The first part of the 'FUNA trilogy' (lol) finally gets its English presence thanks to Sol Press. This is actually FUNA's first work that revolves around dense girls gaining the power/knowledge and travelling to another world.

While I still have no idea why FUNA is so damn popular that all their works have been brought to English, by no less than 3 different publishers, there's definitely a sort of charm when reading their works that makes it hard to put down even if it leaves me with a sense of disappointment afterwards.

Being the first work, Saving 80k is surprisingly the work I've enjoyed the most so far, relatively speaking. Unlike later works, protagonist Mitsuha somehow gains the ability to phase between her world and another world, which does lead to a certain recklessness as she (ab)uses the power to bring current technology over to the predictably medieval-era world.

As usual, this leads to some really harebrained scenarios, such as Mitsuha planning parties for nobles, trading her spare underwear for cash and planning her retirement by bringing the other world's gold to her world to trade for pure cash as a commodity item. Yeah it's just full of craziness.

Yet somehow, FUNA manages to make everything work well in the context of the story's setup, which is something that feels lacking in Potions and Average Abilities, his later works that tend to invest more strictly in to the isekai genre. I suppose the ability to slide thru worlds at her own convenience does tend to excuse a lot of ridiculousness of Saving 80,000 Gold.

Either way, this is a FUNA work through and through, so be warned about the aimless writing and forced otaku references being sprinkled throughout the work. It's not really something that will appeal to most people but I suppose it does come with its own charm....

I think that the author made the main character a little bit too practical and made everything too easy for the main character to solve...If you think about it, the main character only needs to buy things in Japan on Earth and sell them in the other world, but the "portal cost" is never really explained or justified. It's not really relevant in Book 1, because all the main character is taking are things that she buys in Japan and can carry with her two hands. She has yet to take airplanes, aircraft carriers, tanks, etc. and really take over the other world (like has been a theme in some futuristic fantasy-Sci-fi) books and movies...
It's already a bit over the top that she can teleport while on Earth, go to a gun dealer in a hot-spot on Earth buy her illegal weapons and then take them, without any mana, crystals, life-force, cost or sacrifice to another world...
I liked the real-life photos included with the items that the main character sells, or talks about, because most light novel series lack a real description of character, events, things and world development. Including pictures solves most of it in an easy (picture worth a 1000 words kind of way).
There is no real Rule of Equivalent Exchange/ Game-like Balance in this Light Novel series. The main character can do anything, but there is no cost/no real penalty for doing everything that she does, the way she does. She pays for the things on Earth, and sells them in the other world, but there is no catch. No strings attached...
I like the fact that the main character is practical and smart. She is almost too good to be true...though...if she can make it and go back and forth on Earth, why does she need another world to retire in?? She could literally live anywhere?? and do exactly the same thing (buy, sell, commerce)???

To start: this is a "light novel" but is not a LIGHT novel, at 456 pages! I'm pretty sure it's two volumes combined into one, based on the "bonus" chapter in the middle of the book and the TWO afterwords at the end.

That said, until I realised that, I felt like the siege is where the books should have ended, rather than dragging it out to include the development of the county. The anime agreed, as that is basically where the first season (of hopefully more) ends.

On that: I feel the LN is slower to start, since it takes longer for Mitsuha to discover the reason for her ability, I will say so I don't have to tag for spoilers. The anime jumps straight over that since it doesn't add much to the story for the extra time she spends doing nothing of narrative consequence. Although, the anime adds in some filler between the attack in the castle and when she prepares for the siege, I guess to pad out the episodes so they could end properly with the siege as the climax? (also changed: the number of "bosses" during the siege).

Short of it is, I think the anime is better paced, although it feels a little aggravating when Mitsuha makes certain terrible decisions... though sometimes that then makes her very human and relatable, compared to the heroes who make zero mistakes because "power fantasy" I guess. *shrug*

I like it, enough to have sat through a HUGE TOME, but it's not my fave. I do like that she is MOSTLY levelheaded, though, and tries to plan for things like suddenly losing her ability and also in the event she dies or gets stuck on Earth, the people in the other world aren't completely upended. I guess there's some good revenge fantasy, also, but I still tend to forget about this series after a few days.

While contemplating her next step in life, Mitsuha is pushed from a cliff. She wakes up in another world, one with a medieval technological level. Soon after she realizes she can travel back to Earth at will offering an excellent opportunity for profit in trade. Of course doing so is easier said than done.

The MC is typical for the author, an intelligent young woman, but naïve. The fact that she trips over little things such as grown pearls and selling fish inland is both believable for her and the world. Some of her actions are a bit silly and for me grinch worthy. I wonder whether we will see some torches and pitchforks in the next part after all she is wise enough not to sell stuff that have a big impact but still brings over solar panels, boilers and TVs (for her own use)?

In the end, I enjoyed the story. It is a good twist to a familiar plot. I look forward to the next part, although I hope it loses a bit of its silliness. Such naivety gets tiresome for me quickly.

This was husband's suggestion and I'm beginning to believe he does NOT steer me wrong. This was a super light but quite intriguing plot and I'm glad becaause I wanted some break from heavy action after my last read: Orient 2

This made me wonder what I would do if I could go back and forth between my world and another and honestly? A general store does NOT sound all bad, haha. I'd be more into the consultation side though. The event planner bit was more my pace.
In short, I can see myself reading the next books in the series.

I don't understand the appeal of this story. Things happen but it feels like nothing happened. Things don't go perfectly, but it feels like nothing bad ever happens to the protag. It feels like I'm just reading someone's diary. There's no mystery, no drama, nothing beneath the surface to hold my interest or get me to care about anything that's happening. Protag just wants money and sells random shit from Japanese convenience stores to people in an isekai. That's it. That's the story. It's boring.

FUNA.......

This sigh... If you have read any work by this author you know not to expect intelligence from the mc. It's just a comedy not even funny comedy. FUNA why make all of your mc's sloop clueless? It's kinda getting old.

Funny and entertaining

No hero’s in this one just what most people would probably do if they could travel between worlds. It’s lighthearted and funny. Can’t wait to read the next one!

It's nice to see a protagonist who isn't afraid to pull off a nice grift on some fools for gold coins. She doesn't get stuck in the tropes of other novels and isn't adventuring or doing stupid romance stuff.

I give it a 4 star because it gave more information than what the anime adapted. There were more details, and we got more on what happened when Mitsuha became a viscountess. If the anime did had a s2 it would be the other half of the first volume.

Fun. Light. Frilly. But also deep and theological. The book's hook at the beginning is a work of art.

This follows Mitsuha, as through certain circumstances she gains the ability to traverse between her world (normal earth) and another. The new world is without any modern technology. She realises she might one day lose her powers so comes up with a plan to save 40,000 gold pieces in each of the worlds so she wouldn't have to work ever again and can live in luxury. We see her set up a shop and navigate through life in this new world, trying to make as much money as she can whilst building relationships.

Yet one thing just grated on me. The MC is 18 (which is great and an actual rarity for these kinds of books), but why do we constantly have to hear about how she's so small and petite and cutesy and tiny? It adds absolutely NOTHING to the story. Like everyone thinks she's between 8-12 years old, and keeps repeating this even in internal monologue. They are so amazed that a smol child like her is doing what she's able to do. Why can't she be actually 18 though? Or even actually 12? Furthermore, she now can't age and is stuck like this forever..

In all, it was a fun and easy read. I really needed something to fill my Ascendance of a Bookworm hole, as I've decided to drop that series at book 15 I think? It made me want to keep on reading, which is all I can hope for due to my terribly short attention span.

I don't know yet if I'll continue with this series.

I really enjoyed this, much like the authors other works this one is an isekai slice of life. While normally their works focus on an over powered main character this one seems to be going a different route though their ability could still become over powered. Unlike gods or video games or reincarnation normally used in this genre the author came up with a more unique approach to how and why isekai though it could use a little fleshing out. While I really don't want to spoil anything I have to explain that my favorite part of the story is that it's like a cross from one of my favorite book series Jumper and a standard slice of life. There isn't really any action in this one though it looks like there may be in the future, and the author tends to glaze over some things in this and all of the rest of their works with a "Why? well that's just how it is!" sort of mentality that you get used to. There is a little humor but mostly I recommend this for the relaxing pace it sets. In my opinion this was the best work from this author yet.

Did not finish
August 15, 2022
I usually try to finish anything unless there's an objective reason to be dropping it (i.e incest, the author is weird etc.) but I can't get myself too finish this one for some reason... it just seems unbearable, idk. boring. somehow. 5 days and barely and progress on the novel, I just decided to drop it
