I Do Not Like That Name

Rate this book
This funny picture book about friendship, family, identity, and why we have names is illustrated with bright collage art and is a perfect selection for story time.

What’s in a name? Herb and Sophie are eating breakfast one day when they notice a coupon on the cereal box for an elephant. Imagine how much fun they could have with an elephant!

When the nameless elephant arrives in the mail, he announces that it is Herb and Sophie’s job to name him. Herb has many suggestions (String Bean, Sweet Potato) and so does Sophie (Buttercup, Twinkle Toes) but nothing seems quite right to the huge and very brave elephant.

Why do we need names anyway? Where do names come from? Where did your name come from? How do you make your name your own?

Herb and Sophie decide to adopt an elephant. But they never imagined the difficulty in selecting an appropriate name for their elephant. This is a story about identity. It would be a nice way to kickstart a discussion of names and families. Cut paper, ink, and gouache were used to prepare the full-color art.

I DO NOT LIKE THAT NAME features a girl, Sophie, and her rabbit, Herb, as they order an elephant from the cereal company. When the elephant arrives, they find out it does not yet have a name. How will they choose one? The book explores why we need names, where names come from, and ultimately is just a cute story of making a new friend.

What I loved: The illustrations in this book are interesting, like paper cut-outs, giving it a unique flair. The text is simple and straightforward, making it ideal for a young audience. The message about names can start some interesting discussions about where the reader's names came from.

Final verdict: Cute, simple, and fun, this picture book explores the why and how of naming in an approachable and colorful way. Children will enjoy the straightforward language and brightly colored illustrations as they watch Sophie and Herb help their elephant to obtain his own name.

I like the illustrations in the book. They’re super cute and I liked the relationship between Herb, the rabbit and Sophie, the girl. I’m not a fan of the storyline as I felt it fell flat. Perhaps there could have been more to the story or have something else happen, because in the end, I felt like I needed more.

Sophie and Herb have sent away for a free elephant and when the elephant doesn’t have a name, the elephant informs them that they must give him a name. That doesn’t work as the names they pick out for him, he doesn’t like. Reflecting on how Sophie and Herb got their own names, elephant remembers his own past and he comes up with a name for himself. Will this name be, okay?

Names are important but Sophie and Herb don’t spend that much time discussing how they got their own names to make this a theme of this book. The friendship that Sophie and Herb have is great and when they allow the elephant to be their friend, that was sweet and this could be the theme of this book, friendships.

Herb the Rabbit is back, this time on a quest to help out a nameless friend. With her trademark impeccable attention to heart-warming and humorous detail in her illustrations, to her empathy for kids evident on every page (a name is “what you friends yell when they are cheering you on”), Erin McGill dives into the nuances of personal identity and finding your own way with her tale of Herb the Rabbit and his friend Sophie helping to name an elephant.

Started out fun but the ending was rushed and flat. Cute illustrations.
