Of Men and Mary: How Six Men Won the Greatest Battle of Their Lives

Rate this book
Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC, calls this book, “Anointed!”, Exorcist Fr. Gary Thomas, subject of the movie, “The Rite,” says, “OF MEN AND MARY is superb. The six life testimonies contained within it are miraculous, heroic, and truly inspiring.” Certain books as this come along that have the power “to transform lives, to free people from darkness,” claims Br. Daniel Maria Klimek, T.O.R. “I plan to share this tremendous work with many through the years.”

Powerful in the spirit, OF MEN AND MARY also delivers tasty doses of pure entertainment. You will find yourself inspired by a murderer, a sweet lamb who lost it all, and a man who literally died—and then came back to life. You will suddenly root for a football player tackled by the Blessed Mother, a man caught up in illicit sexual liaisons, and a man whose marriage was as good as dead.

While OF MEN AND MARY may be about six males, it is for everyone, because it is also a book about a woman. In the heat of the fiercest of spiritual battles, when all seemed lost and these men were left with nothing to stand on but stormy seas, they were given a lifeboat. That lifeboat—that woman—is the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is the boat of safety for all of us, the surest and safest passage to the heart of her Son. She is our victory and sweet reassurance that God's plan is infinitely better than our own; and she is our challenge to follow her Son, no matter the cost, no matter how fierce the battle. Read the stories of these brave men, and you will inevitably come away with a desire to climb in the boat with them and sail safely home.

I did not realize this was based on Conversions revolving around Medjugorie. It is not an approved apparition and I do not follow Medjugorie because of this. The conversion stories are Charismatic in nature, although I did pull some themes out that were not flowery and emotional.

Overall, I am glad that something good has come from Medjugorie.

Wonderful, heart warming stories that show the power of God in the individual. The Lord can take anyone, at any time, in any condition and bring them directly to His infinite love and mercy. The Blessed Mother, front and center, led these six men to her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Miracles that open hearts.
I have heard many stories like these and lived one myself. I always love hearing about how the Blessed Mother has worked in people's lives. She has one goal, to bring you to Her son.
If you are interested in how Medjugorje played into several of these, read this book.

Fascinating and Encouraging

This is an account of fascinating conversions and personal relationships of men and their savior, Jesus, and the Blessed Mother. A true spiritual encounter of inspiration and encouragement to live a more devoted Catholic life.

This is a book in a million. It is an extraordinarily powerful testimony that pulls no punches. It is the sort of book that 15 years ago I would have thrown in the trash after the first ten pages because it tells of the power and love of God expressed in mighty acts of mercy. Miracles.
It wasn’t acceptable in sophisticated Christian circles talk of such things. Now however my eyes have been opened and I realise that the world is in such a state of self-satisfied slumber that the majority don’t even imagine it could be swaggering towards a precipice - even though to many it’s obvious. Science and the prophets (Suzuzuki, Atenborough, and now, babes and sucklings like little Greta) have been
warning us for decades“ but all we can talk about are missiles faster than sound, arming ourselves in space, and burning more coal and oil. “The best lack all conviction and the
worst are full of passionate intensity” sings the poet. We need a wake-up call as never before, one loud enough to rouse us out of our self-induced coma.
This book attempts to do that. Will it succeed? With some, definitely, but with enough to change things... I doubt it! “If they didn’t believe Moses and the prophets, neither will they believe if one should rise from the dead.” said the Lord.

I saw and was saved.

My wife and I went to Medjugorje in 1990. I was, like many, curious about the Holy Mother appearing to the children in this day and time. At the time my wife was not a Catholic and was opposed to becoming a Catholic. While there we saw all the events discussed in this book. Upon returning my wife asked to become Catholic and I learned what being Catholic really meant. My wife is now with Jesus and Mary, praying for me. Believe because it is all true.

An overemphasis on spectacular events and somewhat obsessive focus on the Medjugorje apparition site (it's mentioned in all six stories in one way or another) coupled with an overall package that doesn't always live up to the book's own promise made for a flawed read, though there is still plenty of food for thought and material for meditation to be found here.

CONTENT
The core premise of this book is that it collects six different stories of faith and conversion through a special devotion to The Blessed Virgin Mary. As someone who certainly does not live a perfect life as a Catholic, I found this premise deeply intriguing and had some high hopes for these testimonies. Unfortunately things got off to a little bit of a weird start. It focused very heavily of Medjugorje, which is something I have only a high-level knowledge of. There is a helpful summary of this apparition site as well as the Catholic Church's official stance on it at the back of the book, but I think this content might have been better suited at the beginning. Even with this context though, I still felt as though this person's account of his experiences there were a little indulgent and melodramatic (I don't doubt that miraculous things happen there, I just feel as though the account was a bit over-the-top and confusing). Fortunately things evened out a little in the second testimonial even though there was still a heavy emphasis on more extreme/miraculous circumstances. Things got even more interesting in the third chapter when we see the conversion story of a convicted murderer and how he was even able to facilitate conversion among his other inmates. With all three of these testimonials though, I did feel as though the narrative voice of the writing was a bit guarded. The three men tell us that they were terrible sinners and to some extent, we can probably imagine what they might have done, but I left wishing that I had a better understanding of who they were and why they did what they did. Having this more personal approach might have helped me feel more moved by their conversion stories.

Fortunately, things get a lot more personal in the second half of the book with all three of the testimonies being far more raw while still remaining appropriate for what one might expect from a Catholic publication. The fourth and the sixth chapters were probably the best that this book had to offer, each for their own reasons, and they felt the closest to what I was expecting when I first picked this up. These two stories alone made this a worthwhile read even though the others were each interesting in their own way. I especially appreciated the representation of "little miracles" in these accounts and how the two men persevered through truly horrific situations. I also found myself contemplating whether I would have handled the situations they found themselves in with as much grace (though I certainly hope that I never have to find out). I do wish that the book focused more on these more modest workings of God, Mary, and The Holy Spirit since most of us don't get a grandiose wake up call. I also wish that there was a little more diversity in representing stories from people who didn't enter the church (4/6 are from men who either became a priest or a deacon - which is fine, but you don't have to enter the church to have a successful conversion). Overall, I think there is a lot of material to pray on and a lot of good food for thought. I think having some interludes between the chapters with some thoughts/questions for guided meditation may have made this a stronger package, but there's also a fine line between that sort of thing and interfering with what someone might reflect upon on their own, so perhaps it's for the best that the stories stand on their own.

PAPERBACK QUALITY
Overall, I felt like this book was very nicely put together. I liked the cover (although it's a little text heavy) and felt as though the interior had some very nice formatting. It was comfortable to hold and the fonts are easy to read. There's nothing super fancy going on here, but the presentation is quite solid and the book itself is well made.

CONCLUSION
Like the people who shared their stories, this book is far from perfect, but in the end I would still recommend it any practicing Catholic who is looking for good meditation material on faith and overcoming sin (I don't really know if there is enough context provided here for this to be as powerful for non-Catholics, even though many of the people the book features weren't necessarily living Catholic lives at the start of their stories).

(+) Six unique accounts of faith and battling with sin
(+) A solidly formatted paperback
(+) Powerful life stories that are worth thinking/meditating on
(+) Testimonials progressively get better and more unguarded (chapters 3, 4, and 6 being particular standouts)
(-) A somewhat off-putting first testimonial to kick things off
(-) Not enough focus on everyday "small miracles" or lay-people
(-) The testimonials don't always live up to the book's promise

One day, I listened to a guy on a YouTube video talk about his life and I was intrigued. He was overwhelmed by life’s challenges, and a little messed up but somehow turned his life around. Then I found this book, Of Men and Mary: How Six Men Won the Greatest Battle of Their Lives and realized that the very guy I watched in the video was one of those six men whose lives were affected and changed by discovering their faith. I guess this book touched me at a deeper level because I wasn’t reading about a faceless, unknown person with only a name. I had heard his voice, saw his facial expressions, and could confer that experience to the words I read. The other five men in the novel became a bit more ‘alive’ to me because I could trust that their stories were real, that they were real. Reading this novel was an enlightening experience, in a good way, because it also encourages hope.

Initially, I expected a dry experience because I was reading about how religion changed these men’s lives. There is nothing dry or boring or uninteresting when you ‘meet’ a man who was a murderer, another who actually died, or a guy who was prone to infidelity and one who lived a lifestyle full of mistakes and kept making them, over and over, and over again. I think his story was the hardest to read and yet the most inspirational because it illustrated what I’ve heard; that God is a loving, forgiving God who only wants the best for us, and to bring us home to him when we die. But, and it’s a big ‘but’, we have to be heading that way in our lives while we are around to use our free will to make the right choices. All six men were not making the right choices and this book is about what happened, what changed them, and what it looks like after they’ve made the changes.

Like I mentioned, there was one man’s story that I found hard to read because he was given so many chances, even some amazing interventions, and he STILL reverted to his old mistakes. I wanted to shake him. How can he experience something that proved that there is a God, that He loved him and answered his prayers, and yet go backwards? His story showed me a few things, namely that God really is a forgiving God, he doesn’t give up on us, even when we purposely or accidentally screw up, we’re given chance after chance to repent and return onto the right path. The act of loving someone is exactly that, an action, a doing. And that loving action is expressed in each of the six men.

The story of the man who would be a famous football player amused me and wowed me at the same time. Boy, did he test God. Every time he said, “If you do this, only then will I do …”, except he kept moving the goalpost – numerous times. I’m thinking, ‘Uh-oh, he’s going to push God too far; that’s really poking the bear!” Except how it all resolved took me by surprise. It was like reading a convoluted mystery book – nothing seems to make sense or go in the direction you think it’s going to go, then, Boom! – the big reveal. I enjoyed his story the most.

Of Men and Mary earns the tag of inspirational. It’s also entertaining, thought-provoking, immensely interesting, and it gives one hope. No matter how bad a person thinks their sins might be, God’s healing love will help overcome and conquer that taint – but it comes with a price. You must love God back. I’m not talking about feeling like you love Him, but actionably demonstrating that love in your life in all aspects. Sounds hard, right? The six guys in this book sure felt that way … until they didn’t. That’s the mind-blowing part. When you’re happy, it’s not so much a hardship anymore, because you’re doing it out of love. And because these stories are about real people who overcame incredible odds, some more dire than others, it inspires me to never give up, and to keep moving forward because the ultimate goal is worth it.

I’m super glad I discovered this book. All because I watched a video. See? You never know where inspiration is going to come from.

My Review and Thoughts:

First, I want to say this book is brilliant. It's a touching, moving ordeal of emotional wonderment that transcends off the page into an emotional reality that the reader can't help but feel a part of the glory of each story.

The passion of Jesus Christ and His wonderful loving Mother, Mary become focal points of perfect clarity in each of these 6 stories of men who found Jesus through the precious and wonderful glory of Mary. These 6 men for all walks of life come full force into glory, passion and healing wonders through Christ Jesus' mother.

Faith is built up perfectly in this book. Love of Christ and Heaven and being saved from destructive behaviors, lifestyles, situations and most of all a life hollow, now found and created in the glory of God. I found each one of these stories truly moving, and heart touching reality. I felt the glory of heaven in these tales. I smiled, I cried, and I was thoroughly filled with the glory of Jesus Christ as each story unfolded in a majestic wonder.

My two personal favorites in the book, first by Father Rick Wendell and the chapter called: The Man that Died before He Lived. This Chapter was an eye-opening experience that left such a beautiful and amazing feeling after reading it. I was moved in the heart, mind and the soul. I was gifted through this experience and I feel that anyone reading it will be to. That is what this whole book does. It gives gifts in each Chapter. Amazing understanding of the glory of Heaven, Jesus and His mother Mary. The next one that truly touched me and brought tears to my eyes was Martial Hell to Marian Bliss by Deacon David Leatherby. This was a up and down battle of finding true faith the glory of God and coming to terms with the walk of faith. A magical and wonderful thought-provoking chapter that will truly bless anyone reading it.

I highly recommend this book to any Christian or non-Christian that want to experience a glory of miracles and the testimonies of average persons that are lost, vacant or in need of being saved from the darkest hours of life.

These testimonies are thoroughly engrossing. My heart felt solid, glorified and most of all, my heart felt the love of Christ in these testimonies.

Would I Return to Again: Absolutely? I feel this is one of those books that I shall return to often just to experience these wonderful men and their testimonies of finding the glory of God. I was so touched. So, embraced by their stories that each one has lingered deep inside my soul, heart and mind and I feel that it will do the same to anyone that reads this book. This book demands to be read many times.

Would I Recommend: In a heartbeat. I recommend this to anyone. Inspire someone. Buy this book and give it as a gift. Show the glory of Jesus Christ through His Mother. Give a gift of touching, magical, inspiring beauty through these highly emotional testimonies.

My Rating: 5 out of 5

Four Final Words: Amazing, brilliantly focused. Inspiring.

Not sure what to think of this book. With regards to the miracles described in the book I don't think I believe any of them - particularly the claim of Rosaries being turned into gold. Needless to say I'm not a believer in this nor did any of the fantastic stories in the book bring me any closer to believing.

Having said that - I enjoyed the book and did find it interesting as well as entertaining. The story in chapter four (After Our Lady's Heart) alone is worth the price of the book.

Of Men and Mary

Excellent source of 6 powerful testimonies from men whose lives were changed from the lies of sin to prayerful holy men, some even becoming priests, some becoming public speakers all in the name of Jesus and His Mother Mary. Easy to read, touched my heart and encouraged my own prayer time.

These are amazing and inspiring stories of how the Blessed Mother can help to bring God’s graces through her intercession. Whether or not you believe in the apparitions, the stories of conversions and miracles that have happened at Medjugorje point to the powerful intercession of the Blessed Mother even to our current times.
