both the boys and girls were hoping to have an amazing season this year. The girls had a real shot at taking the championship.’ Enter the new girl Mia – and sparks of a different nature fly.

There’s the drama and the resolution is left to those fortunate enough to come across this book! The rivalry produces some fine sportsmanship and even a bit of snow. Graced with fine illustrations this is a terrific book for youngsters – and adults willing to admit they love fun books!

Aside from the entertainment and laughs the book presents, there are lessons about friendship and the shared love and pleasures of being close. Another winner for Ben and Sam!
