You definitely know Jaws and Critters. But what about Sliggers? In this first part of a series of three the author presents his "Bogeymen from the Sea". Fearsome monsters (with a touch of Lovecraft) attack a little town by the sea, Sweetsboro. Will the Sheriff and his team master the threat? What about Mason, his girlfriend, Danny and the old creole cook? I really enjoyed this creature feature. Perfect read not only if you're on a seaside holiday. And look at that cover! Entertaining, eerie, evil. Gimme five for this stunning page turner. That's the way modern horror should be. Cant't wait for part 2 to start. Highly recommended!

Surprisingly solid monster movie. A small coastal town is attacked by six-foot lizard squid beasts with a hunger for human flesh. An assortment of American small-town cliches turns up mostly to get eaten in a gruesome fashion. This seems to be an homage to books like the Guy N. Smith's Crab series or Clickers. It gets pretty violent and has an action-filled third act. Small town sheriffs, diner owners, the grocery store manager who sleeps with his teen employees, the loner son of an abusive alcoholic, and our heroes: a boy visiting home from college and the town sweetheart. The front half has several unsettling sex scenes (culminating in a monster attack), but it's almost kind of sincere. Somewhere between the shotgun blasts and severed limbs, a little heart.

If you follow my reviews, you'll know that I have a special love for books where things chomp on humans (deserving or not). This hit all the right notes.
While there are moments of SF channel silliness (love the campy nature of it), you have some ravenous critters who are definitely creepy. I would not want to face these things!
Our characters are fun and all are fair game for our hungry beasts!
Don't take it too seriously - just enjoy the chomp-fest!

The first thing I noticed about this book was the scary cover, which I love! The book itself turned out to be a decent read overall once it got into the plot. We do spend a lot of time focusing on the personal lives of the characters. Mason returns to town and is rocked with his mother's death, he's getting on the wrong side of the gang who bullied him at school and trying to date his childhood friend Eaver. His friend Danny lives with his bullying father Ricky, who is also secretly sleeping with the girl Danny has a crush on, Ricky wants Danny to quit school and get a job but won't give him one at his store. Danny is 20 and it is beyond me why he continues to be a doormat to a father who doesn't care about him. Why doesn't he move in with Mason? Eaver's mother puts pressure on her to work in the family business and not go to college. Yes, very supportive parents in this town!
Away from the family and love angst, people are starting to go missing around town from fishermen to courting couples. A local man insists that it is Sliggers, a mythical monster used in stories to scare previous generations of kids but this time the man is right. Sliggers are hitting town, attacking people in the water, the beaches and now in the town itself. The police join forces with a few concerned locals to try and find the lair of the creatues and destroy them before they destroy the town. I liked the whole idea of the Sliggers and the attacks on the people were nicely written and entertaining. Characters like Cinch-the cook who first sees the Sliggers, the police, the diving biologist...I very much liked the scenes they were in. While I liked our three MCs, I could do without their personal relationships, but it didn't destroy the main story either. The Sliggers and the investigation were interesting enough that the story didn't need the vendetta with Mal. Again though, I didn't hate it or anything.
It was a decent horror story and was well written. Characters were varied and mostly interesting. If you like a sea monster creature feature then this will keep you going for a few hours.I would read more by the author.

So glad I read this one!
I had no idea what to think of this book's title and I almost didn't check it out. But, as my title says, I am glad I read it. I fell in love with the main characters and the town where they live. Sliggers took me in from the first chapter and didn't disappoint me once. I won't describe the creatures because the author did such a great job of making me imagine they were real. Job well done!

Quite surprising
Just your typical American small town coastal community with its own personal sea monster. And a pretty cool sea monster actually. Got this on Kindle unlimited and fully recommend it for anybody who enjoys a good monster story.

A TALE OF SLITHERING AND BITING SPOOKABLES IT IS......
Hello, I liked this story. Not very deep or scientific. Just sit back and enjoy. That's what these kinds of stories are for. Good job. Thanks.

Nasty Sliggers
Did we ever figure out how the Sliggers appeared and why?
Great characters.
Needs a bit more background/info on these vile nasty creatures.

Sliggers by Michael Yowell is a fantastic underwater creature feature. It’s a straightforward story told in the classic creature horror style and flows with suspense, action, gruesomeness, and terror.
The creatures are appropriately horrifying, the characters are simple but engaging, and the setting is absolutely perfect. Sliggers is a fun, chilling, and compelling read. It has an excellent pace, evocative dialogue, and I enjoyed it immensely.
And you’re going to love where the sliggers get their name!
Don’t be fooled by the simple synopsis; it understates the story. This is a shelf-worthy and highly recommended read for fans of classic creature feature horror.
And look! There are more. Three books in all. You know I have to read them all now.

Need more
Shades of classic sea monster stories. Would like more character development. Easy and entertaining to read. Just too short. Too limited to be truly satisfying
