Do you love The Walking Dead? If you do then you will love this book. With the dead walking and feeding on the living, the living have to make a choice…. Do you try to survive or do you give up and put a bullet in your brain? Will you fight back, killing every chance you get, reverting to your core animal survival of kill or be killed, or do you just give up? This is a tale of survivors who face those choices everyday, dealing with their past and facing their future
Generally speaking, I enjoy a good zombie romp and like to fall into the blood and guts that come hand in hand with an apocalypse. Unfortunately, while there were aspects of this particular story I liked, the minimal editing (or lack of editing, I'm unsure which) took me right out of the story.
I did enjoy the setting (a group of ordinary -- and one not-so-ordinary -- people who wind up together in the wilderness and work to survive) but the amount of times these people screamed, yelled, hollered and otherwise made unnecessary noise when the zombies were attracted to noise absolutely killed me. Honestly, that they lasted as long as they did shocks me. On the other hand, I get that they were shell-shocked and panicked. I get that they made wrong choices. But, for Pete's sake, STOP THE YELLING!
I'm going to admit to liking the zombies. They were gross. I liked that there were factions of survivors who were clearly not good guys. I liked the broken society and that the survivors were forced to do unsavory things to keep themselves safe.
Again, though, the grammar and spelling errors tripped me up. The lack of contractions in dialog made me stumble.
For those that enjoy blood, guts, and violent clashes with zombies, the story is entertaining enough. In other words, if editing issues don't bother you, give it a try. If they do, you might want to steer clear.
Definitely different take on a Lompoc story. Great group of main and four legged characters. Story flowed and held interest. Looking forward to book two.
