A decent and even sporadically very much informative general introduction to German literature (from the post Romanticism period, from the early 19th Century, to the modern era, although German literature published post 2002 or so is, of course, by the mere necessity of the publication date, not going to be included), Bengt Algot Sørensen's Geschichte der deutschen Literatur 2: Vom 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart is readable, approachable (read for the most part not too difficult and academically dense in both scope and writing style) albeit that in my humble opinion, the author’s, Bengt Algot Sørensen’s presented text also often appears more than a bit short on especially analysis and literary interpretation (and for me personally, some of the lesser known but still important and essential authors of their respective periods and epochs generally seem to be rather missing in action in Geschichte der deutschen Literatur 2: Vom 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart, which is actually really quite massively frustrating and annoying to and for me, since German literature is more than the so-called accepted and feted canon, or at least, it certainly should be).

Still Geschichte der Deutschen Literatur 2: Vom 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart is to be warmly recommended as a basic and indeed as such and most definitely a more than than adequate introduction to German literature from post Romanticism until the late 20th century (but with the necessary caveat that a decent level of at the very least high intermediate German language fluency is an absolute must here) and the additional warning to NOT rely only on this one book (and its prequel) for academic reference and research purposes, but to also peruse other, more detailed and informative tomes on German literary history. For in particular if one is considering Geschichte der deutschen Literatur 2: Vom 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart for university graduate level PhD comprehensive exam preparation, considerably more knowledge, more information and details will more than likely be both required and even demanded, as well as assumed).

Since I've finished my second essay for this course, I am no longer in need of reading this one. I did not read all of it, because the period in time the course focused on was much narrower than the book's focus. However, what I did read, I liked. It gave an easily understood and useful knowledge of the time.
