About the author

Narayan Sanyal (bn: নারায়ণ সান্যাল) was a well-known & versatile writer of modern Bengali literature. He received several awards for literature including Rabindra Puraskar for Aporupa Ajanta (Bangla: অপরূপা অজন্তা) in 1969, Bankim Puraskar for Rupmonjori (Bangla: রূপমঞ্জরী) in 2000, and Narasingha Dutta Award. Many of his books were filmed and he won the Best Film Story Writer Award for Shotyokam (Bangla: সত্যকাম) by Bengal Film Journalists.

Sanyal wrote numerous books that dealt with many topics, such as children, science, art and architecture, travels, psychiatry, technology, refugee problems, history, biographical pieces, encyclopedia of animals, social novel and Devadasi-related. He also wrote a series of detective fiction called the Kanta (Thorn) series, the framework of which was borrowed from the Perry Mason series of novels by Erle Stanley Gardner. Some of the stories were inspired from popular Agatha Christie novels like Mousetrap, ABC Murders, etc.

Interestingly, this talented author also preferred writing books on deep shadow of many world famous works. One of the most popular Sci-Fictions Nakshatraloker Debatatma (Bangla: নক্ষত্রলোকের দেবাত্মা) is based on the transformation of human race from primitive creature to civilized intelligent species controlling the whole earth. Then it deals with Jupiter exploration and a super intelligent Computer HAL. The three parted book is a clear shadow of 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke. In his book, NS renamed HAL as 'Jantra-Na.' In his mother tongue Bangla, it means 'Not a Machine'.

His most popular work is Biswasghatak (Bangla: বিশ্বাসঘাতক) written about the Manhattan project that developed the first US Atom Bomb. This book is based on the shadow of Brighter than a Thousand Suns: A Personal History of the Atomic Scientists (1970), by Austrian Robert Jungk. Not a shadow, but almost translation in some parts. Few of the illustrations in this book have been taken from few Russian school level books.

Another book Timi Timingil (Bangla: তিমি তিমিঙ্গিল) is on Whales. This stands on an article published in Readers Digest. But while NS accepted this for Timi Timingil, he never mentioned or thanked authors of 2001 or Brighter.

Most of the "Kanta" series stories were copied or heavily inspired from Perry Mason novels. For example, "Ristedar-er Kanta" was copied from The case of the beautiful beggar, "Abhipurbak Ni-Dhatu Au-er Kanta" was inspired from The case of the restless redhead. Some of the stories were inspired from Agatha Christie stories. For example, "Dress Rehearsal-er Kanta" was inspired from Three Act Tragedy. NS acknowledged his inspirations in his first few "Kanta" series books, but forgot to do so for the latter ones.

Thousands of NS fans feel sorry of this as a man of his talent could have developed something even better instead of just 'Copying' and retouching others works while he had indeed produced some excellent works himself.

But it is undoubtedly accepted by all that NS was one of the finest authors in Bengali and he was a class apart from the flock of contemporary Bengali writers those who too dependent on sentiment and emotional overdose in their writings and too dependent on monopolist Bengali media/publication groups in commercial front.

ভবিষ্যতের পৃথিবী। তিনজন নভোচারী বের হয়ে যায় সৌরজগৎ ভ্রমনে। টার্গেট মঙ্গল-বৃহস্পতি-শনি হয়ে ইউরেনাসের উপগ্রহ ট্রাইটনের উদ্দেশ্যে। এ ভ্রমনে জীবন হারায় একজন, বেচে থাকে বব আর ওয়াম্বাসী। ফিরে আসবার সময় হাইবারনেকুলামের গভীর ঘুমে যায় দুজনে। পৃথিবীর কাছাকাছি এসে যখন ঘুম ভাঙে তখন মনুষ্য জাতি থেকে কোন সাড়াশব্দ না পেয়ে আতংকিত হয়ে যায় দুজনে। এবার কি হবে? পৃথিবীর চারপাশে ঘুরবার সময় হঠাৎ রেডিও ফ্রিকোয়েন্সিতে যোগাযোগ করে এক অজানা কণ্ঠ। তাদেরকে পৃথিবীতে নেমে আত্নসমার্পন করতে আদেশ দেয়। কে এই কণ্ঠস্বরের মালিক? মানুষের ভাগ্যে কিই বা জুটেছে?
এসব প্রশ্নের উত্তর পাবেন এই বইতে। বইটা ছোট। পড়তে বেশী সময় লাগে না। আবার বইয়ের মাঝখানে বিজ্ঞান আর অংকশাস্ত্র নিয়ে বেশ একটা সুন্দর অধ্যায়ও আছে (যদিও পড়ে আমি কম বুঝেছি)। অবশ্য কেউ চাইলে এই অধ্যায় বাদ দিয়েও পড়তে পারেন একথা লেখক নিজেই বলে দিয়েছেন।
বিশ্বাসঘাতক বইটা পড়ার পড়ে থেকে আমি লেখকের অনুরাগী। উনি এই টাইপ বইগুলাতে গল্পের সাথে বিজ্ঞানকেও সুন্দর করে উপস্থাপন করেন। গল্পটা ইন্টারেস্টিং লাগা শুরু করেছিল। কিন্তু কেন জানি শেষের দিকে এসে ভাল লাগল না। স্বৈরিনী নারীর চরিত্র আসলে এভাবে মিশ খায় বলে আমার মনে হয় না। সবমিলিয়ে তিন তারকা দিলাম।

মাল্টি বিলেনিয়ার গডফাদার ব্যক্তি ও দাম্পত্য জীবনে ছিলেন অসুখী।তাই সন্তানের প্রয়োজনে পৃথিবীর বিভিন্ন বিজ্ঞানীদের সাহায্যে গোপনে তৈরি করেন রোবোমানব।মূলত বিখ্যাত ব্যক্তিদের আদলে তৈরি করেন তিন শ্রেণীর রোবট।আলফা শ্রেণীতে আছে বিখ্যাত শাসকবর্গ - গুলিয়াস গীজার,রুডলফ ব্যাটলার .. ,বিটা শ্রেণীতে আছে বিখ্যাত সব রমণী - ক্লিওপ্রেট্টা ,হেলেন .. গামা শ্রেণীতে আছে আইনস্টোন,হাইজ্যাক ওল্ডটন... এর মতো বিজ্ঞানী, সংগীতজ্ঞ, চিত্রকর।
এরই মধ্যে পৃথিবীতে শুরু হয়ে গেছে ৩য় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ। যুদ্ধে ও তেজস্ক্রিয়তায় পৃথিবীর সব মানুষ ও প্রাণী ধ্বংস হয়ে যায়, বেঁচে রইলো গডফাদার ও তার রোবোমানব। একদিন মঙ্গল গ্রহ থেকে পৃথিবীতে হাজির হয় পৃথিবীবাসী এডওয়ার্ড ও তার স্ত্রী ডরোথি এবং সঙ্গী ক্রুকস। গডফাদার দুইজনকে পৃথিবীর দায়িত্ব নিতে বলেন।সমস্যা হয় ডরোথিকে নিয়ে।এক নারীকে নিয়ে দুই পুরুষের দ্বন্ধে এডওয়ার্ড মারা যায়,ডরোথি মানসিকভাবে অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়ে এবং ক্রুকস ভিলেন হিসেবে আবির্ভূত হয়।
কিছু বছর পর ২০২৬ সালে ট্রাইটন উপগ্রহ থেকে পৃথিবীবাসী ওয়াম্বাসী ও বব পৃথিবীতে ফিরে আসে।অন্যান্য যন্ত্রমানব তাদেরকে পৃথিবীর দায়িত্ব নিতে বলেন। এক্ষেত্রে আবারও সেই একই সমস্যা দেখা দেয়।ডরোথিকে নিয়ে বব ও ওয়াম্বাসী কলহে জড়িয়ে পড়ে। কে রচনা করবে পৃথিবীতে মানুষের নবপ্রজন্ম ?


রোবটিকসের উপর সাই-ফাই ঘরানার একটি বই।এই বই রচিত হয় ১৯৭৬ সালে।সময় বদলে গিয়েছে, বিজ্ঞান আরো আধুনিক হয়েছে।এই গল্প বর্তমানে ততটা রোমাঞ্চকর নয় হয়তো। এছাড়া বইতে নারীকে স্বৈরিণী ,বর্ণবাদ প্রভৃতি বিষয় উপস্থাপিত হয়েছে, লেখকের একজন একনিষ্ঠ অনুরাগী হয়েও এই বইটিকে সিনেমার স্ক্রিপ্ট মনে হয়েছে।

অনেকদিন পর সায়েন্স ফিকশন পড়লাম। বইটির শুরু থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত টিপিক্যাল সায়েন্স ফিকশনের মতো কিছু ব্যাপারকে স্বতঃসিদ্ধ বলে ধরে নেয়া হয়েছে, তা লেখক করতেই পারেন। গল্পের দিকটায় আসি।
গল্পটি দুজন নভোচারীর। দীর্ঘদিন পর পৃথিবীতে ফিরে এসে দেখেন এখানে কোনো শব্দ নেই। প্রথমদিকে জানা যায় পৃথিবীতে কোনো মানুষ বেঁচে নেই, পরবর্তীতে দেখা যায় মানুষ আছে, তবে তাদের বুদ্ধিমত্তা ও স্বাভাবিক চাহিদা নেই। অতপর জানা যায় নভোচারী দুজন বাদেও স্বাভাবিক আরো তিনপিস মানুষ আছে, আর পৃথিবীর বর্তমান দখলদার কোনো এলিয়েন না, বরং এরা মানুষের তৈরি রোবট।
গল্পের প্রথম দিকের ছন্দ ঠিক ছিলো মোটামোটি, কিন্তু মাঝে এসে খেই হারিয়ে যায়। আর শেষের দিকে তো ব্যাপারটা পুরোপুরি লাভ ট্রায়াঙ্গেলের গল্পে পরিণত হয়। খাপছাড়া।

এক বসায় পড়ার মতো বই, হাতে দু-তিনঘন্টার অবসর থাকলে পড়তে পারেন। শেখার মতো কিছু নেই, কিছু অবান্তর ধারণা পুশ করা হয়েছে, এই যা।
