Elements of this book were interesting, but I found others distracting or disturbing.
Interesting: The setup of the book had potential. Starting with the terrifying scene of parents being murdered in front of their children, we then see the assailants--rather than kill the children when they are found hiding in a closet--are instead taken by the thieves because they believe they can mold these children (whose parents were sorcerers) into good thieves. From there, the book details the lives of the children as grownups.
Distracting: As has been mentioned in other reviews, there is a multitude of errors in grammar, punctuation, and usage. The first one is on the very first page when the wrong form of the article is used in “an chilly.” The word loot is used instead of the word loo; clinched is used instead of clenched. instead of a character lowering his head, he “declined” it. “Their life” was used instead of “their lives.” Other sentences or phrases were simply convoluted, like “tightfitting black and tailored white satin covered his body.” (Maybe “tightfitting, tailored black-and-white satin covered his body.”) Commas were too plentiful, too few, or just bizarrely placed. Example: “Everyone was stiff, with fully erect posture, and uniform dancing.” Considering these authors have both been on national bestseller lists (NYT and USA Today), the lack of editing is surprising and appalling.
Disturbing: The cover of the book is a blatant sexual appeal to men. I think it would have been a more interesting cover to have both the siblings equally prominent and more fully dressed. In fact, I almost didn’t choose this book because of the cover.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
What I really liked while reading this book was that almost each chapter was from different point of view and gave different perspective on the events. That let the plot to flow effortlessly. And allow to have visibility on the whole adventure. Additional twists in the story line made it even more interesting. I hope in the next part the mysteries and hidden truths would be slowly unravelled and I could enjoy this story even more. I really connected with two main protagonists but I also enjoyed the other characters who were not always the good ones. What was sometimes distracting was the editing or lack of it. English is not my first language but I can spot words being twisted or used in the wrong way. Also in the epilogue I was confused what was the name of the person and if it was only one or two of them...??? Still not sure on that one. All in all the adventure presented on the pages is a good one and I spent very nice time reading this novel and I hope to read more about these characters.
I'm a fan of K.N. Lee and her stories, this one being no exception. She's given us a brother and sister raised to become thieves by the man who, unknown to them, killed their parents. A YA story for sure, but anyone with an imagination and love of all things magical will easily become enchanted. Spelling and grammatical errors were a prominent and confusing, especially the use of 'loot', both for stolen treasure and the bathroom, but once engrossed in the tale my mind seemed to correct those without too much analytical thought. A great start to what could become a greater series.
I always enjoy the stories that this author weaves. This story is about the trial and tribulations that brother & sister, Brenden and Keira have in a very intricate plot. People aren't what they seem to be and motives are concealed from Brenden and Keira. The one thing for certain is the love between brother and sister. It was so heartwarming to read. As usual there is a real plot twist at the end of this story which leaves you hanging to read the next in the saga. I can't wait to read the next installment. This is a must read author who you won't regret spending you hard earned money on.
I bought the book because I loved the Dragonborn series by KN Lee. It was an interesting read. Not quite what I expected. The authors kept me enthralled with the story from start to finish. The story definitely has some scenes not appropriate for minors. The brother and sister team made amazing main characters. I am looking forward to seeing what happens next with them. Things I didn't like about the story are the cover (the woman's outfit is too revealing) and that it ended too soon. Other than that the authors did an amazing job storytelling.
I actually had a really hard time getting into this book. I liked the concept but it was pretty slow moving and predictable. I don’t know there was just something about it that I couldn’t get into. The characters were okay but again I had a hard time connecting with either of them. The overall concept was good there was just something missing for me. I really wanted to love this but it left me disappointed.
Being a copy editor, I started noticing that the wrong draft of this book was posted. NOTE to Authors: There are significant errors every other page! With that said, this book was still very engaging as are the other amazing works of KN Lee. I have not read Mr. Price’s works yet. I turned the errors into a joke in my brain as it just got quite ridiculous really lol! A great fantasy epic adventure!
The overall theme was disturbing. Throwing the different Guilds at each other to establish supremacy made the story, but made it ugly. Murder seemed to be the common denominator. The main characters being thieves, even if they were very good at it, brought the story down. However you couldn't help but like the brother and sister, while feeling bad for those who died.
The author left a number of grammar and spelling errors which only made it more difficult to navigate.
This is the magical start to a new series. The storyline is well-crafted, fast-pasted with dastardly villains and adventure. The main characters are siblings who are likable, relatable and devoted to the other. There is substance that will pique your interest and hold it. I liked it. I voluntarily read an ARC and this is my honest review.
Great book! Great build up, the setting of the story as well as the vast characters. The plot is so intriguing, you just keep reading to determine what will unfold next. Who is friend, who is foe? Will the hero’s be able to make it? These are some of the questions that are roaming through your head. Mystery, action and fantasy all rolled into one book!
The store and concept was interesting but there were several things that perturbed me. One was how the girl was only 16 and the boy was 13 but the author treated them like they were adults when really they're eere mere kids. The writing style was easy to read and I have a consistent flow to it and I like the different point of views from the different characters.
This is a fast-paced entertaining read, with an intriguing storyline. The characters, who are siblings, are easy to like and complex. There's mystery, twists and turn, that kept me engrossed and flipping the pages. I recommend you read it for yourself.

A fantastic read. That is fast paced and grabs you right from the first page. And has you on the edge until the last page. Brendan and Kiera are on for a big assignment. Theres lots of twists and turns. A fantastic read Shauna Joesten
*** Read in Kindle Unlimited *** A fast paced, well crafted storyline that has adventure surrounding dastardly villains. The worlding building and main characters are siblings that are devoted to each other and their story kept my interest piqued till the last page.
I have read many of the author's books. This one has a lot going on and it can take a little time to get into the story. I liked that it had quite a few surprises and look forward to more adventures with the characters.
This book was not bad. I liked that it was fast-paced more forward the end, but in the first part it was rather slow and I had some problems getting into the story and characters as something was... Well off to me. I hope book 2 will be more of my cup of tea.
Interesting premise but it's so poorly written you would think it was done by a middle schooler. Poor grammar, poor sentence structure and 1 dimensional characters with no development.
An excellent start to a series of sword and sorcery. I can foresee this will be an epic if handled the right way. A captivating installment, I look forward to their further adventures.
