From New York Times bestseller and USAToday bestselling Texas romance author Jean Brashear, the fourth book in the popular Texas Heroes: The Gallaghers of Sweetgrass Springs series, the story of the Gallagher heir who disappeared after a tragedy seventeen years ago:

Jackson Gallagher's teenage rebellion cost him everything: his home, his family and the girl who could only love him in secret. Seventeen years later, a wildly successful multi-millionaire, he is drawn back to Sweetgrass Springs to confront his past: the father who banished him, the town that turned its back on him…and the woman he has never been able to forget.

The last person Veronica Butler is ready to see is the man who made her believe they’d be together forever, then vanished and broke her heart. Widowed and struggling to hold onto her children's heritage, she refuses his help but has trouble resisting the way he makes her remember how deeply she once loved him…except that when he learns the secret she's been keeping all these years, she'll lose him all over again.

A letter to Rod Stewart resulting in a Cinderella birthday for her daughter sowed the seeds of New York Times and USAToday bestselling author Jean Brashear's writing career. A lifelong avid reader, at the age of forty-five with no experience and no training, she decided to see if she could write a book. It was a wild leap that turned her whole life upside down, but she would tell you that though she's never been more terrified, she's never felt more exhilarated or more alive. She's an ardent proponent of not putting off your dreams until that elusive 'someday'—take that leap now.

Over fifty published novels later, the five-time RITA finalist and RTBookReviews Career Achievement Award winner has accumulated a whole passel of war stories to swap and loves nothing better than talking writing and books with readers and fellow writers.

And she'd still take that leap, war wounds and all.

Whew. Sucks having to go back home after over a decade when no one there has known if you were dead or alive. And now there are all the feelings you've tried not to fee this whole time.

The Gist: Jackson left town as a teenager when his father beat him and kicked him out. He decided to vanish. Left everything behind and it's been over a decade since he's had any contact with anyone other than one auntie who's been sworn to keep his life secret. But she's called him home and he has to face friends and family who've had no idea if he was alive or dead all these years. Including the girl he used to love who married his best friend shortly after he left and is hiding one whopper of a secret.

Jackson and Veronica. Okay. Jackson had a terrible childhood. He made something of himself after he left, though. He's stoic and isolated and I felt for him. He was a broken child when he ran and kept people at arms distance ever since. It was hard watching him try to mend fences and deal with his emotions. He's a great guy, though, and I loved watching him with Veronica's kids.

Veronica? She was okay. I had some struggles with her personality and the whole you're good enough to fuck but not keep thing. She's had a hard life as well, though, and is a hard worker and does her best. So I didn't hate her. I just wanted to shake her now and again.

The romance was okay, too. They had a childhood connection. Were first loves. First heartbreaks.

There was a little suspense as he dealt with a leak at his company though it was somewhat easy to figure out.

My big issue was that his father was abusive and everyone just brushed it off and were like you shouldn't have run, you should mend fences. I'm sorry. No. If you beat your child and throw them out no one should be defending you or acting like the child (even if grown now) should get over it. That really irked me. And none seem surprised that was why he left just you should have come to xyz for help and a place to stay. Ahhh!

Overall. An okay read. Not fantastic but not terrible. Had some good elements but nothing that's too incredibly memorable or makes me want to shout you neeeeed to read this now!! Ah well.

I have loved the "Texas Heroes" series. I have grown to love all the characters. They feel like family to me. I've waited a long time for "Texas Rebel" to be finished and it was worth it. It was painful to read in parts, as I knew it would be, remembering some of Jackson's history, but it was such a great and satisfying ending. It was emotionally gripping ( I even teared up a couple of times), and I couldn't put it down until I saw them happy and together. Wonderful job, Jean. You definitely did Jackson justice and left he and Veronica healed and happy!

Audiobook Review: Texas Rebel (The Gallaghers of Sweetgrass Springs #4) by Jean Brashear (Author), Eric G. Dove (Narrator)

Texas Rebel is my favorite Jean Brashear novel. Jackson and Veronica deliver a knockout punch to the emotions. They thought forever was meant to be theirs, until heartache turned out to be lurking on the horizon. How does a person forgive the one who broke their heart, when next they see them again? Just when I think I'm all cried out, Brashear has me reaching for the Kleenex again.

Jackson is back in Sweetgrass to the shock of the town. Jackson and Veronica have a ton of baggage to overcome as he tries to melt her icy wall of defense, mend fences with the his siblings, and come to accept how the people in Sweetgrass feel about him. The kids also help to make you smile on this story. This book also provides a little intrigue and suspense regarding Jackson's company.

I voluntarily read and reviewed this book.

Update: 1/20/19 Audio Book version

The narration was great. I am continually amazed at Eric G. Rove's talent. I had read this book about a year ago but listening to it was like experiencing it for the first time. I was so caught up in the narration, my sister would periodically ask me why I had a certain expression on my face, or why I was sitting there with a silly grin.

Eric makes each character an individual. You forget it is the same person reading. You can picture the different adults, the kids (twin girls and a teenage boy), each with a distinct personality. Listening provides for a relaxing time, or for motivation to help getting through housework, or enduring a long commute.

I plan to try one of the books I haven't read before I listened to the audio book to see if there is a difference.

I would recommend this one because both the story and the narration are good!

This book deals with a lot of heartache and the hope of healing for many. Jackson Gallagher comes back to Sweetgrass Springs after being contacted by an old friend. But he is unsure if he can stay because of what happened 17 years earlier when his bather banished him and the town he loved turned their back on him. Can he find peace with the past and find his way back to the only woman he has ever loved.
Veronica Patton Butler is struggling to survive and support her 3 children on the flower farm she started with her dead husband. The last thing she expects or needs is the appearance of Jackson. They both have so many secrets and pain, that they may not be able to find their way back to each other. Then add the fact that Jackson is extremely rich and head of a major gaming company that has a leak within the company that could bring the company down. Can the two work thru all their problems and find each other and solutions to all their problems

Love Aunt Ruby. She is bound and determined to bring Sweetgrass back. Jackson Gallagher has left and vowed never to return. He was determined to stay away but Aunt Ruby said it was imperative to come home. Once there, nothing goes as planned. He sees Veronica for the first time in 17 years. Old feelings as still there but she didn't wait. She married a friend of his. Now that David has died, she is having a hard time. Jackson feels like he has to help but she is putting up walls. Love Veronica's twin girls Abby and Beth. All hell breaks loose. His company is under attack and he feels the pull to be home. Jackson has fences to mend before he can stand before Veronica and declare his intentions. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

I love this series and after reading this book Jackson Gallagher is one of my favorite characters. Seventeen years ago he left Sweetgrass Springs penniless, shamed, and alone. He left behind all his family including his twin sister and the love of his life Veronica. His surprise reappearance throws his family, the town, and especially Veronica into a tailspin.

This story is emotional, heartwarming, and even painful at times, but it was a book I simply couldn't put down. Definitely a recommended read.

I love the story books that Jean Brashear write about the Gallagher's of Sweetgrass Springs. What a crazy bunch, especially their women. The story of Jackson I found was so heart warming, sad, heartbreaking, and in parts where you cried and in parts where you laughed. I would recommend her books if you want to enjoy the heart filled stories of, The Gallagher's of Sweetgrss Springs.

4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Do read these books in order. Each novel is a stand alone, but it is a far richer experience if you follow the progression (and cameos) of characters that were introduced in the earlier books. Main complaint. It took too long for Jackson and Veronica to have their heart-to-heart talk and explain their actions 17 years earlier. Secondly, I understood why Jackson's disappeared when he was 17.However, why didn't his best friends ever look for him or locate him?

4.5 stars! This was the first book I had read in this particular series, but it stands alone really well. I just adore a good second chance romance, and this one was great. I loved Jackson and Veronica, and the children were just adorable! I was also intrigued by the subplot about the mole and was definitely surprised by the villain!

After the way Texas Dreams ended I could not wait to see what was going to happen in Texas Rebel. I enjoyed Texas Rebel and I found myself rooting for Jackson and Veronica. I was entertained with Texas Rebel I found it a little predictable, I was okay with that. I figured out who the culprit was causing Jackson trouble before the read knows there is trouble. I appreciated Veronica wanting figure out how to handle things, but sometimes her stubborn streak got a little annoying and Jackson's overbearing side got annoying. By the end of Texas Rebel I was okay how it ended. I my opinion it's predictable.

Jackson was run from town at a young age, vowing to never return. He had no idea the pain he left and the lives he changed doing to. Veronica was one of the many, and her life already had too much pain. Jackson must now decide what he wants his future to be. A great read. The narration was awesome.

Good read

Jean Brashear really knows how to bring out the emotions in her books and great story lines. This book has romance, angst, a lot of sadness and introspection, a little sex, some humor, and a side story of mystery. But I love this whole series. Highly recommend.
