Rayna Butler is an art geek, but even her Kool-Aid dyed hair and her edgy paintings don't make her stand out much from the crowd. So when she arrives at school one Monday morning and finds a note in her backpack that reads "Six Days to Die," she's sure that it's just a prank.
Jack Harkness is one of the toughest guys in school, a loner hiding his painful home life. When he receives one of the threatening notes he doesn't take it for anything he can't handle.
But others have received threatening notes, each with a different expiration date. "Six Days to Die"... "Two Days to Die"... "Twelve Days to Die"... there's no rhyme or reason to it. And none of the kids appear to have anything in common.
The students don't know how seriously to take the threats-until the first murder. Liam, the class salutatorian, is the first to go, when his house mysteriously burns down around him. Certain that their days are numbered, Rayna and Jack convince the others to join together to track down the killer before their time is up.

Lucienne Diver has written snark and suspense with her Vamped YA series featuring a teen fashionista who goes from chic to eek when she wakes up as one of the undead, her Latter-Day Olympians series featuring a heroine who can, quite literally, stop men in their tracks, and her YA suspense novels, Faultlines, The Countdown Club and Disappeared.

The Shadow Girls, her new epic fantasy, which David B. Coe/D.B. Jackson calls, “thrilling, powerful, redemptive, and exquisitely written,” is darker in tone. In a country that’s been at war for six years due to the supposed poisoning of the king of Jucar by his queen from their rival Frizenze, three women are about to rebel against their treatment and, with allies gained along the way, fight to reshape the face of power. The problem is, one of the women is quite mad, and she is in line for the crown. The trilogy continues with The Whisper Kin (2025) and The Illuminated Lands (2026).

The Shadow Girls is close to Lucienne’s heart, touching on feminist and gender issues, LGBTQIA+ themes and climatological fantasy. Both the religion and magical system are based on animism, the spirit in all things, but also the universal spirit, the All. The mageri, the great magic men who raid the anima for the power to create their battlefield constructs to crush their enemies, are killing the land, creating deprivation and disease. And…well, much, much more.

The Countdown Club by Lucienne Diver

Rayna, Jack, and Maria receive death threats in school. Rayna asks her best friend Evan to investigate. Soon they and the rest of The Meddlers are racing the clock to try to figure out who is behind the threats and prevent anyone else from dying.

Young adult murder mystery.
Reads intense. Loved the ending. Great cop in Stiles.

Jack. He has a lot to deal with. Physically abusive father, drunk and passed out mother, plus very sick younger brother. Now a death threat for him and Maria add more worries to his young burdened life. He plays the tough guy at school. He plays the hero in trying to protect Maria. She sees past his gruff attitude to the hero beneath.
I envision Jack going far after this. Strong, smart and good at heart.

Rayna. Twit. Sure, she’s compassionate and doesn’t want others hurt on her behalf. But when she’s grounded, for her own safety, she sneaks out of the house. Twice! Movie cliche. The only saving grace was her calling Evan to go with her. TG or we could have been left with one less hero to save the day.

Super Intense Thriller!

Page-turner! I couldn't put this book down. It was kind of Breakfast Club, the Scobby Gang, and a killer it two all rolled up together. I couldn't help but root for the Meddler's club member. Even Jack who was such a tough bully. Each member is so different, yet combined they make a good team. It's for sure they will never be the same again.

This story is action-packed, yet character driven. Suspicion runs a gamut of almost all the characters. I loved this book and couldn't put it down.

This book was recommended to me and I am very happy I took a chance on it. The premise surrounding a group of high school seniors was very interesting. The pace was good as I really didn't want to put the book down. The voices were very unique, they all came from different backgrounds, they all have secrets and all made me think they were guilty of a crime. I determined early on that it was a male that had killed their classmates but I just don't know which one. No surprises here but I was totally not surprised at who did it at the end but there were other amazing surprises.

Those Meddling Kids!

Loved, loved, loved this book. I always enjoy a good murder mystery, but this one was unique as it centered on a group of teenagers. It kind of took me back to my days of reading Nancy Drew books. Then there was the whole Scooby Gang vibe which was just spot-on! I kept looking forward to getting to sit back down and trying to puzzle out the murderer’s identity. There was also a nice amount of suspense... oh, and a guard-cat!! Fantastic book!

This book started off with some students receiving notes telling them how many days they have to live. The suspense doesn't stop. Students who are different circles come together to figure out the mystery and protect their friends. This book also shows that how someone acts at school isn't the whole story.

Really enjoyed this group of kids. They are tough cookies. The premise of the book was clever, and I feel like the suspense was handled well. We have 2 lead POVs, but unlike most dual POV books, the 2 POVs are not tied together in a romantic or close partnership. Of course, they are all part of the 'Meddlers' Countdown Club, but it's almost as if Jack and Rayna lead the 2 loose 'teams' within the group. They are drastically different. And that seems to be the magic behind making sure that everything was covered and all the personalities were used to their best advantage.

This is a YA suspense novel with only the barest hint of romance. Blink and you'll miss it. I think that was the right choice for the story. Every so often something would happen or someone would say or do something that would remind me I was reading a YA novel, but for the most part, I feel like this story hold it's own against any other suspense novel.
