Sultana Kosem:putere, ambitie, intriga

Rate this book

This is supposed to be academia and indeed the author has a PhD in History, but it really didn't seem like it reading the book.

I admired the author's work in archives; she drew from Ottoman, Venetian and Spanish archives, which I think must have been very hard work. The bibliography at the end of the book is also quite estensive but somehow you couldn't see it while reading the actual book. The author doesn't explain her reasoning behind her claims, cites works that also contradict her theories but doesn't say that in the notes.

Some of her claims are also quite weak too, like Kösem being a legal wife: she first says that Ottoman sultans didn't get married frequently and that if they did, their marriages would have been reported, but then concludes that Kösem must have married Ahmed I because in a letter sent to Venice to inform them of Murad IV's ascension, she is described as: "His generous mother Kösem, for the dead sultan Ahmed, whom Allah took to himself, was a very important person and the sultan loved her so much that he honoured her by marrying her.". At the same time she also says that maybe the letter had been commissioned by Kösem herself and that she was just trying to legitimise her role as regent to Murad IV, because in Europe wives are more esteemed than mere concubines... but also, she would have never lied about something so important so she must have truly been Ahmed I's wife.

So what is the truth?

The same confusion can be seen when she lists Kösem's children: she gives date of births for only 3 of them, considers Gevherhan Sultan one of her daughters and cites Tezcan's essay "The debut of Kösem Sultan's political career" but doesn't say that Tezcan actually has a different opinion altogether about Gevherhan's mother. The confusion heightens when she says that Fatma Sultan (born in 1606) is Kösem's eldest child but then says that Şehzade Mehmed was her child as well and... well, Mehmed was born on 8 March 1605 so, again, what is the truth?

I was recommended this book because apparently the author had found some new groundbreaking information about Kösem, but I was very very disappointed. When I read academia, I like to read the historian's reasoning behind their claims, I like to see how they reached their conclusions, but Kumrular cut this off.

I'm not sure I will bother buying her book about Nurbanu and Safiye now, if this is her method of doing history.
