For Lee Squires, this particular phone call couldn't have come at a better time. English professor, poet, and professional house-sitter, Lee is wallowing in the heat and humidity of a Washington, D.C., summer and in the self-pity and depression that have been shadowing her life for some time.
It seems that a friend of hers has given her name to Pete Bonsecours, a Montana wilderness outfitter desperately in need of a replacement cook for an upcoming trail ride across the Continental Divide. Lee is more than ready for a change of pace, so it doesn't take much to convince her to sign on as the new cook.
Within days Lee is on her way out to Montana and the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Armed with everything from sleeping bag, long underwear, bathing suit, and sunscreen to her old cast-iron Dutch oven and a thermos filled with sourdough starter, Lee is ready for anything—anything but murder.
Filled with the fascinating details of a full-blown trail ride and the gripping suspense of a taut murder mystery.
English professor Lee Squires signs on as camp cook for a wilderness outfitter hired by the wealthy and dysfunctional Strand family. As the group begins the week-long trail ride through the Bob Marshall Wilderness, patriarch Cyrus Strand maliciously announces that he's written a new will, disinheriting his spoiled and avaricious children from his immense fortune.
Suddenly, Montana's pristine beauty turns menacing as greed and rage litter the scenic expanse. And now, between whipping up elk meatballs and sourdough bread, Lee must negotiate a trail of murder that turns deadlier by the day.
I can't think of a better means of getting yourself killed than getting all your family out in the wilderness & then telling them you've changed your will so they've all been disinherited. It's practically suicide. They certainly deserved it, though; what a repellant bunch they are.
Lee put herself in a lot of danger in an effort to bring the murderer out of hiding but it did look as if it might be the only way to do it. As the family closed ranks, it would have been almost impossible once they all returned to civilisation, & an innocent person would have taken the blame. After what happened to Miss Peach, I would have liked to see some serious damage to the perpetrator.
Lee Squires is an interesting & likeable character, & I enjoyed trekking through the Montana wilds on horseback with them all.
Poet and English teacher Lee Squires signs on as a camp cook for a Rocky Mountain wilderness outfitter. The customers are the rich and dysfunctional Strand family--patriarch Cyrus, his younger third wife, and his greedy adult children. There's going to be trouble on the trip, and Lee is right in the thick of it. Fans of Dana Stabenow and Nevada Barr may enjoy this mystery that combines the rugged outdoors with a strong, flawed woman who takes charge in a dangerous situation.
