Introduce the benefits of meditation to kids ages 7-10 with this practical and playful guide
Start your kids off on a path to self-awareness through meditation! Written in easy-to-understand language, Meditation for Kids empowers kids to start learning about and practicing meditation as a way to stay calm, focused, and confident so they can work through daily stresses and manage tough emotions.
This extensive guide features options for both seated and walking meditation practices with over a dozen illustrated, step-by-step exercises like the tightrope walker and the flamingo. A short history of meditation, fun checklists, and a troubleshooting guide for frequently asked questions--including "What happens if you fall asleep?" and "Can I meditate with my pet?"--help lay the groundwork for a daily practice of stillness and inner reflection. The book even provides playful opportunities for kids to "teach" their parents the exercises so the whole family can participate.
It's definitely a good read for mindfulness novices like me. I really enjoyed the illustrations and will certainly be a good starting point for how I intend to introduce mindfulness to my kids. When I was putting my five year old to sleep today, I told him to close his eyes and imagine an apple resting on one of the branches. He was like, "We are inside the house, I don't see any trees."
Reading this is a good start for how to introduce mediation to our lives, let alone our kids'.
I pre-read this book as an option for my 11 year old kiddo. I loved how the author supplied illustrations, simple & brief meditations, short stories related to lessons around the art of meditation, and encouraged the reader to involve their parents and families in meditation as well. However, I do think the explanations went a little too in depth to hold my busy kiddos attention. I've highlighted and practiced some of the meditations with him using the authors guides and instructions, and they are very easy to implement and my son has enjoyed them so far! So I think this is a great book for the parent to use in conjunction with their kiddo to begin the practice of meditation - unless the reader is motivated and mature enough to seek out this practice on their own.
I was so excited to win this book as a giveaway! I am a middle school teacher (and yoga instreuctor!) and was hoping to use some of these strategies with my students. This book is definitely geared towards younger, elementary aged children. The book is an amazing resource to help guide your students or children to the practice of meditation. If a child does read this book, I love how the book provides an opportunity to help the child guide his/her/their parents in the meditation. It is a great resource to have in my classroom and in my back pocket for mediation techniques geared for kids.
A well-written and illustrated book to help teach simple meditation methods. Although meant for children, the practices taught are good for us all to help with focus, calming down, and becoming more present and less "busy." Personally, I combine the meditations with Scriptural and faith applications to make them even more meaningful to me. A mature-minded child could follow the book alone, but most would probably benefit more with an adult partner or a class setting. The practices are a good alternative to drugs for panic attacks and general anxiety. Thanks to Goodreads Giveaways for my copy.
The practice of meditation can offer great benefits to children. This book gives helpful meditation exercises for kids to practice and even teach their parents! I did find certain aspects of the book to be too in-depth for the average 7-8 year old however, perhaps an older child might find the additional information interesting. The illustrations were lovely and felt very kid-friendly and approachable.
Great introduction to meditation for children or adults who just want to quickly learn the basics to get started meditating. I thought the "teach your parents to meditate" section was redundant and just explained the exercise that you just read over again, but the exercises themselves are great and would be easy for a person of any age to do.
