His hangover began in a dungeon cell and got worse from there.
Lenk is not having a good day. Oh, sure, he had a great night--his band of adventurers, drunk on the reward from a quest completed, proceeded to get drunk on the ale they bought with that reward. But upon waking up in a cell with Kataria, his foul-mouthed and savage companion, he learned a nobleman lay dead in the streets, a city had been plunged into chaos, and all signs pointed to him doing it.
Now, accused of a crime they didn't commit--or at least, they think they didn't commit it; honestly, everything got a little blurry after the third drink--Lenk and Kataria must prove their innocence or lose their lives in the only justice the city knows: the arena.
A side-quest adventure for fans of Sam Sykes' Bring Down Heaven trilogy, this novella is the perfect shot for those craving bloodshed, adventure and monsters.
Sam Sykes is the author of Tome Of The Undergates, a vast and sprawling story of adventure, demons, madness and carnage. Suspected by many to be at least tangentially related to most causes of human suffering, Sam Sykes is also a force to be reckoned with beyond literature.
At 25, Sykes is one of the younger authors to have arrived on the stage of literary fantasy. Tome Of The Undergates is his first book, published in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Holland, and Canada. He currently resides in the United States and is probably watching you read this right now.
A very fun quick read. It's safe to say if you enjoyed this motley cast from the novels, you'll get a kick out of this. I only wish it had included more about the others besides Lenk & Kat as well.
A great story that ties in well with the rest of the series and gives part of the protagonists a chance to shine. Looking forward to more of their adventures!
Dobrze czasem oderwać się i przeczytać sobie coś bezwstydnie rozrywkowego. Zwłaszcza jeśli napisane jest z przymrużeniem oka, językiem przywołującym na myśl "Stalowego szczura". Dobra zabawa.
Ale & Blood is a fantastic novella that serves as the perfect introduction for people who are not familiar with the author's work. The author had me from the very first line and didn't let go until the last page was turned, rarely have I been so immediately hooked by a book.
The dialogue is snappy and laugh-out-loud funny, the author really has a way with words that makes me genuinely feel sad about my own writing. Unfortunately, it's hard to stay mad when he creates such interesting and varied characters and drops them into a high-fantasy world packed with monsters, madness and intrigue.
The characters really are the high point. This is the first book by Sam Sykes I've read, but they already feel like old friends. Kind of selfish, horrible old friends but old friends none-the-less. To develop that kind of response in a novella is something special and I can't wait to delve into the novels and see how they pan out with more time.
Ale & Blood: A Bring Down Heaven Novella is slick, funny, action-packed fantasy of the highest quality. Snappy one-liners, violent action and some genuinely memorable characters make this an essential read. I think I've found a new favourite author...
