Home isn’t just a place…

Amish widow Ruth Mast wants nothing to do with the handsome man from her past who just returned to Cedar Grove. Ruth learned the hard way that Owen Mast’s restlessness always causes trouble. But when a little Amish girl appears on Owen’s porch, lost and afraid, Ruth has no choice but to help the man who only ever causes heartbreak…

All Owen wanted was to make amends with Ruth and her family. He never imagined that little Grace—or the strange mystery surrounding her—would bring him closer to Ruth. Or that a tender and unexpected attraction would quickly take hold of them both. But even a wandering heart can grow roots…when there is hope for love.

I was born and raised in Northcentral Kansas. I'm a farmer's daughter, but I now make my home in the city of Wichita. I'm an RN. Neonatal nursing has been the main focus of my career. What can I say? I love babies. I was invited to the highschool graduation of a baby I took care of. Talk about making me feel old!

In June of 2011 I became a widow after my husband of 36 years and 11 months died from multiple brain tumors. It was a very sad time, but thanks to the three f's, my faith, my family and my friends, life is moving forward. I have four brothers, one daughter and two grandchildren who all work at making me feel loved.

I'm the author of more than 30 books and I'm currently writing a series called The Brides of Amish Country for Love Inspired.

Second chance Amish romance with a touch of mystery! Love the way Davids spun out this tale. Lots of day-to-day sheep farm life, Amish style, including a big old bear of a dog who appoints herself guardian of all the lost lambs -- including one very traumatized human one. Little Grace steals every scene she's in -- sometimes funny, often sad and always surrounded by mystery.

Owen and Ruth have a rocky past -- one that Ruth has never let go of. Owen has always been the man she couldn't count on and, honestly, she really started to annoy me in the first third of the book. She was so mean to him! Uncharitable. Judgmental. Quick to find fault. And he just took it, as if he deserved it. Gah, I wanted to throw something but then, gradually Ruth begins to take responsibility for her thoughts and actions and she starts to change. Adversaries become friends with the potential for so much more. Such great character development and layered storytelling!

I am a huge Patricia Davids fan. I'll buy a book just because her name is on the cover (and for someone who absolutely, positively needs to read the back cover book blurb before buying a book, that's saying something.) She has a gift for creating a captivating community, intriguing characters and page-turning plots that make it hard to put her books down. I found this one especially thrilling because of the mystery sub-plot that made all the rampant emotions zinging around all the edgier.

This is the second book in The Amish of Cedar Grove but it can easily be read as a standalone. Mind you, the hero and heroine and many other characters from The Wish are woven into Owen and Ruth's story which made it all the more fun to read.

This pair have been on quite a journey and are just at the midpoint of their lives. The heartbreak and grief they have experienced in the past prevent them from easily allowing a deeper relationship to form. Ruth especially is antagonistic towards Owen in the beginning of the book, but over time and through the shared responsibility of the farm and Grace, she learns to let go of past hurts and see Owen for his good attributes. Owen's choice to spend his life pursuing his missing sister is a noble one, but also leaves him without family and not much time with friends. It was gratifying to see his devotion to Grace and his determination to prove to Ruth that he can be depended on. There is some mystery and suspense as the answers to the question of who Grace is and where she came from slowly come to light. I enjoyed the detailed information about life on the farm, raising and shearing sheep, and Amish customs.

In this second story in the Amish of Cedar Grove series by Patricia Davids, the female protagonist is another Amish widow. When Ruth Mast runs into someone from her past, her husband's cousin Owen Mast, this bring her no joy at all. However, Owen came back to Cedar Grove with purpose. He wants to set matters right with Ruth and her family. Meanwhile, one day a little Amish girl name Grace just happened to come to his doorstep. Who is this little girl and what role will she end up playing in something forever happening between Owen and Ruth?

Ruth simply has no use for Owen. They share a difficult past and she treats him with disdain. Owen handles Ruth quite well. He shows remarkable fortitude and kindness. Meanwhile, while Ruth and Owen have their interactions, there is still the mystery of little Grace.

Having read just a few of Patricia Davids' books before reading The Hope, and The Wish, the first book in this series, I easily downloaded these books without reading the blurbs. I know going in that her books will have remarkable storytelling, strong emotionalism, and the sweet satisfaction of happily ever after. I definitely got what I was looking for when I read this book. And, as soon as I finished this, I read the next book in the series, The Promise.

Many thanks to HQN Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

3.5 Stars. The Hope is book 2 of The Amish of Cedar Grove series but it is the 1st book I have read from the series. It is completely standalone so although the couple from the previous book was mentioned, it wasn't necessary to read that book first. This is the first book I have read by this author. I will read more by her. In fact, I am interested in reading the other books from this series.

I enjoyed the story overall. I liked some of the characters quite a bit. The main female character, Ruth, kind of irritated me at times though because she was pretty petty at times. Some of the reasons that I deducted from my rating were that although this is an Amish book, a lot of the dialogue and overall feel from the interactions didn't come across very Amish. Of course, some of the Pennsylvania Dutch language was used here and there and of course there were references to their god and such but it felt more contrived in that aspect. The beginning was a bit slow but it did pick up. Also, the little girl, Grace, was 3 years old. She was far too well spoken and wise beyond her years. At times, she read more like a 6 year old than a 3 year old. Her age fit more whatever the author needed from her character at the time than a steady and consistent character age. I really liked her though. She was one of the best characters in this book. I also really liked the dog.

The narration was good. I didn't have any issues with the narrator.

I recommend this book.

The Hope by Patricia Davids is the second novel in The Amish of Cedar Grove series. The Hope is a sweet story about second chances, hope, love and unexpected surprises. I thought The Hope was well-written and it moved along at a nice steady pace. There was a good flow between Owen and Ruth’s sections. I like that we get to see the situation from a woman and a man’s point-of-view. Ruth Mast is a strong woman who is a widow with two children. Her eldest, Ella has been married two months and is departing on her wedding trip. The couple will then move to Jamesport, Missouri. That leaves Ruth’s seventeen year old son, Faron at home who has wanderlust in his eyes. Owen’s stories about traveling around the country have inspired Faron to make a trip of his own, but he has yet to tell Ruth. Owen Mast became an orphan from a buggy accident as a child. Only himself and his three year old sister, Rebecca survived the accident. They were sent to live with two different relatives. Owen promised Rebecca they would get back together and he has been trying to find her since he became an adult. The Hope is a multifaceted novel. Owen finds little Grace and she clings to him. The child gives odd answers and has evidently had a rough life though it is obvious she had a loving mother. Owen and Ruth take care of Grace while the search for the child’s mother as well as answers. Grace is an endearing little girl who stole the show. I especially loved the scene with Grace and Polkadot, the sheep. It was interesting to learn about Icelandic sheep which Ruth raised on her farm (I am now going to seek out some of their wool). I was surprised that the sheep were not washed prior to shearing them. The story has romance and mystery mixed in with mending broken fences. There are wonderful messages in The Hope. The Hope can be read as a standalone if you have not had the time to read The Wish. I started The Hope and kept reading until I finished it. The ending was just delightful. My favorite line from the story is “…home is where your heart is happy.” The Hope is a captivating story that will tug at your heart.

I really got immersed in this read, how I loved being back in Cedar Grove, my second visit with these folks, and these books can be read alone.
A lost love, and moving on with your life, marrying, children, and then becoming a widow. Enter the lost love, and he is there to help, and you want nothing to do with him. Things do get interesting here with danger, arrival of a precocious three-year-old, new babies being born, and new feelings. Put all of these things together, along with a few chuckles, and you have a page turner story in your hands!
I am now hoping for more visits with these folks!

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Harlequin, and was not required to give a positive review.

Suddenly his jumbled world clicked into place and he knew exactly what he had been searching for and never found. A safe place. A home. For his body and his heart.

Owen had run away from Cedar Grove years ago. The woman he loved Ruth Mast and the memories of his family that were tragically killed. His 3 year old sister is the only one whom remained in his family and he knew that he could not have a place with Ruth until he found his sister who was taken by another family member.

Owen has come back to Cedar Grove years later to help Ruth on her sheep farm. Ruth now a widower of 4 years and two grown children of her own, is not thrilled about Owen coming back to help. Owen and her late husband Nate were family members and Owen knew that he owed it to Nate and to Ruth to come help. The emotional roller coaster of Owen and Ruth and the time spent away becomes a tough road for them to maneuver, but their faith and an abandoned 3 year old Amish girl brings them together.

In searching for the little girl's family known only as Grace; Ruth and Owen begin to see each other differently. Owen sees the sister he never found and Ruth begins to see a broken man that needs healing. Together they are determined to find Grace's mother and why did she end up in Cedar Grove. Whom was she running from that she had taught Grace about safe places. A bond starts to form between Grace, Owen and Ruth. Will it be a long lasting bond as they find out the truth.

Ruth and Owen's story is about second chances and how God works to bring healing to a broken heart.

A Special Thank you to Harlequin and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

give this book 5 stars. No reason not to.
I love this authors books and this story is no exception.
I believe people deserve 2nd chances. It's what the Lord would do.
Poor little Grace. Why is it always the children who take the brunt of most things on life? I wanted to snatch her up and take care of her myself!
Owen is a wonderful character. I enjoyed reading about him and watching him develop into the person I knew he could be.
Ruth is a cool person. I like her personality too. I really enjoyed the banter between her and Owen and Earnst. Can I have him as my uncle too?
Believe me, I really wanted to shake Ruth and Owen for not seeing what was right in front of them all along!!
Sometimes it takes a child to wake up some adults and make them see what their hearts need. After all, it's God, family and love that makes our hearts happy and makes a home! Don't wait until it's too late to enjoy it!!
This book is a quick and delightful read about two people that life has dealt them with unfair blows. But hey, who said life would be easy? The Lord said it was never meant for it to be.
I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and the messages that were inside the book. You won't want to put it down until you finish it.
If you live in Amish country please be aware of them if they are on the road. They have the right to be on it as well.
Take caution please please Too many accidents are involved with the Amish because of unconcerned or careless drivers!!
I recommend this book

The Hope is filled with adventure, mystery and romance along with finding a place to settle down. Owen Mast return to Cedar Grove was not overly welcomed by Ruth Mast when she discovered he would be assisting her on her sheep farm when her children and their uncle were traveling. The history between them had left Ruth heartbroken. The mystery surrounding the appearance of little Grace and her game of “Safe Place” gave way to many emotions. Davids research on raising sheep, sheering, and different species was a delight in the story. Learning to let go of the past and words spoken by a child gave way to a nice ending after some very tense scenes.

This is the second book in The Amish of Cedar Gove but can be read as a standalone. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

This is a must read. You will laugh and cry at the same time.

The Hope by Patricia Davids is the second novel in The Amish of Cedar Grove series, but it can be read as a standalone story. It is a sweet story about second chances, hope, love and unexpected surprises. Ruth Mast is a strong woman who is a widow with two children. Her eldest, Ella has recently married and is leaving for her honeymoon. After that they will be moving to another community. Ruth's son Faron has wanderlust in his eyes, so he leaves on a fishing trip. Owen Mast was orphaned when his parents were killed in a buggy accident. He remained in Cedar Grove with his uncle, while his sister Rebecca, only three, was sent to live with an aunt in a different community. Owen has spent all his adult life looking for his sister. The problem was that he left Ruth behind in Cedar Grove and she married his best friend. He is now back helping Ruth with the lambing while her son and his uncle are away. When they find a three year old girl, the mystery of who she is, where she came from, and where her mam is take a backseat to taking care of and falling in love with Grace.

The Hope is a multifaceted novel. There is the budding romance of Owen and Rebecca, the loss of family, taking care of Grace and looking after the sheep. It was interesting to see how the Amish deal with orphans and how the Englisch do the same. I enjoyed learning about the sheep, I had never heard of Icelandic Sheep, and how many mother's reject their lambs. The story has romance and mystery mixed in with mending broken fences. The Hope was well-written and had a nice steady pace. There was a good flow between Owen and Ruth’s sections. I like that we get to see the situation from both main character's point of view. Once I started listening to The Hope, I kept going in finished it within the day. I loved the ending, but I knew it had to work out. There is another storyline involving the mystery of Grace's mom, that took a huge twist and shows that there is no such thing as a coincidence. The Hope is a captivating story that will tug at your heart.

The narration was equally well-done. The narrator, Christina Traister, gave voice to both characters in a clear, identifiable way. I loved the voice she gave Grace. It was sweet and adorable, but her language made her seem to be much older than three. The expression, inflection and voices she used brought this book to life for me. I will look for more book narrated by this talented voice actress. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

The Hope by Patricia Davids is a sweet, heartwarming Amish novel of family, love and healing. This latest release is the second installment in The Amish of Cedar Grove series and can be read as a standalone.

Widowed Ruth Mast is dreading her daughter Ella moving away with her new husband Zack. So her greatest fear is her seventeen year old son Faron will also leave the family farm. Needless to say, she is very upset to discover Faron is planning to spend the next month away from home.  Worried about the upcoming lambing season, Ruth is less than pleased to discover her first love, Owen Mast, will be helping her during her son's absence. Owen broke her heart when he abruptly left town years earlier and she cannot trust he will not leave again.

Owen has many regrets about leaving Ruth, but he had no choice but to try to find his younger sister, Rebecca. Owen  and Rebecca lost the rest of their family in a tragic accident and they were raised separately.  He has never given up hope he will find her, but when he finally does locate Rebecca, he is disheartened by her reaction. Having recently received a rather cryptic letter from her, Owen has no choice but to leave Cedar Grove after his Uncle Ernest and Faron return home.

Ruth is determined to keep her distance from Owen. But  when they unexpectedly find themselves caring for three year old Grace, she cannot avoid spending time with him. Ruth is charmed by how tender Owen is with Grace, but she finds it difficult to trust he will keep his word.  She gradually begins to see Owen in a different light but will she find the courage to admit her unanticipated feelings for him?

The Hope is a charming second chance at love romance.  Ruth and Owen are beautifully developed, likable characters with easy to relate to flaws and strengths. Grace is a darling little girl who easily works her way into everyone's hearts.  The mystery surrounding Grace's identity is quite interesting. Although the romance between Ruth and Owen is understated, their love for one another is palpable.  Patricia Davids brings this captivating romance to a heartfelt conclusion. Old and new fans are sure to enjoy this latest addition The Amish of Cedar Grove series.

THE HOPE is a lovely women's fiction that follows Ruth and Owen, who were once courting and now have become somewhat of enemies. Ruth has been married, has grown children, and since her husband's death, now runs the sheep farm they had. She still remembers Owen, mainly because he left her without notice when they were young. Owen has a habit of disappearing.

Owen lost his parents when he was little. He and his 3-year-old sister, Rebecca, were subsequently separated when an aunt wanted to take her in but not him. He promised Rebecca that he would find her, and he has been working to do just that for all these years. He finally has found her, and now his life goals are evolving. However, his journey with his sister has not ended when a cryptic and concerning letter gets to him.

The more pressing issue is the 3-year-old little girl, Grace, who has shown up at the house where he is staying. Together with Ruth, they care for Grace and seek out her mother, who Grace says was sleeping. Considering the blizzard, they fear for the mother and start search parties, working with the Englisch law.

The strongest part of the book is the story and mystery around Grace, who certainly steals the show. The second-chance romance was OK, but I would have liked something more there. Ruth and Owen were solid as a couple, and they each have their own issues that they overcome throughout the book, which had prevented them from being together in the past. I do like that the characters (Ruth and Owen) in this book are older, which was lovely.

Overall, this is a sweet second-chance romance with a strong mystery plot. Please note that I received a review copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

The Hope by Patricia Davids will tug every heartstring! Owen Mast returns to Cedar Grove to watch over his uncle's farm. As a youth, he and Ruth had walked out together for a time. He left to search for his sister and spent the next 20-plus years going from Amish community to Amish community, always a few steps behind the aunt who took her and ran with her. Ruth married his cousin, Nathan, and never looked back. Widowed for four years now, she is skeptical that Owen's return could be a good thing. He's come back before, but he always leaves.

When a little girl appears on Owen's front porch in the middle of a snowstorm, Owen is at a loss as to how to care for her. She can only tell him her first name and refuses to divulge anything else, although she deems him "safe". He begins to realize that this little girl has led a very difficult life when, everywhere she goes she looks for a "safe place" to hide from "the bad man." Owen enlists Ruth's help with little Grace, and the girl begins to blossom under her care. Can he unravel the mystery of where she came from, and find the mother that Grace appears to have lost?

Readers of Amish fiction will enjoy The Hope. Patricia Davids is a favorite of mine and I always look for her books. The Hope is a bit longer than her usual Love Inspired titles, but the story is well done.

Another in the Amish of Cedar Grove series, in which widowed Ruth Mast is facing an empty nest after her daughter marries and her son, who will inherit her farm, wants to travel to see other parts of the world. Because of her son's leaving, she needs help with the farm, but when Owen, her late husband's first cousin and best friend, offers to help her, she's not sure that will work.

Owen and Ruth were courting years earlier, but then he left without explanation. Now his presence represents another kind of pain. But when they find a lost 3-year-old, the two work together to try to find the child's mother and to understand her inexplicable need to find a "safe place" somewhere in the house.

Things become even more complicated when the woman is found murdered and Owen is suspected of having shot her. How this will all play out becomes even more interesting as the attraction Owen and Ruth feel for each other becomes impossible to ignore in the face of a man with a gun.

I really liked Patricia Davids' new story, The Hope, about the Cedar Creek Amish in Kansas. I actually read both books in the series, this one and The Wish, in two days! I am waiting excitedly for the third. This story follows widower Ruth and wanderer Owen. The two had been sweethearts as teenagers, but Owen had left one day without saying goodbye. Since then, Ruth had a hard time trusting him, even though he was like a brother to her husband before he died. When the two are forced together by circumstance and the need of a small child, Ruth finds that he is not the man he thought she was. Can the two of them work past their differences? And who is the little girl that landed on Owen's doorstep? I would definitely recommend this story! I received a free copy of this story from NetGalley for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Ok I haven’t finished this book yet but I already hate it. These characters are Amish at all. They are not.
“She had pulled a ham from the refrigerator and began slicing it into a pan”
As a person who knows actually Amish people I can testify they can’t have refrigerators at all. It doesn’t matter what group they are from they just can’t have one. Well they can but it can’t be a working on and this one is obviously working. These people have electricity in there house that’s another thing Amish people can’t have. This book is 100% wrong in Every way.
I do understand it’s a fiction book but if your going to talk about real like groups of people at least do some actual research and know the real facts.
I would never recommend this book to anyone. I was really disappointed with this book.
If I was you I wouldn’t even try to read this book.

The Hope is a wonderful book about redemption and healing.
Ruth and Owen are both in need of healing in different ways.
Together, through love, they heal each other, and help a precious child heal as well.

There is humour, and faith and trust, all things necessary for a healthy relationship.

I loved this book, as well as the first book in this series, The Wish!
I can't wait to read the next book in The Amish of Cedar Grove series.

This book turned out to be a decent book that I only picked up because it was given to me as a gift.
I didn’t have high expectations starting the story but from the beginning I was hooked. It was interesting and cough my attention from the beginning. There was an unexpected twist in it that I didn’t see coming but was good.
I didn’t care for the love part of the story too much as it felt blah. Both of the main character had better relationship with Grace than with each other.

Very cute story about second chances and finding love when you least expect it. I loved the little girl's connection to Owen and how she only felt safe with him. I felt like she was the one who brought Ruth and Owen together. I appreciated how Owen changed and what finally changed him.

I have read all of Patricia David's books and have really loved each and everyone of them.
For some reason this book really appealed to me, I love second chances and this book had everything from seconds chances to new hopes and excitement as seen thru a child's eye.
I am so looking forward to "The Promise" next in this series.

I didn't enjoy the book as much as the first in the series. I was hoping the characters from the first book would be a bigger part of the second book. I didn't get the same sense of authenticity or character depth as I did in the first book either. It was dramatic and surprising at times, but somehow it was just lackluster for me. It was still a decent read, but not outstanding.

This was such a good book I wasn’t expecting it to be be filled with tragedy though. It was suspenseful with them trying to work things out and find out what happened as well. Sometimes things are right in front of us and we can’t see it.

I’m looking forward to reading the next book I’m this series.

I always enjoy books written by this wonderful author and this book was no exception. Patricia Davids has written another complex and suspenseful story that kept me from my daily chores while I learned of Ruth and Owen’s history and hoped that they would somehow be able to come to terms with past mistakes and a lack of trust that separated them many years ago. Ruth is determined to give Owen the cold shoulder but when Owen discovers a young Amish child on his property during a blizzard he needs Ruth’s guidance and the two characters must work together with the police and the community to find Grace’s mother on the few clues Grace is willing to give them. The continuing search for Grace’s mother, the second chance romance and a renewed faith in each other guarantees a captivating and mesmerizing read. I read a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley and all opinions expressed in my voluntary review are completely my own.
