Life for Nelson Samuels has never been straight-forward and logical. In fact, it’s that time once again… Time for everything about everything to change. He’d thought he’d made the logical decision for himself and his future when he went to Northwestern to study engineering. Of course, to do so, he had to leave Paige Grayson behind, but Nelson has learned that leaving those you love behind is just part of life. Unfortunately, this time leaving is proving to be harder than it’s ever been before, and Nelson can’t quite get himself to get past the memories of her or of the guy he used to be. Will going back one more time allow him to finally leave his past where it belongs and trudge into a future he wants no part of, or does life have something else in mind?
Paige Grayson had her heart broken when she was only 16. Letting go of the love she had for Nelson Samuels has proven more difficult than she could ever have imagined. As she tries to get on with her life and move on, to forget about him and how life used to be, she finds herself on a never-ending merry-go-round of boyfriends and potential boyfriends, remembering and trying to forget. It doesn’t help that her best friend is now in love with Nelson’s best friend, and their quest to put her back together again is not helping anything. But how can she tell them that, and can she finally find peace in knowing that first love might be special but it might not always mean it’s forever?

Staci Stallings returns with book four, Broken Heart Strings (The Imagination Series: A New Adult Contemporary Novel), bringing her readers back into the lives of Nelson and Paige.
Readers returned to Nelson and Paige after the series’ pit stop into Wes’ and Lauren’s lives in book three: Little Drops of Sunshine.Which brought the audience into a year and a half after Nelson left for college. Much has changed with Nelson and Paige, and ‘broken’ is such an adequate word to describe them. Both are in want of something to make their lives purposeful and fulfilling. Yet, they struggle to be content in life, because what’s missing can’t be filled with a broken love.
Since first reading Stallings’ books, I’ve appreciated the connection her characters develop and have with God; and this book does not disappoint. The spirituality of the novel allows the readers to see what it is like to fall for a God who’s love is undying and unconditional. In this book, God–as He is in real life–is hand and hand, step by step present with the characters.
Reading this book, I heard the haunting yet enticing music waft through the church as Nelson’s heart drove his fingers to play, I understood the want to be loved as Paige searched, held onto, and denied it, and I wished for their Broken Heart Strings to mend, even though the sting of the break pushed them to different paths.
I loved this book so much! Staci Stallings' books always leave me wanting more. The summary does not do it justice! There's so many different aspects to this story: friendships, romantic relationships, breakups, rebounds, being an introvert, adjusting to college life, finding your purpose, finding God, etc. I personally related to Nelson's character for the first half of this book: letting my GPA become too much of a priority and following expectations that I didn't necessarily want to do. I loved his character development and am very excited to see how he works through everything in the next book!
I choose this rating because I enjoyed Nelson emerging from self centered to learning to think for himself with the help of friends, teachers, and Pastor Mark. Most importantly learning about God and prayer. I actually learned a lot reading this book. I recommend this series to all.

What a story! For a book that started so slow it sure picked up fast and grabbed my attention and never let up. Deep, intriguing, interesting. You will not go wrong with this book.
